Building a 6mm ARC (Page 1 of 2)

| I have an extra AR lower and upper, and want to build a 6mm ARC. What is the best barrel out there in 18”? And if I plan on suppressing it, is it suggested to run an adjustable gas block? |
|
You will most likely need an adjustable gas block for suppressed use. I am using a Griffin adjustable on both of my 6 ARC builds. My Sons of Liberty 18" barrel is proving to do very well with factory Hornady 108gr and 105gr ammo so far. There seems to be some recent controversy on reddit though with a user receiving one of their barrels in a 1:8 twist instead of the advertised 1:7. I've not had good results with Noveske in the past so I naturally think their barrels are expensive for what they are. Proof is recommended a ton, but they have long leads and have a bunch of barrel extension issues. Ballistic Advantage and Faxon are well...what they are...budget barrels that may shoot well or may not. Patriot Valley Arms and MTE Machining have good reputations with an boutique ammo manufacturer I know. He has good results with them across multiple platforms and calibers. Whenever I shoot my 18" out, I intend to go with an MTE Machining barrel. https://mtemachining.com/6-arc-rexus-ultra-bolt-headspaced-and-lug-matched/ Here are a few groups from my SOLGW. It now has around 100-120 rounds through it. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Another option is Rexus Outfitters. Rexus get their barrels from Green Mountain built to Rexus specification. The first batch of 6 MM ARC barrels got good reviews. This batch just recently arrived so there are several options. Rexus 6 MM ARC/6.5 Grendel/22 ARC bolts get good reviews. Any rack grade barrel is going to be luck of the draw but for the price these have been good barrels. The owner of Rexus is the administrator of the 6.5 Grendel forum and handled the group buy barrels then opened the online store 6.5 Outfitters. With the release of 6 ARC and 22 ARC he changed the name to Rexus outfitters. I have two group buy 6.5 Grendel barrels (16” & 18”) and a 12” 6.5 Grendel barrel from 6.5 Outfitters. https://rexusoutfitters.com/shop-all/ |

My first is a Lilja and it was all jacked up from the factory. They fixed it and it shoots very well. https://www.ar15.com/forums/general/6ARC-upper-issue/5-2821880/? Not sure if they’ll factory cut a barrel for an OCL or AEM can for me. |

I have been very happy with the Odin Works 18" 6 ARC barrel. It comes with an adjustable as block. Mine does very well with 108Gr ammo. Here is a 5 shot group at 100 yards (circled in yellow) Attached File |

Best barrel is proof. Best bolt is rexus ultrabolt. And no, you dont need an adjustable gas block. That is absolutely ridiculous. AGB's are worthless. Do not take that advice. Just get a rifle+1 gas length. No, proof does not have long lead times. Just get a full stainless barrel. The advice here is wild. And inaccurate. I have a ton of experience with 6arc. Lilja/noveske/centurion are next in like for 6arc barrels. Do not use billet uppers in 6arc. My recommendation is centurion thermal fit uppers. |

How about 6.5 Grendel, no billet upper as well for your recomendation? |

I am interested in this caliber. So, I am paying attention to the barrels mentioned. But, I am STILL waiting for the AAC and PSA versions of the Surefire ICAR receiver sets to be released. Not because I want the dedicated magazines, but, because I want the enlarged barrel extension and bolt face. This caliber, and the Grendel become interesting when they can be pushed just a little harder. db |

