Helo and thanks in advance for any advice So I've had a 512 eotech for a long time, i love it, but never planned on pairing it with a magnifier, mostly because it seems bulky and everything i read says their heavy. But after removing (off a different rifle) my Primary Arms 1-6x24 for the first time in a long time I realized how heavy that was. So after some intense math, I realized my scope and mount is actually heavier than an eotch+magnifier combo would be, batteries and all. (obviously granted less magnification) Primary arms 1-6x24 and vortex cantilever mount- 24.6oz Eotech 512 and g33 magnifier with batteries- 22.1oz Eotech 512 + g45- 24.3oz So i understand (and agree) with other complaints about magnifier combos but why "overweight"? Is it just because it's a 1x optic being adapted to use magnification, where as a LPVO is more of a magnified optic that can also go to 1x.... if that makes sense Like I said at the beginning I've always loved this old school eotech but it would be nice to get some zoom behind it, and on my LPVO i only ever use 1x or 6x, so is the flip to the side really that cumbersome, more so than say a light mounted to the side of a rail? Little off topic but having never held a real g33 in hand idk So i guess I'm reconsidering my dislike of magnifier combos... again having never held a real magnifier in hand :P Just thought it was interesting it would be lighter, love to hear what u guys think -Nicko |

I think the bigger problems with magnifiers involve it being an overall clunkier solution to having both a magnified/1X solution vs an LPVO, as well as it being a significantly impaired magnified solution. If you’re planning from the outset to use this with a magnifier, it usually makes more sense to use a 1-6. If conversely you want a 1X, but occasionally want to pop on a magnifier, it makes a lot more sense |
| I think possibly the more important thing is balance and the spread of the weight. An LPVO spreads its 24oz for mount +1-6x weight across the upper receiver a tad bit more because of length like its more at the end of the upper receiver and oftentimes at the beginning of the handguard. The Eotech and magnifier are one in front of an another often with little room, on top of the upper receiver. |
What it boils down to is that they fear an effective resistance to their power: So, Left in power=Guns bad, mmmmkay...?, Right in power=Guns good!-thskirk
An Aimpoint T-2 is even lighter  What’s your question? Get a postal scale and go wild weighing all your kit. Not all LPVOs and mounts weigh the same, some pretty nice very light options out there. You can get an immensely better/useable magnification range with a good LPVO for the same weight. Magnifiers you can pop off too if you don’t want. |

Don't forget the magnifier mount and/or eotech riser. The Eotech is already heavy for what it is compared to a normal red dot. By the time you add a magnifier, you are at a similar weight to LPVO for a vastly inferior magnified solution. I think the complaints about weight are taking that into consideration and are implicitly about added weight vs. the capability you are getting back for that weight. As mentioned, you can take the magnifier off. To me it is for a pretty narrow use case where you want 1x 99.9% of the time and may want some magnification available on the gun for target ID, etc, but the ones I've looked through have all had horrific eye relief/field of view/image quality/reticle compared to any decent LPVO, which is why I've never bought into one. Ymmv. |

It's all personal preference. LPVO vs Eotech combo has been debated ad nauseam. The weight difference is negligible, but can expand depending on which LPVO/ mount. Personally, I prefer the Eotech combo for my go to rifle as it's built for 100 yards or less most of the time, and I can remove the 5x to save the weight. Or I can keep the 5x on it and easily stretch to 300. IMO, LPVO's should be for rifles that do most of their work beyond 100. |

An Eotech actually hugs the rife nicely, keeping the center of gravity tight. Especially on a 1.4” height model. LPVOs are not a problem, however they very much bring the CG forward and UP; more of a “clunky” feeling. Eotech+Mag should be pretty slick. |

I like both options, biggest point for me along with distance is if it is something that may get used when it’s dark/dusk. You need really, really good glass to be able to see through it when it starts getting dark. Red dots work better for me here than my scope at 1x. A red dot with magnifier is more flexible for me when night use, night vision etc comes into play. In the daylight though a good scope is almost always better as far as accuracy goes. Try both and pick what you like better. |
