Are any of you guys running A1 uppers with F-marked front sight bases? I know it's not technically "correct," but it's also not as bad as running a flat-top with an A2 FSB.
With an A1 and F-FSB, you just lower your front sight post a little, yes? So for those who do it, is the sight picture annoying as hell, or is it not very noticeable when zeroed? |

I recently put together an A1 Mid-Length inspired by this thread. In fact, it's identical to the rifle posted by noob5000000 on page 1. The upper is an A1C7-type from the EE, with a Del-Ton lightweight 1/9 chrome lined 16" barrel (F-marked FSB), and RRA tapered handguards, on a PSA blem lower with PSA LPK and Fulton Armory A1 stock kit. Shot it for the first time today, and despite bottoming the front sight post all the way into the drum, couldn't get the bullet impact closer than 6" low at 25yds. So, short of replacing the FSB, I guess I'll file the sight post down a little, or try to find a shorter post. Good thing is that it seems to be reasonably accurate, and responded well to sight adjustment until I ran out of downward travel on the post. All that said to say that mine is apparently one that won't zero by just dropping the post a couple of rotations. I really like how the rifle handles, much more so than my old SP-1 or the M16A1 that I was issued many years ago. SS |

I really like this thread! Now I don't feel so left out when I keep my modern A1 middy simple.
I was talking to my son, who has a AR piston system, and a single-point sling, etc, and said "Why not keep it the way it is? I'm retired, the chances of me having to do a building search again, are pretty slim. And if I had to, I can still use my A1 irons, like I did with my LEO carbine in the old days." |
DPMS receivers, AIM Stainless LPK, BCM BCG, stock from Essential arms barrel from EBR Barrels, 14.5 w/pinned extended flash hider, 1/7 Chrome lined mil spec alloy. Wish I had built it with a light weight barrel.

Here's my contribution. It was really cutting-edge--almost 20 years ago when I put it together.
It's an SP1 with an SSK carry-handle conversion, UltraDot sight, and a Colt M4 front end. I got a lot of ribbing from the guys about the RDS until they tried it. This was way before red dots became de rigueur. Other equipment includes a Duckbill PG, Vortex FH, GG&G Sling Thing, and a GG&G rail under the M4 handguards. The mag is a Sterling 40. 
And a close-up of the conversion. SSK did it specifically with this sight in mind.

I'm using the boonie packer better mag adapter to make them fit properly. It also reliably activates the stock bolt catch on the last round. Lower is all PSA. |

Did you have any problems zeroing if using a barrel with an F height FSB? I am currently building an A1 mid-length and this is my first venture into middy’s. I’d rather not have to bury my front sight into the FSB to get a zero if I can avoid it. If a standard height FSB works better with this combination I’ll go that route. Experiences good or bad are welcome, Wpns Man |

Experiences good or bad are welcome, Wpns Man Fwiw, ran 1 middy(Del-ton LW 16") with a flat top with no issues. Tthe above A1 and SP1 uppers both have F marked 14.5 and 16" barrels with no issues. Yes the post ran down somewhat, but theres still some adjustment left on both. |
