Need expert help with reticle in SFP, for the Nightforce NX8 2.5-20x50mm

This scope is for a 18" gas gun. 223, Hunting varmints in Kentucky

Well, Nightforce does kind of a shitty job with reticles, but MIL-XT would be my choice.

I prefer thicker on low power.

I would look into NX6 2-12…

what Retical in the NX6

I forgot to add I wanted SFP, everyone complains about the reticle being so small on the FFP.

why the NX 6 ?

SFP in a 2-20 makes no sense at all.

Mil xt is very good.

Tremor is only for advanced shooters and gets "busy"

2-12 nx6 is a big difference from 2-20.

Id put the steiner h6xi 2-12 over the nx6 2-12 personally

The nx8 2-20 has a 30mm tube and thats a deal breaker for many shooters

Explore the 3-18 range also

Whats it going on?

Also just saw your post. Sfp is a non starter. No debate on that.

MIL-XT is the only way to fly. I can do Tremor, I’ve done tremor, I have tremor, but if you’re asking this question you don’t need to mess with Tremor. Hell, I don’t need to mess with tremor. Get XT and be done with it.

I have and enjoy a few H6Xis including the 2-12 and 3-18. I’m curious how the NF compares. The Steiners are definitely no slouch, and they’re hundreds cheaper to boot. I’m not convinced I’d be getting an upgrade if I ‘upgraded’ but obviously I’m talking out of my ass. I think the NX6 line definitely has potential and it’s always nice to see a quality new 2-N optic.

SFP, is that bad?

you can see the reticle in SFP. With the FFP, you can only use the reticle from like 8 power to 20.

But you’ll only have accurate holds at 20x.

The downside is it’s also nigh useless as anything but a crosshair outside the magnification that corresponds to the correct measurements.

There are places a SFP is not only reasonable, but strongly preferable. The NX8 2.5-20 is absolutely not one of them and it’s completely misaligned with the characteristics of the optic.

FFP vs. SFP isn’t one size fits all. I prefer LPVO’s in SFP, same for 2-10/even 2-12 depending on use. Reason being if you pretty much are only shooting ant low end and top end, might as well reap benefits of SFP.

If shooting throughout full mag range, ESPECIALLY if you shoot holdovers, FFP makes most sense.

To question asked, the mag range comes with trade offs. Basically…bigger magnification range = smaller field of view and tighter eyebox. Let the distance you’re actually (read realistically) shooting dictate your magnification range. A 5-6x ERECTOR will yield a more forgiving scope with wider view.

Here in Kentucky a 500 yard shot is hard to come by. Mostly 50 to 400 yards.  My rifle is Larue Gas Gun 18" 6.5 Grendel. My second rifle is a Gas Gun 18" 223. Shooting Varmints in Kentucky what scope would you choose for both rifles?

Price is pretty important. Distance is only part of the equation, target size is the other. Dunno what a varmint is in KY.

FWIW I gear my Grendels mostly for deer hunting, hence leaning more towards things like Leupolds and Trijicon Credos and so many simpler reticles and a lot of SFP, and sort them by barrel length relative to range.

In Grendel’s I’ve got:

12.5” Proof:
3.6-18 Mk5

13.9 Craddock ultralight:
3-9 Leupold VXR Patrol

16” Lilja:
2.5-10 Mk4HD

18” JP:
2.5-10 Credo

18” JP:
4-16 Credo

18” Noveske:
2.5-15 Credo

20” Proof Carbon Fiber:
4.5-22 Razor LHT

20” Proof SS:
4.5-29 Cronus

Not everyone…only the folks that don’t shoot long, don’t really think through what the are doing, get confused by the reticle, etc.

In an SFP, it is all about center reticle focus….maybe you can run a 1-6x or similar lpvo as a min/max only tool, but this is all pretty limiting for what purpose? To see the center better. On max, you can use the reticle, but that is kind of it.

With an FFP, you can still see a very defined aim point on min magnification. Try it, don’t trust me. At max you have a very usable grid. I find at 2-300 yards, I can run 6-9x and see the grid well enough to hold and be zoomed out enough to see where the deer went. On targets, I zoom in more.

In posts or books, I can see the weakness of ffp. In the field, it is a non-issue. In study, the zoom math seems feasible for SFP, but in the field, it was either turn it up or poke and hope. Shooting a deer at 360 on 16x was my breaking point. Took me an hour to find it. It was drt.

Exactly why I don't feel a burning desire to update from an NXS 2.5-10x42mm to the NX6 2-12x42mm besides getting a mil tree instead of a mill crosshair. I'd be adding ¼ lb and a half inch to my mini-spr setup.
