So I got a Teslong for Christmas... Not sure how much I'll use it, but seems like a "nice to have" just in case I ever think I need it. This is some footage from an AR: -Geissele 16" barrel -About 9k rounds total -Isn't melted red hot or anything, but is used in 2G and hit factor type rifle matches, I'd consider it light to moderate rates of fire in training for such. I'll use a glove on my support hand in the summer due to heat. -Was cleaned with my normal method of punching Hoppes soaked patches down the bore till they come out pretty clean, then run a couple dry patches. -I haven't noticed any drop off in accuracy, but haven't really benched it trying to shoot great groups recently either. Stuff I notice: -The rifling a few inches on either side of the gas port looks to me like it could pass for brand new -The gas port is obviously eroded some, but doesn't seem too bad? I've been running the same Sprinco white/standard carbine buffer in it for a long time and seems gassed about the same as it ever has. -Rifling directly in front of the chamber looks a lot more rough -Not sure whether the discoloring is from lazy cleaning or something else. Gas port of an 11.5" Colt upper after 20k, nearly all sequential mag dumps, nearly all rounds Wolf Black Box Poly. Became a 12 MOA blaster around 16k, doing 10 back to back mag dumps might have been a factor....... Anyway, out of curiosity cleaned the heck out of it. Sequential Wipe-Out then Kroil/Paste, etc, etc. Then was back to 4-5" 5 shot groups at 100 yds again. Old eyes, irons and all.

Yes, the throat is where the barrel lives or die. Every time you shoot the rifle, it erodes the throat just a little bit each time. No way to stop it unless you never shoot it. With that said, barrels are consumables. You shouldn't get too attached to it and always have a spare one handy. With that said, I do not see anything off about the bore scope but my advice is to rely mostly on the groupings and measure it with a throat gauge instead. |
| I had a 20" milsurp that looked like that- what I thought was alligator cracking- used some "Lucas Fuel Injector" cleaner to attack the carbon and that barrel came out clean as a whistle - the "alligator cracking" was actually carbon... it looked just like yours... you also have some heavy streaks of carbon and some copper fouling - that you might have to use a few things to get rid of but I think with some elbow grease you can clean that barrel up almost like new.... and slow down on the scope videos - makes me seasick. |
