I have a new build. 24 stainless bull 5r with a rifle length gas system. I am having fail to feed problems as the round would get jammed into the ramp. Bent the brass up pretty bad below the neck. Had a buddy there with a different lower, plain jane no frills. The upper worked fine with this lower. Wasn’t having gas issues so i’m leaning toward spring/buffer weight. Is there a specific weight buffer for the longer barrel/gas system that I should be considering? Thanks in advance. |

You would have to know what spring you have already to know what spring you would need. The reason I got to try his lower is that his handguard started to rotate and we realized his barrel nut was loose. He just got that one from one of his coworkers today. We weren’t about to use that upper for anything until he gets it fixed. But that was a great suggestion. |

Hate to say it, but buffer and recoil spring have nothing to do with upper (so long as upper does not have any problems), and the buffer and recoil spring have all to do with the lower receiver extension void depth instead. So we first start with the inner lenght of the receiver extension and this will dictate the needed lengths of the buffer and spring. Hence with the correct lenght/ units in place for the tube inner depth, when you pull back on the charging handle, face of the bolt should retract about 1/4" behind the bolt catch, and the center of the charging handle pull to back of pull, should not increase in tension (spring coils not binding up against each other as the back of the buffer bumper maxes out against the end of tube inner void. Also, going to touch back on stocks, since standard A2 stock uses longer end spacer and end spacer bolt, while the A1 and some of the after market butt stocks will use the shorter A1 butt stock screw as well. On the left, is the longer A2 butt stock screw, while on the right is the shorter A1 butt stock screw).  Note, when too long of butt stock screw is used, will have dent in end of buffer bumper from it tagging the end of protruding into void screw. A2 spacer, and why it uses the longer butt stock bolt.  So if the upper runs fine on another upper, then lets back up to what lower receiver receiver extension and stock is on the rifle, since my guess is that the problem is there with wrong parts, or binding going on with the tube not square to the center line to receiver. And no, you do not use shorter carbine spring and carbine buffer with full length fixed butt stock receiver extension,since this allows the carrier to come back way past the bolt hold open catch, and the carrier key will crash against back of lower receiver at threads loop, to crack the receiver. |

And to add, the face of the bolt catch inner threaded section, should be flush with the face of the mag release catch when installed. If your ending up with the catch threaded section being either half a thread in, or half a thread out, then remove the catch, turn the button 180* in the receiver, then reinstall.  If your still running into feed problems, after you have loaded only one round in the mag, charged, and fired the one round to make sure that bolt is being held back on last round out of mag fired, then need to know what mags and may need to check to make sure that mag catch is retaining the mag high enough in the well to start with. One last thing, and when loading a mag, rasp the back of the mag against something hard before you set it into the well (make sure that mag is seating and locking into the wells mag catch), to seat all the rounds to the back of the mag. When firing, the recoil will keep the rounds to the back of the mag by its self. And last one, do not use bottom of mag as bipod, or as hand hold, since this can cause the mag to be tilted in the well, and will cause all kinds of feed problems. |
