Listing: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/937878941 So just to get this out of the way first...woof, $2k + taxes/fees for a 601 stock.  Looks brand spanking new though, so it's definitely got that going for it. I am not the seller or buyer on this listing by, just a curious side-liner.Moving on. Something I noticed in the listing that seemed odd, it doesn't appear that it was drilled for a sling swivel in the back. No cross drilled hole for the retaining roll pin, and as best I can see in the photos, no hole on the bottom edge for the sling swivel boss. Has anyone seen this before? Curious what the story is on that if anyone knows.     |

The only part of me that thinks maybe not a first production after the prototypes stock is that, weren't the VERY FIRST 601's given unpainted bakelite furniture with sling swivels? Rotating sling swivels even. My understanding is that the green paint came second after just raw bakelite, though I could certainly be wrong. |

To my knowledge, SN 112 (below) is the only rifle that has a swivel on the pistol grip other than the prototypes. And even then, it has the swivel in the stock, and I’m not sure if the grip wasn’t replaced with one from the prototype run. Attached File Attached File |

(...assuming everything else about it is on the up and up) However that would be assuming that the manufacturing process went in the order of paint, then drill, then assemble. For all I know it could've also been drill the holes first, then paint, then assemble, in which case it makes less sense why there's no holes. Side note, for the Type A stocks, is the tell that the bottom line of the stock extends horizontally before sloping down near the front? I couldn't really tell from the parts ID guide pinned in this section, it was never really clear what I'm looking for. Also, is it known around what S/N range they switched to Type B stocks? |

Theres an updated variation guide that i made to get rid of the photobucket watermarks and make a couple changes/additions. The transition from A to B was around SN 8000 a according to Ekie. Whats weird to me though is the fact that we see virtually zero of these stocks on 601s. I have a massive collection of 601 photos I need to post and all of the early ones do have the swivel. Rare piece indeed, and I stand corrected. |
