Calling all Daniel Defense DD5 series owners in .308!

What kind of accuracy are you seeing?  I've been cycling through a variety of stuff to see what I can get and have not found anything that will do better than about ~1.5 MOA in my DD5v3 (16").  I've tried:
1.  various ball ammo at 145/147gr (PMC, GGG, Norma, PPU, S&B) - not really good results.  some minute of man, a few 2-3" groups with some fliers, Norma seemed to do best.
2.  150gr loads (hornady FMJ, S&B SP's, gold dots, Norma white tail) - similar results
3.  168gr S&B, GGG match loads - 1.5" or so
4.  175gr GGG and some older SSA loads I have - 1.5" or so (GGG - best of the bunch)
5.  180gr SP's - 2" or so

I have a 6.5G 18" that shoot sub 1 MOA with Hornady 123gr American Gunner ammo, so I think I am capable of doing it.  I am wondering if this is simply as good as it's going to get, hence the question to others about accuracy.  I was ASSuming, for as expensive as it was, that I'd get better accuracy (and based on having other DD 5.56 rifles that will shoot 1 MOA or better with match ammo).  I tried going from lighter to heavier bullets to see if I could find some trending.  As expected, the match ammo does better than ball, hunting ammo (SP's) somewhere in between.

And...for fun, and for reference, I have a very old and used DPMS G2 .308 that I bought for about $1k when it came out, that shoots sub 2" groups with Tula 150gr beater ammo.  So I'm not getting "much" better with my 2X priced DD.  I have replaced the factory DD trigger with a Larue MBT, just FYI, so that rules out the crappy factory trigger.

Any input is appreciated...regarding ammo, etc (i.e. telling me to learn how to shoot is not going to really help).  I bought this for a long range/scoped rifle, but am now considering putting a red dot or LPVO on it.

Thanks!

Do you have access to FGMM 168gr or 175gr ?

Or some 155gr Hornady Amer. Gunner.

I would try some of that next.

I can buy some, however, the 175gr have been used by my buddy on his $500 Ruger American Ranch .308 and he shot a 5 group cloverleaf looking pattern, definitely under 1" at 100Y.  I know that does not mean anything for MY rifle/barrel, but pretty impressive for that ammo anyway.

Thanks!

Anyone?  Surely there are some DD owners around?

I have the 18” V4 model and I get 1”ish with 168gr Hornady Tap ELD Match.

For all of you following my saga (probably no-one), update on some different ammo

1.  FGMM 168gr - ~1 MOA
2.  FGMM 175gr - ~1.75 MOA
3.  Gold Dot 168gr - ~2 MOA
4.  Winchester 7.62 x 51 match, 168gr - ~2 MOA
5.  two more 5-round groups of GGG 175gr - ~1.5MOA.
6.  for fun, PPU m80 ball - looks like a 12 gauge pattern :(

The answer from DD when I raised the accuracy issue was "So with a good 168gr round, you can likely expect around a 1-MOA rifle on average. That is going to really just depend more on the glass, rest, shooter, etc. The guns can run sub-MOA with the perfect settings though."

So there it is, with the "gold standard" I can get 1MOA.  But I won't be using almost $2/round ammo very often.  I perhaps should have done my research better as I was looking for something that might be labeled a "precision semi-auto" (yes, standards lower vs. bolt gun).  I don't believe the DD5 v3 is it.

every rifle has its preferred ammo. Bullet length and weight are not the only variables, type and volume of powder will also have an impact. I was taught to sort the cases by mass as well as the more uniform they are, the more uniform the internal volume. If you really want to see what it can do, you have to control its diet as well.

Fuck that...it's a DD, not a PSA.   You should be getting 1 moa with mid grade fiocchi.   Sell it and get a JP LRP.

might be the rifle. but, there are more variable with the shooter.

Seems like what the OP was doing was sound.  He was at least on a bench using bags...   OP, do you have a sled you can use?

Oh, and what optic/mount are you using?

I was prone last time with front and rear bags...I may do one more with a lead-sled or something locked in like that before attempting to send back to DD and maybe send them pics of the output.  I used the same setup with my 6.5G, no issues doing 1MOA (123gr Hornady American Gunner).

Optic:  https://www.meoptasportsoptics.com/us/produkt/optika6-3-18x50-ffp-13178_13683/  - not a Nightforce, but sufficient for 100Y (MRAD reticle).

I agree with the "it's not a PSA" comment; I was thinking at least close to 1 MOA with "reasonably" good ammo, not just the $2/round stuff (I in fact bought a case of GGG 175gr match ammo thinking it would be good enough - it is on my buddy's Ruger American Ranch rifle!).  I've run through 12+ ammo types (a few less if you take out the ball stuff) and only 1 gets me close to 1MOA (FGMM 168gr).  Thanks for the input!

Wrong thread, woops.  I'll be testing 175gr Federal GMM here soon.  I'll let you know my groups.

I had thought about buying one of these rifles, Glad I did not. For the kind of money they ask you should be getting sub moa with at least 1-2 brands of ammo guaranteed.

I do agree with Jd2395 expectations of the rifle.

And thebert for that matter.

I would love to roll ammo specifically for this rifle to see just what it likes and what its limits really are.

What barrel twist do you have? I have the newer one with 1:10 twist and it’s fairly accurate with some Winchester m80 ball. I haven’t shot mine with any other ammo yet, but I’d like to pick up some FGMM

In this case I don't think it's so much a gas gun v.s. bolt gun issue, but rather a junior manufacturer with very little experience issue. Here is why I say that..buckle up..

Centurion's 16" CHF/CL FN barreled CM4 rifle out shot dd's $3000 dollar bolt action delta 5  in Mr.GunsNGears testing despite having the disadvantages of:

- Being a semi auto gas gun v.s. bolt action
- Being fitted with an optic with less magnification
- Having a standard mil spec, rack grade trigger
- Tested in significant wind v.s. dead calm conditions with a projectile (.223/5.56) that is more susceptible to wind influence than that used in the dd delta 5 (6.5 creedmore)

It is truly an embarrassment, see for yourself.

The centurion video is not working. Plus, you are comparing a completely different gun that is not the DD5.

Look at MAC's video of the DD5, which had great results.

to answer one of the earlier questions - mine is dated around August of last year and I waited on it as there were none available, so I assume manufacture date is not too far in front of that.

Re: MAC review - that actually got me excited based on his results with "cheap" ammo (non $2/round match ammo).  In fact, I bought a bunch of the Norma ball ammo with great anticipation.

I posted a link to this thread in the DD industry thread to see if there is any traction there.  I have no hard feelings about it and I suspect if I asked to send it back for review and possible replacement, I'm pretty sure they would do it (based on prior interactions).
