If all I will be doing is taking off and putting on a couple of flash suppressors, will this be the way to go? Or is there a better thing to use? Something like a Midwest Industries A
Upper Receiver Action Rod?

I have both and vastly prefer the MI rod.

+1 for the MI rod.

@Auraka

Would you mind expanding a bit as to why why you prefer it that much more? I imagine that it is due to a tighter lock-up?

Clamping the barrel is the safest method, especially when dealing with over torqued muzzle devices.

I also have

Fits better than the bev block and supports the reciever better without having to use a bolt carrier and flimsy pin.

Mounts better in the vise too and won’t flex like a bev block

In addition to a tighter fit overall, it engages the barrel extension more completely, with less slop and potential for the barrel or entire upper to move/rotate under torque.

This, do not use a rod to remove a muzzle device.

Nobody wants to remove their handguard to install a muzzle device

Regardless, it is the best practice.

Many an extension has been spun removing stubborn MDs using action rods.

I can attest to this, the a hole that built one of my uppers used red loc-tite on the flash hider! Prick!😡 used grease on the barrel extension, guess which one came off first?  I tried clamping the barrel (in my case) but couldn’t get a tight enough grip on it, kept turning as i was trying to get the FH off.

Assuming you already have a vise, I'd recommend barrel blocks.

What specific barrel blocks you guys talkimg about? Seems like the barrel slipping is always an issue.

As for the guys saying no-go on the reactiom rods, does’t the fin on the URR mitigate the barrel extension concern?

With an action rod such as the MI-URR, the "fin" will engage the receiver and the splines the locking lug recesses in the extension, but with enough ass behind a wrench the barrel can spin in the extension. Especially with a stubborn removal.

Understood. And as for the barrel blocks, is there a specfic set you use? All I found was this in a quick search:

I was lucky, a friend of mine ponied up for a VIPER, so I just use his when needed anymore.

I've made/used several homebrew types over time. Wrapping the barrel in newspaper,  leather, and using rosin help mitigate slippage.

Oak blocks and rosin in conjunction with a quality vise always got the job done for me in the past.

I've only used the MI rod for removing and replacing muzzle devices, but I've also only switched out muzzle devices that I installed myself in the first place, and I didn't use rockset or heavy loctite.

My personal experience is that properly torqued muzzle devices don't come off, so no need to use a heavy adhesive that will make it difficult to get it off in the future if you decide to go with something else.

if it's a 16" bbl and carbine gas with a delta ring style drop in handguard you don't need to, there's enough barrel exposed to clamp it.

if you use anything that engages the barrel extension, you're assuming that the extension/barrel/upper receiver/barrel nut isn't going to move or have issues as you crank on the muzzle device.  bad assumption.

figure out how to clamp the barrel in a vise for muzzle device work.
The deuce you say.

sacrificial chunks of 1/2" or 3/4" plywood, also tried solid red oak with good results.

if it moves, crank it down harder.  there's no way you're hurting the barrel.
The deuce you say.

I use these to clamp the barrel for MD work.

You can also try the DIY wood method.

Everybody that spins a barrel extension by using the wrong tool will get to remove the handguards, as well as everything else, to fix what could have been prevented.
Chances are, there’s enough barrel ahead of the OP’s FSB/GB to not necessitate handguard and gas tube removal.

I've used a bev block to take a md off. Also used a heat gun on the md to loosen any loc-tite up also.
