Disclaimer: I'm a dinosaur.. the required bifocals no longer play well with iron sights .. I've got several oldschool carry handle A1 and A2 variant AR15s...they are perfectly functional, but no longer all that useful to me specifically. I need an optic. The issue is, optics mounted way up on top of the carry handle necessitate a high head, poor cheek weld, etc .  The forward carry handle mount could be an option. Slap an appropriate red dot on it, abd it's a cost effective conversion for an old guy like me . Questions: Is this a kludge solution that just doesn't work? SKS dust cover scope mounts are a good example: the just don't work well. Are these the AR15 equivalent? Is there a "go to" preferred specific brand. I should look at? Other options? Yeah, the solution is buy another AR, which I will do. But I'm trying to find an inexpensive way to get use out of these Closet Queens.... If I can find a suitable optic mount, I'll throw an optic on these and put them into use... |

That particular PRI mount is gtg. Some of the cheaper mounts really obstruct the iron sight channel in the carry handle. Some of the cheaper mounts aren’t as refined and are just bulkier overall. I used a similar mount back in the late 90’s with a fixed carry handle upper I bought cheap. Once AR-15 flat top uppers became common I switched out the carry handle upper to a flat top. I can’t remember the brand of mount I purchased which looked very similar to the PRI. The cheaper mounts were a waste of money IMHO. Technically they worked but cheap can be junk and most fit into that category for me. |

Yeah those work fine as a quick, easy solution for mounting a simple non-magnified red dot. I had an A2 style gun set up like that, years ago. Worked well, but I don't remember shooting it past 100 yards. Thing is, it's pretty easy to change out the upper, all you need is a barrel wrench and a way to secure it in a vise. I did that with that A2 upper, and never looked back. The rifle is vastly improved. |