Bill Alexander always used to say the 6.5 Grendel could have used a little more oomph, but it wasn't possible in the existing AR15 platform. I think the next step up from the 6.5 Grendel that you're looking for is FN's prototype 6.5x43 LICC — which is basically a necked-up 6mm GT, which would be the next step up from 6mm ARC. Within the constraints of the platform, 6.5 Grendel and 6mm ARC are supremely capable cartridges. |
|
Rexus, Thank you for showing me the FN 6.5x43 intermediate. But, no, that is not what I am looking for. I was vocal about what a horrible idea the .277 Fury is, and why, until they actually nerf it. But, it initially had the attributes to sell a new round to the War Department. This new FN intermediate reminds me of Sig's Fury. The dedicated 6ARC uppers have been vapor ware for a year already, but within the last month both PSA and AAC have released updates on their progress. No, they are not identical. The AAC uppers have a much taller height. AAC anticipates their market segment will be pairing it with a muffler and might want the rail height to clear the suppressor's bulk. These receivers are a reason to re-examine both the 6.8spc and the 6.5gendel. Like the LWRC Six8 they will accept the dedicated magazines for both the Six8 and the new 6ARC. The similarities end here. The new receivers will accept a slightly larger barrel extensions. The barrel extensions will accept a slightly larger bolt face as well. I would like a semi auto that could handle the same pressure as a Howa Mini action. This really is not much of a step, but, I want the semi to be built for it. db Edited to Add: Rexus, considering your support for the 6.5grendel I was hoping that this information would have been shared with you. One would think that additional, external vendors for the PSA and AAC products would have actively been sought out. It is easy to imagine an addition demand for their receivers if it improves the performance of the Grendel. In like manner, if the dedicated magazines are significantly more reliable as well as offering a small increase in performance, one would expect the ICAR to become the dominant standard. While I obviously like the AR-15, I do not necessarily think that backwards compatibility is always a good thing. |

This thread has been very expensive for me. Currently here, on the way or waiting to be picked up... - Proof Research 20" SS barrel - JP bolt / bolt carrier - Timney ARPro trigger - Centurion Arms heat fit assembled upper / lower set and rail - Magpul UBR I got a screaming deal on a Crimson Trace FFP 3-18X - 50mm scope. Even with that, this build is well over $2500. This is my first expensive / fancy AR build. I've been lucky while being cheap... I have an old Colt HBAR that I rebarreled with a Rock River National Match barrel. It's consistently sub .75 MOA, with good ammo. But, my club is putting in a 600 yard range, so I want something that handles the wind a bit better. ETA: Is there a secret handshake that goes along with 6mm ARC? We 10mm bros have one. |

Still have some messing around to do, but mostly done. Haven’t fired it yet. Will this work better with an A2 tube, spring and buffer? It currently has a carbine tube, buffer and spring. Attached File ETA: It’s a 20” Proof Research barrel with a rifle + 1” gas system. |

This is a stupid take. AGB's are not worthless. They may not make sense in every situation, for every build, but they absolutely are a useful component and becoming way more common and more durable. The Griffin is pretty much idiot proof, if not super tunable on the fly. The Riflespeed is probably the best out there, but expensive; in one of the other threads a guy said that he had roughly 20K through one on a competition rifle without issue. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean that you have to give out bad advice. |

I swapped out the UBR stock for a PRS and put in a rifle length buffer tube, spring and buffer, then took it to the range. Was getting short stroking with Frontier 105 grain FMJ. I got this cheap stuff for rough sighting in and breaking in the barrel (lots of cleaning). Interestingly enough, it was grouping very well with it. Hornady Black (108 grain BTHP) wasn't having any problems, but wasn't as accurate. Looks like the Frontier load is going a little bit slower and has a slightly lighter bullet, so it must have lower pressure too. I have an adjustable gas block, but it is wide open. I emailed Proof Research, and they recommended using a carbine buffer. I don't really want to do that, with a rifle length tube and spring. I emailed JP, and asked if they liked the idea of using their low mass rifle length buffer with their full mass bolt / bolt carrier group, and they said to give it a try. They also commented that Proof Research barrels do tend to have smaller gas port holes. So, the lighter JP rifle buffer is on the way. Looks better with the PRS stock and I think it is a lot more comfortable. Attached File Attached File Yeah, I know, only a three shot group, but I was cleaning it every 3 shots. Once I get it running well, and past the break-in, I'll shoot some 5 shot groups with the expensive stuff. |

