Grease or oil for the bcg and bolt lugs? My thought is that grease will stay put and not run or migrate like oil does. What say you? Thanks. |

| I put Mobil One synthetic 10w-30 in a dropper bottle and use it to oil everything. For my non-super duty weapons, I use mainly the PSA premium BCGs that are phosphate which helps keep the oil in place. |

Stays put longer and components wipe clean easier. |

The technically correct answer is oil. Most well built ARs with run like a top with hardly any lubrication at all. That's why you'll get a thousand different answers on what lube is best. Because realistically it'll likely run without it. I've tried almost every lube on the market, majority of them work the same. I personally use a mil spec (MIL-PRF-63460 E) clp that's non toxic. Biosynxtra. Cleans up easy. Lubes just fine. Pretty sure it's safe to drink. Though I wouldn't do it myself. |
| Here is my take on this and I have been using this philosophy for close to 40 years. If it rotates, oil, if it slides grease. I have been using Wilson Combat or Slip 2000 grease on my BCG for years and years without any issue. |

I use Mil-Comm TW25B applied the Cherry Balmz way. I used to use Mobil 1 synthetic oil, but any oil tends to just fling and burn off way quicker. Grease stays much better, IMO https://www.cherrybalmz.com/post/how-to-lube-an-ar-for-maximum-reliability |

I also put some on the gas rings and bolt tail and a dab on the extractor spring. I also put a dab on the three raised notices of the charging handle. Only thing people will probably go crazy with is I use soap and water to clean. lol I don’t use oil at all. If I feel like storing it I put some grease on a range and rub it all over. |

It's designed to run dry.. my kid was apprenticed to a gunsmith who worked on modern infantry weapons. His M4 never malfunctioned, his PSG would grab it off the rack and qualify with it.. Mine? Very, very light film of grease on the wearing surfaces of the bolt and bolt carrier. Wipe it down with a greasy rag. Cleaned it with brake cleaner or Ed's Red. |

Even an M1 Garand/M14 grease pot with the little spatula attached to the lid is stupidly easy. Oil or grease left in the chamber is going to be less-than-ideal. |

I never put any validity in that saying. Rotation is simply sliding in a circle. It's all just relative motion between two surfaces. Friction is friction. Were does that saying even come from? The tighter the fitment, the thinner your lubricant should be. Oil and grease are the same thing with varying degrees of thickness. And ofcourse the operating temperature will affect thickness, so take that into account on whatever you're lubricating. In the summer grease is fine, in the dead of winter, perhaps a thinner oil. Beyond that, a gun is not an engine, the operating conditions aren't extreme enough for it to matter that much. Just lube it with something. |

Lubriplate SFL-0 Works great under all conditions i've tested it in, stays in place really well, doesn't get gummy when cold. |

I like their grease a few places but mostly oil and next time I buy I'll probably do motor oil. |

| ive used the Mobile 1 red syn grease on AK's for a very long time , tbut hats a different animal than an AR , CLP in my opinion is better on an AR , the reason is , the grease in an AK is totally different as its piston driven , cleaner in the receiver , where as a AR has carbon being sent to the receiver as its a direct impingement so carbon will turn the grease "heavy" in a manner of a few shots , it will just collect the carbn until it creates a malfunction by gumming everything up |
