Well, I’m picking at the recently delivered JAKL upper in 10.5 556.  Quick notes: Seems well made. Their cerakote team is on point. Definitely an AK/AR hybrid. Recoil spring is hilarious. Very few tool marks. I’ll scope the barrel tomorrow. Going to accuracy test this rig at the range when all the parts get in. Have a 3-18 scope to do the testing with. No suppressor to be fitted. Upper alone weighs 4 lbs 10oz. not bad when you consider it doesn’t need a buffer and spring. Seems solid AF. I might have chosen to do more cosmetic relief cuts like are on the left side. Some on the handguard and some on the right side. Maybe even cut a pattern onto the bolt carrier face in the ejection port. Would have loved an AR barrel compatible trunnion setup, but I understand their choice. Wonder what accuracy will be like, being an AK platform gun. |

I had the same thought cross my mind when wondering if the MKE 33K-types would have serrated forward assist carriers. Missed opportunity... I also think that a dust cover would be a big time advantage. Everyone knows that guntubers will soon each drop their own version of MCX vs. JAKL vs. Dissent... in the context of short stroke vs. long stroke vs. DGI. There will be sand and dust tests as well as mud, and the MCX is going to win those tests because it features a dust cover. Probably guntubers will declare "you get what you pay for" or "short stroke is king" or something like that in the aftermath, but the reason will be a simple dust cover. |

True - a dust cover wouldn't have been the worst idea. That said - I can see how the JAKL was manufactured pretty quickly and adding something like that might very well be quite difficult. This gun is made from an extrusion, which is good tactics for low material waste and making some fairly complex shapes cheaply. The JAKL upper receiver pre-finish machining probably cost around $15, and it probably didn't require any broaching. That has consequences though for changing the outline shape and can grow machine time dramatically for one simple bump on the side.
