I saw a Franklin Armory 556 11.5 "Reformation" upper at a gun show. I saw it had straight lands and grooves, and when I looked it up, it was designed so it could be classified as in "other" when fully assembled on a lower. What is something like this worth? Is there any demand for it? thanks |

Well, a fully assembled Reformation retail MSRP is roughly $1,000 to $1,800 depending on model/caliber and where you buy it. No idea what the street value or demand would be for the upper. That said... I don't understand the point or purpose. They make absolutely no sense to me. You have straight lands and grooves or no "rifling" at all (smooth bore). Sure, you have an SBR without legally having an SBR, but you sacrifice velocity, bullet stability, energy transfer and distance as a result. Franklin Armory even admits the round will begin to tumble only 2 feet past the muzzle. That's why they claim to be safe for suppressor use. I'm not smart enough to understand whatever ballistic advantage exists for when the rounds keyhole downrange. |

Franklin made them to bypass the SBR regulations and for a 100 yard gun that could shoot 4moa. I wouldn't want to catch a keyholing round anywhere on my body any more than a regular round. Think of it as a flechette of sorts, especially with an FRT. I can respect them for walking up to the ATF and poking them in the chest with their products, we need more of that. |
