What is a good zero distance for an 11.3? I was thinking 25, but my buddy told me I should do 50. It's meant to be a work firearm so more than likely 100yds and in, with most possible encounters being under 25.

50………depending on ammo will look something like this.

25yrds aiming center mass shot about an inch low

50 shooting center mass shot will be dead on

100/200 Shooting center mass shot will be an inch high.

300 shooting center mass shot will be dead on

Either 36 yards or 50 yards depending on ammo.
For shorter type barrels I always use a 50 yard zero.

All of my less than 16" barrels are zeroed at 50 and data gathered at 100 for impact point

I have found the 50 yard zero works best for that length barrel.

If it’s for your work then refer to your department SOP. Otherwise it is determined by your ammo, optic height, and optic functionality. KD zeroes are great for range confirmation but real world use should drive it, as well as your practice at UD engagement. Folks don’t stand upright presented like a B27 in reality.

Could be a 35 yard, 57 yard, or 100 yard. Who knows. Define the acceptable radius to do MPBR.

What ammo are you shooting? 50/300?

I'd do 50. That's what I generally run. Puts me pretty close out to the distances I shoot on the targets I use. Your needs might be different, but a 50yd zero will work from cqb out to a 300yd coyote. Really all I need

I know 50yds is popular, I ran the #s based mostly on my optic height and MPBR and I think I settled on a 40yd zero.

Run your data through a ballistic calculator (barrel length/load/optics are all factors).

Live fire at a range to confirm.

50 yd zero has worked best for my purposes.

Considering your distances I would recommend the 50 over the 36.  If you had mentioned you might be taking shots to 300 then the 36 zero might be a better option but considering your data points I believe the 50 would be best.
I know you can feel it let it in people will still hate you in the end.

I'm guessing this is an LE patrol rifle? Go 50 yards all day every day as it'll give you the flattest trajectory to 100. 50 yards is the LE standard regardless of load or barrel for a reason. Your max point blank range will likely be shorter than 250 with a 11.3" rifle, but not significantly so.

Without you mentioning your optic's height over bore, it's just everybody guessing

If you want to knkw for sure, you have to use a site like Shooters Calculator and plug in numbers specific to your setup.

Add 1.2" to your optic's centerline for true HOB. HOB = center of bore to rail (=1.2") + optic's center to pic rail.

This ^^^

Also, ACTUAL velocity from said barrel is a significant factor that needs consideration as well, along with bullet weight.

With most shortie 5.56 guns, a 100 yard zero is a good place to start, depending on optic choice.  Rough in about 1" low @ 25 and confirm dowrange.

If the likely distance is 100 yards and in, then zero for 100. That will give you the flattest trajectory to 100.

I don't know what all of the hubbub is with the whole 50 yard zero being some sort of magic zero out to 300. With a 50 yard zero, you're gonna be a mil low, give or take, at 300.

If you want to zero a red dot for general purpose, a 50 yard zero is pretty flexible giving you something a 50/150 or so zero.

I just realized that the post is from 9 months ago and the OP never showed back up.

this is for 10.5" but there won't be a noticeable difference for 11.3"

50/200. Just ran my 75g this weekend to confirm at 200. Drop was so negligible I didn't even adjust

Any supersonic AR load with absolute or lower 1/3 cowitness optic... any caliber and any barrel length... 50 yards.

It will be flat shooting at 60 -160 yards where 25y zero wiill be sky high.  Like miss head shots totally over the head high.

Also, inside 50 yards with a 50y zero you can just remember two ranges... 20 yards and 40 yards.
2" hold over out to 20 yards,.
1" hold over past that to 40 yards.
Then dead hold out to 60 yards.

This keeps POA/POI less than 1" from perfect and usually less than 1/2"  from perfect for close range hold offs.

36y zero is harder to find a range to do and sacrifices excess rise at common mid range distances of 60-160 yards to get less drop at 250-300 yards.

You won't be taking shots as a police officer at over 250 yards with your patrol rifle, but 60-160 yards is a distinct possibility.

He won't be dead on at 300 nor an inch high at 200. And 100 will be over an inch high.

I'd go with a 50 yard zero, with confirmation at 200 and 300. I run a 12.5" that gets me 2900fps with M193. Ot hits its maximum trajectory height of about 2" high at 125 yards and pretty much puts me right on at 200, after which it starts to drop like a brick.

Depends what you are using it for, home defense or a truck gun i wouod do 25 or 36 yards. I have my 11.5 setup at 25 yards.

Out of an 11.5" bbl, a 75 yard zero has a very similar trajectory to a 16" barrel with a 100y zero.  Both basically crest at their respective zeroes and start to slowly drop.  I hate low holdovers which you'd need with a 36 or 50y zero; 75 is perfect for me.
