I put a 'War Hog' (not wart hog) compact brake on my 10.5" AR pistol and shot it a few times. The first time, I had left my sandbags home and had the gun propped on my range bag. The side blast literally blew a big hole in the bag and cleared the table of my glasses, the turret covers off the red-dot, binocular lens covers, etc. :) It really worked, but the price was a little too high. I already had a 'linear comp' that was only a little longer than the 'War Hog' so I switched it on. It seems to work fine and there's no side blast. Today at the range, that turned out to be a great move - usually I'm the only one there on the 50 yd range on a weekday morning, but today there was only one bench left on the right end. The guy on my left was probably as old as me but more 'Fudd-like'. They were all shooting lever action or bolt action - I was the only one shooting an AR. So, I got down to business, and they all turned out to be decent guys. I was really glad I had the linear comp. It puts out a fireball but all gas goes forward, none to the side.
I also completed changing the zero on it from 25 yds to 50 - I've always liked that trajectory. I had to create a different kind of target so I could tell if I was centered - what I came up with is a 12" black circle with a 3" or 4" white center. This worked right away and I was shooting small enough groups to make sight adjustments meaningful. For my record target, I shot a 1" 3-shot group but needed to move it a little down and left. The next group was two shots touching, then a 2" flyer. This was more centered so I accepted it and put the pistol into service with a 50 yard zero.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of muzzle breaks, way too loud! Much prefer suppressors on my shorties.

Why put a BRAKE on a 5.56?  There's no kick.

Brakes are just F'n loud.  A2's for all the things unsuppressed

A brake and a Limbsaver pad and the rifle doesn't move. Makes spotting hits a cinch. Also, brakes aren't a problem for the shooter.

But yes, I do like a can on the end.

If you ever take a gun class avoid training next to someone with a muzzle brake.
It makes for a miserable day.

For a 10.5" AR

Not sure that's much of a "thing" with a shortie, a brake that close to your head may have a little different affect on the shooter than a brake another 10" further away.

I don't even have a brake on my 450 BM, and that actually kicks a little.

The linear brake is different. The gun will be just as loud as it would with the A2 but all blast is directed forward. Its just a simple internal baffle with exhaust ports around the muzzle opening.

The WarHog brake’s advantages are its very short length and its very low cost.  I can only imagine the blinding flash produced from a 10.5” barrel in low light!   It’s not the most effective at reducing recoil but it reportedly works well.

It was a wise choice for the OP to switch to a linear comp at the range.  The best of those I’ve used are from Kaw Valley, well designed and made from premium materials.  There is a measurable reduction in sound at the shooter’s ear.

I just wanted a different look on the muzzle and a way to direct the exhaust forward - hence the linear comp.

A linear comp makes more sense than a brake on a shortie, but I had one on my 10.5" for a bit and it didn't do a whole lot for me.  I went back to a flash hider.

As long as you like it, that is all that really matters.

Well, I just didn't like the linear comp - the thing is very heavy. I'm enjoying some VG6 Gamma brakes on another pistol upper and a 16" carbine, both in 7.62x39, so I'm putting one on the 5.56 upper. I use the short version on pistols, and while they obviously will blow exhaust to the sides, the port area is huge compared to the Warhog, so velocity of the gases is lower. I guess my guns are just going to be loud. Forgot to mention, especially on the 7.62x39 pistol, the Gamma brake makes a big difference in recoil.

It’s not about the kick IMO it’s about keeping the muzzle flat for fast splits. I can approach accurate .11-.12 splits with a properly tuned gun with a brake and fast trigger.

What linear comp do you have that's heavy?

I've put linear comps on all our ARs since a flash hider in CA isn't approved. Mostly use BRT comps that are very lightweight.

For recoil reduction use an A5 buffer tube, Tubbs spring and Kynshot RB5007 buffer. Reduces felt recoil and easier to keep the target visible in the scope between shots.

I guess that works, but compared to the cost of a brake…….  😬

I didn't think a brake did much... at least the ones I tried. Paid about $50-60 at the time so maybe I didn't spend enough to get a good one. Got the type that had an outer shield that could be screwed on to keep the blast off the neighbor.

The Kynshot buffer was $100, Tubbs spring $20, A5 tube $45... of course things have gone up now.

What's an effective brake go for these days?

I have a KVP linear comp on my 8 1/2" .300 BO pistol and like it, essentially a single baffle suppressor if you think about it.
And you do want an alignment rod to check.
Nobody will be coming to save you, plan accordingly.

I wound up with V6G Gamma brakes on both pistol uppers. They really work, and they're not as disturbing to the sides because the gas has much larger ports than the 'Warhog', hence lower velocity. Its a gun range - its going to be loud. That's why I use foam ear plugs plus electronic muffs. Case in point, I was by myself on the 50 yard range this morning with the 5.56 pistol. Damn if a guy didn't come in and set up at the bench right next to me. This range has 10 stations and I was all the way to the right. He then proceeded to shoot 12 gauge slugs and the hulls were all over me. Hey, I didn't mind, even though I was at the closing point of my session and trying to be as accurate as possible - I just kept shooting and put the distractions out of my mind. You have to be able to do this if you ever have to be effective with your shooting for real.

Well, you can get by without the rod. Install the muzzle attachment and sight down the bore from the chamber toward a light source. Assuming you don't see any part of the attachment, now move the barrel around so you are looking all around the muzzle at the greatest angle you can get. For the average length brake, you won't see anything of it - if you get an edge into the muzzle picture at only one spot, its on crooked and is a faulty part. Longer attachments will be seen, so you have to line everything up to see if the attachment muzzle is in line with the bore. If you think it might be crooked or you can't tell, then you either have to find an 'alignment rod' or get help from a gunsmith.

The only muzzle breaks I put on guns is to attach a suppressor easier
