I've had a hbpdw for a while and love it.  It always felt like the buffer spring was weak and recently shooting it I had several failures to chamber rounds.  I could probably eliminate some of these by tuning and polishing a metal mag but would prefer to adjust the system to just run with everything.

The buffer spring is pretty short for the shorter buffer tube and has a smaller diameter. Its stiffer per coil than standard.  I dont think a cutdown standard would work but may try.  It seems like a cutdown flatwire would be optimal if the buffer fits the inner diameter of the coils.

Has anyone found a stronger replacement?

https://www.blackriflearms.com/Enhanced-Buffer-Spring-Assemblies-for-Maxim-CQB-and-HBPDW-Stocks-Braces_p_625.html

They list this same kit for the Maxim CQB and HBPDW, suggesting compatibility between the two.  I also found it interesting that they also state:  "PLEASE NOTE: If you have our Enhanced Compact Buffer PDW KIT for Strikes Viper Stocks & Braces these Buffers & Springs will work with your setup."

Makes me wonder if the Viper PDW flat wire spring/buffer will work in the HBPDW.  I'll have to try it out once I receive my HBPDW.

@bendingo78

Let me know how it works out please. I also have a HBPDW brace. I was having some problems with reliability when I was using an 8” bbl upper suppressed. I installed an adj gas and could still never get it to run 100%.
I recently put a 10.3” URGI upper on it and it seems to be running 100% now. Only have a few hundred rounds through it as of now though.

I have that style brace.  The buffer is "fatter" than a standard buffer, hence the spring is smaller gauge.  A spring designed to work with a standard buffer won't fit on the short buffers.

You are correct.  I just measured it and it's .0655" bigger in diameter.

I love the brace put the spring feels weak like racking a 22 conversion and it struggles to strip rounds out of the magazine.

I ordered the set with a standard buffer since that seems to be running subs and supers fine.  Well see how heavy the new spring is.

I still wonder if the Strike Industries Viper PDW flat spring and buffer will work in the HBPDW.  My Viper PDW brace has been pretty solid.  I will try this buffer and spring combo in the HBPDW as soon as it arrives and the build is complete.

Just got the BRA Enhanced Buffer and Spring Assembly.   Definately a stronger spring.  Slightly thicker wire.  Overall assembly is a half inch longer.  Buffer is the same length but has more metal and less bumper thickness. Weight feels similar.

Installed where the factory one feels like a cmmg 22 conversion bolt, this one is stronger and feels like a standard ar15.

Photos.  Black buffer is stock hbpdw.

Are they the same diameter as well?

Theyre very close to the same outside diameter.  Wire diameter is around .005" bigger on the BRA.

Nice. I went ahead and ordered. Got the H2 buffer though. I’ll update when I get it.

It has to help.  My spring was so weak that it couldnt strip a round from the mag when hitting the bolt release on a locked open bolt.  You could sling shot it and sometimes it would go.    I think I had more failures to feed the fuller the mag was.

I probably should have gotten the heavier buffer as well. Something about another $30 put me off.

This is curious.  Mine is a Maxim and it has no issues stripping rounds off the mags.  I wonder if a Maxim spring would fit your original buffer.

Buffer doesn't have a lot to do with RTB so you are probably money ahead.

That’s kinda odd. SB HBPDW brace right? That’s what I have. My spring seems ok. It certainly has enough power to strip and feed rounds off the mag.
I am mostly on this for the H buffer. 10.3 Super Duty upper with a Lahar 30K suppressor. It’s got a decent amount of back pressure/gets dirty AF fast and is throwing rounds forward at about 2 o’clock. Overgassed. Hoping this helps tame it a bit.
Unfortunately I have to head off to work out of state again for a while tomorrow morning. If the fucking post office could do their jobs properly, I would have had it today. Now I’ll be waiting a while before I can install it and shoot it.
This AR travels with me, so I may have my wife ship it to me once I get settled into my hotel.

Tested the new buffer setup today while testing some 110 aac blacktip loads.

It ran supers 100% but will not run subs anymore. Most of the time it wouldn't even eject the brass while suppressed.  Might have to load the subs hotter.

Well the buffer may not have been my issue with subs.  Just figured out that one of the carrier key screws had snapped off and the key was loose.

After replacing the carrier key screws I can say that the new buffer and spring didn't cause the issues.

Supers and subs ran 100%

Good shit man. Do you think it was the key screw the entire time? Or still maybe a bit of weak spring?

That's a good question.  I still think my spring was weak.  I don't feel like the key was dragging contributing to the issue.

I've seen a few people saying the maxim cqb jp captured spring would fit in the hbpdw. Haven't found an exact measurement for it anywhere yet though so I'm not entirely sure.

I remember reading about this awhile back and was very curious. I didn’t want to order the thing without knowing for sure if it would fit and function in the SBHBPDW.

Ideally this is what I’d like to have for my dedicated suppressed set up.

Maybe whenever I finally get back home I’ll order it and see how it goes.

Have a HBPDW and ordered a Maxim SCS while discussing it with the CS team at JP(they werent sure about fitment since they done have a HBPDW on site) and it works you just need basically a quarter sized spacer in the back in order to get your preload cause the SB buffer tube is just slightly longer than the Maxim tube(passed the info on to their Cs so they can inform people if they ask for now on). It actually works pretty good too. I'm running a 10.5 suppressed and went with the heavy SCS and it is amazing.

So I finally got home for the weekend and dropped in the Black Rifle Arms spring and H3 buffer.

The spring is strong! I almost feel like it might be to much…can’t confirm that because I haven’t live fired it yet.
Will update when I do.

Just built an 8.5” 5.56 with the HBPDW brace and seeking heavier buffer and maybe spring and this thread is of great interest to me.  Any updates to share?
