Looking to either build or buy an AR10. I've built a ton of AR15's in the last 20 years, but somehow have managed to avoid building a single AR10. Anyways, looking for one in 308, I want something compact to keep the weight down and make it easier to carry around with a can. Something handy enough I can run drills or shoot 3 gun with, but still be able to still ring a 12 in. plate at 600 yards with little effort. So would a 14.5 be alright? I've heard maybe even a 12.5 could do that? I plan on putting a resonator on it which is about 7 inches long. As far as building or buying, I honestly would be fine just buying a factory rifle. But I don't think LMT has what I want. It's either get a 16, or get the 13.7 and send the barrel to get the pinned muzzle device removed right away. It would be nice if they sold a pistol version I could SBR down the road. If i was in the market for a 16 I'd probably get the LMT defender. Looking for suggestions on barrel length, and then options for complete rifles/pistols, and then also build options with what barrel/reciever set combo/What BCG and Buffer setup/ etc. |
I'm not lazy, I just really enjoy doing nothing.

Build an LMT. Lower+upper+13.5” bbl. Plus you save the 11% excise tax and avoid the DPMSArmalite BS. |
I wanted a mission, and for my sins, they gave me one.

When I started pricing out an 18” barrel build it got expensive real fast. If I do eventually go 6.5 it will probably be a factory rifle. I already have an Armalite AR10 carbine that I replaced the barrel with an 18” stainless barrel. |

| I would recommend a Ballestic Advantage build, either a complete rifle or a upper. I have two of their barrels, the have a .75 moa guarantee at 100 yrds, 5 rounds match ammo and the barrels I have will do that. Great product, the often have sales, the accuracy guarantee is somewhat unusual I think. |
Out of every 100 men, ten shouldn't even be there, eighty are just targets. Nine are the real fighters and we are lucky to have them for they make the battle. Ah, but the one...one is a Warrior, and he will bring all the others back.

As an owner of Armatlite AR10B ( now obsolete ) , FN SCAR ( soon to be obsolete ) and the LMT MWS. when you go 308 AR style rifle, buy the closest thing to a standard that exists. Seems to me that right now that LMT is closest ( being they have the most current military contracts for 308 AR style rifles ). I would do the LMT MWS 308 battle rifle. it should have wings for quite some time ( fingers crossed ) |

I only have an LMT MRP 5.56 rifle, but I recently put a few rounds through an LMT MWS Defender that its owner slapped the Estonian Defense Forces piston barrel and BCG into it. Seemed only a bit heavier than the LW barrel he had in it before. The owner had a small case that held bbl, bcg, irons and scope sighted in for the piston barrel conversion. I do think the LMT has the most versatility. It has been around for a while. I asked why he didn't just buy another MWS upper and kit it up. He said that if he got one he knew that he would buy a complete MARS-H lower and have another rifle. |

I think I'm leaning towards LMT. I can buy a 13.7 barrel unpinned, upper and lower seperate. Will a 13.7 have enough ass behind it to hold 2 moa at 600 yards? I'm not well versed with 308 ballistics in short barrels. Likely use FGMM if it likes it. |

Unless it’s going transonic (not sure what muzzle velocity would be in that bbl length) then velocity wouldn’t affect accuracy at that distance other than the fact that it is in the wind longer. I’ve shot a Bear Creek AR-10 onto a C zone torso at 600yds without issue. |

Light makes me think SFAR but I don't know if anyone has chopped one down under 16". Originally Posted By FoxValleyTacDriver: I think I'm leaning towards LMT. Likely use FGMM if it likes it. I don't think the amount of ass is going to make that big of a difference. With a good barrel and load I don't think that's an unreasonable standard so if you are up to the task I'm sure it will perform. 13.7 is pretty close to 16" and 14.5" and people regularly shoot out to 600 with those barrel lengths in 308 and 223. Obviously not ideal. |

He only goes down to 16.5, but it kinda gives you an idea of velocity loss per length. https://rifleshooter.com/2014/12/308-winchester-7-62x51mm-nato-barrel-length-versus-velocity-28-to-16-5/ |

No reason to lug around all that weigtht if you don't have to. I've shot a POF Revolution 16" in a 3 gun match (demo/stage gun) and besides the big empties and heavier recoil, it felt like my 223 AR weight/handling wise. |

How's the accuracy on the pof rogue and revolution? I've heard mixed opinions on those guns. |

Want an AR that punches through it like my 6.5 bolt does. Good to know on the lengths then. |

by the time your done with a shorter set up you will still be in the 10 + lbs. range, I would suggest you go with a 16 inch LR308 setup you will be in the 12 lbs. range and barrels and parts should be easy to get and switch out, as you want and needs change. |

OP is looking for a 308 that can hit a 12" plate at 600 yds, that's roughly a 2 moa target so to be honest, I wouldn't count on a production 308 gas gun barrel to hold that unless it is matched to a cartridge or handload. Both of my production barreled 16" and 18" AR 308 made hits at 600 yds 9 out of 10 shots using FGM 168 but they were on an iron harry (steel IPSC target ~30"x18"), Burris XTR 1-8x. Regarding chopping the barrel down, I would just buy what you want at the start and not monkey with it afterwards. |

Drawback is as of right now, if I choose to go with Ruger I don't know what stocking up on parts looks like. For now, I'll keep both and see what transpires. |

That’s the 10,000 lb gorilla that has me keeping my other AR10’s. Wish Ruger would get off their high horse and sell parts. |
| HK MR762 mags are proprietary but plentiful and have come down in price substantially, in addition to being very tough and durable, i have two 10 rounders I have used for range and NRA tactical type matches (2K+ rounds) that have been used for four + years they hardly show wear. The old mag availability issues/high price story is now a thing of the past, check gunbroker. |

Another plus for the MR is that parts are available from numerous sources, including HK, and I don't worry about getting parts that might not fit. Like most AR-style rifles, some parts cross from 5.56 to 7.62x51 versions. |

I'll be honest with you and I'm sure there are plenty of big brand people that will down talk it,but I bought a factory new DPMS LR308(AR10) about 10 years ago for around $880+ tax etc and it has served me excellently. Not to mention almost all the aftermarket products are geared for the DPMS LR308 and it's replicators, not Armalites AR10. I got the 16" barreled carbine, and it was a 338 Federal for a while and is now back to .308. I've never had a problem firing, feeding, ejecting,or hitting the target. It's accurate, and functions with any kind of ammo I can put through it. Not everybody can afford a Noveske etc,and personally I dont covet those $8000 AR15s and AR308s because you can only hit a target so accurately, and the DPMS will hit right where I aim it. If I was you and going for 600 yards,I'd stick with the 16" barrel. But if you're good like that, this gun will shoot as far as you can see. Just my opinion. |
