About 10 years ago there were 5-8 systems out there, but with Adams Arms folding (I know they will likely come back at some point, but at least for now) is Superlative Arms the last drop in gas piston system on the market? Sven Manticore Arms |

That's not normally too much of an issue, but for some reason the gas port location on pistol length gas systems isn't as consistent. When I talked with Superlative about converting my .300 to piston, they strongly recommended against it unless I could confirm that the gas port was exactly where they needed it. And, it wasn't. IT's a Faxon Match barrel and the gas port is JUST out of spec for Superlative. That's a bummer. The Adams Arms pistol system works fine on the .300BLK, fyi. But we all know where they're at now. |

An easy solution for that would just have an oversize starter hole or slot on the underside of their gas block which would allow for gas flow from an inconsistent gas port location into the actual gas port hole in their gas block. But you still had to have the extra space at the top of the rail for it to work, which not all forends have. I've got a .300BLK pistol that was AA piston until I swapped to a 10.5" barrel and went with a new carbon fiber forend that doesn't have the added space at the top for the top rail. That meant having to convert it to DI to use it. I'm torn between leaving the carbon fiber or just getting a forend with that top rail space.... |

I've also not actually had a single malfunction, failure, or part breakage with it yet. It's good enough that I bought spare parts to put in storage for down the road. The only other comment I'd add to the list is quality. The parts are incredibly well made and the machining / finishing is top notch. |

Did you have a chance to talk to Franklin at SHOT? In a video I saw they mentioned a revised the Osprey system and had uppers on display fitted with them. I hope they bring them back to the market along with spare parts for the original units. I've been running a OPS-416 kit since 2013 on a FA receiver and love it. |

I did talk to them and Franklin is bringing back the piston system in a line of guns, but at this time they are not offering it as a separate item (my understanding is they now are pinning the gas block so they want it to be on their barrels that are cut for the pin). Someone else also told me the new piston systems have some changes to parts, such as the piston no longer being "kidney" shaped, but I did not get that info directly from Franklin, but rather someone who was connected with them by business they had done together, so I cannot confirm or deny that. If you buy a forend, it does not come with the barrel nut or the screws. You have to buy the barrel nut separate and the screws separate. I just received a 10" foreend from them. I have all the other parts luckily, but if I didn't I'd have to order again and they charged $70 to ship to Alaska. SO... Be warned. I'm not blaming Pro-Fab, they are still figuring things out. Just letting people know. ETA: I've been talking with one of the guys at Pro-Fab over email about parts and shipping costs. They are obviously just getting their bearings on all of this so be patient with them. But he's working with me on shipping. So they are trying to do right. |

Interested in the SA piston kit. I can not find instructions on their site, or find the answer anywhere. Does the front of the gas block come off to allow the piston to be removed from the front for cleaning? I am hoping so, as if the whole gas block has to be removed to remove/clean the piston, then it is a no go for me. |

I'm going to put this one on my 5.56 'SPR'. If I like it enough, another will be going on a mid-length I have. Tired of DI ARs being dirty as shit shooting suppressed. |

This is how I did mine. BA 7.2" 1:7 barrel. AE extender so I could get enough length to get to the gas adjustment screws with the tool. A collar wouldn't have worked as it would have been too close to the gas block to get the adjustment tool in there. Attached File Attached File I love the over all length but in retrospect I think I'm going to send it out and have a longer barrel just cut down to about 8.75" so I have full rifling all the way to the brake. The extender on such a short barrel worries me if I get a can for it which I want to do. Attached File It all fits fine under this rail. |

I'm pretty certain (hard to see in the rail) that one of the clamping screws is contacting the inside of the rail, but I'll worry about that after function testing. Install was a breeze, and the instructions are very thorough. Mark from Superlative was really helpful with some tips. |

I put twenty rounds through my Superlative kit. 5.56 with a Thunder Beast suppressor. Set the gas block at "4" per the manual and didn't feel a need to change anything. Fired cases looked fine and there was way less fouling in the action. Accuracy seemed unchanged, but I'm going to take the handguard off and file down one of the screw heads a tad just to make sure there's clearance. Recoil was super soft and spotting hits was no problem. Very happy with the kit and installation guide, as well a Superlative's CS. |

Just checking on the AA thread and see ProFab aquired them. Since I had been thinking about spares I checked them out; hopefully they update their website to be better organized but here's what you get looking for AA parts: https://alexprofab.com/?s=Adams+Arms&post_type=product You can buy parts a al carte but they do have a .300 specific kit but the low profile gas block kits are more expensive than the original style kits. https://alexprofab.com/product/adams-arms-piston-kit-adjustable-micro-block-pistol-300-blk/ Zero experience with them, just what I saw looking at them just now. I do like the lower profile gas block if it allows you to use a smaller diameter handguard, the original gas block with the rail on top is clunky and the handguard is larger diameter than most these days. I almost never shoot mine so not sure I want to put any more money into it though, they're $135 for just the block. I had thought a piston kit might be worth trying on an AR-RPK style upper though since that concept is currently popular. |

Will be curious to see how it goes after some more rounds. I am about to pull the trigger on one for me. Edit: just ordered one. I went to SA's website and they were showing a St Patrick's day sale, but then showed out of stock on both the clamp on and set screw .750 mid kits. I found them showing in stock at optics planet. While they do not have the bolt to go with it (I will get it somewhere else) they also had a sale with the code patty. It knocked $36 off. Free shipping, so after sales tax total came to $242. |

However they were left handed or carbine versions. I need right hand mid length. So I hit reject and the estimated shipping date is the 30th. So we will see if/when it gets here. I am in no rush, so waiting a little time is no big deal. |

The spring keeps the bolt in the fully forward position during cycling when gas rings are removed. If the bolt is allowed to move freely, it can bounce back & forth inside the carrier, and rotate out of position, witch can lead to the bolt hitting the barrel, with the locking lugs out of time. The above post by lew leaving the gas rings on the bolt makes better sense than the spring, that people with the Adams kits are always looking for, even though McMaster-Carr has a decent match for pennies on the dollar of what the Adams springs go for. |

I thought rotation was limited by the cam pin and the inside of the upper receiver. I can see a little movement. But when the carrier is driven back by cycling, it will move one way a little, but then when cycling back forward, the pressure of the recoil spring pushing on the carrier, then pushing on the bolt chambering a round, will overcome any gas ring or spring behind the bolt. The cam pin is limited how much it can move by the upper receiver track. Is there something else at play here I am not thinking of? I am not saying it is not happening, I am just not understanding how. |

Where would one find the correct spring to order from them? |

The cam pin is limited how much it can move by the upper receiver track. Is there something else at play here I am not thinking of? I am not saying it is not happening, I am just not understanding how. That is correct. The cam pin- and thus the bolt- is only going to be able to rotate once it reaches the cutout on the left side of the upper. I only left the rings on because I was too lazy to take them off. They do add some resistance to movement, but it's not much nor is it necessary. |