But 100% of the forged have. Forged is also just stronger. So its a no brainer to me. |

Ive only tested 2 loads personally. Ive tested the hornady 105g eld black, and the 108g eld match. From my experience, the 108s run as pictured, .25 to .5 moa. The 108s ran better than the 105s. Ive never needed to test anything else, as these 108s are about as good as they can get. I couldn't imagine my groups being any tighter out of a gas rifle. Geissele makes their own barrels, sure, but there's debate around that. I think what's realistic is they finish their own blanks, I dont think they have a cold hammer forge personally. If they do, they're the only company that has never showcased it ans bragged about it. And they conveniently started selling CHF barrels right after FN starts contracting them out. They claim they do, vaguely. But honestly who knows. Maybe im wrong. Id love to see the factory footage or something. My Ai search engines also tell me that its unlikely they chf their own barrels, due to their marketing stuff. For whatever thats worth A duty rifle 6arc with a CHF CL barrel would be sick. I wish 6max caught on, as it would be the same ballistics and even more reliable. I hope geissele sells their 6arc barrels separately some day |

Hmmm you can definitely get brt gas tube that are tuned for both suppressed and unsurpassed use. One might just be slightly more gassy than a dedicated suppressed gas tube. Which, to me, is a way better trade off than well....any AGB's. Especially since the vast majority of people that use them either run them fully open or they end up seizing and dont adjust anyways. Hell, even gas blocks like PWS piston AGB's seize up with enough carbon. I personally dont ever see a situation where an agb is ever needed and out weighs the benefit of a dedicated tube. But thats just me. Maybe I came across too harshly on my original comment. It wasn't intended. Agb's make sense, to me, on piston systems and thats it. DEFINITELY not on any full length rifle or rifle+1 gas system. |

I will say this... a buddy of mine is a state champ / Presidents 100 High Power shooter, and one of his teammates (who is better than him) has been hyping Geissele barrels lately, so they must have something going on. I'm guessing he's probably using their cut rifling barrels though. For their Stratomatch barrels, they say this: "416R stainless steel cut-rifled barrel, precision machined in-house for true match-grade accuracy." That could mean they are buying the blanks and just finish machining them. With SOCOM contract money, that would buy a CHF machine. |

So I tried four different kinds of expensive ammo... Federal loaded with Berger, Hornady ELD Match, ELD Varmint and Match Hunter. It didn't like any of them. So I went back to the relatively inexpensive Frontier 105 grain FMJ, and this gun just loves it. The last I looked there was no published BC for that Hornady 105 FMJ bullet. Anyone have a source? Got this today. I hope it likes at least one factory load, but I’ll reload for it. Attached File |

They shot great in my bolt guns, but I saw some weird fliers in my gassers. Maybe it was just me, but I’d shoot several 5 or 10 shot groups to confirm the precision in your rifle. |

I typically don’t shoot FMJ, but I’m willing to give them a try if they’re a relatively inexpensive alternative. |

A couple things though... this 105 grain FMJ isn't even listed as a component for sale on the Hornady website. I emailed them to ask about it. The closest I could find anywhere was Midway has a 105 grain FMJ "factory second" with no manufacturer listed. I sent them a question, but who knows if they will answer. The other downside is that this bullet isn't as slippery as the ELD bullets, which matters at longer ranges. When I start reloading this caliber, I'll try out some Sierra Match Kings and see how they do. Nobody loads factory ammo with them. |

107’s over Varget is my 6arc bolt gun load. Attached File You may run into cycling issues with lower charges, but it’s a good combo, just slower than some other powders. |

Cut rifling is what all of the top precision barrel makers use. It’s not because the CHF machine is too expensive (it is), but the CHF process will often result in a barrel with issues like inconsistent densities of material. When barrels are single point cut, a very exacting blade cuts just a little bit of material on each pass, which puts the least amount of stress on the barrel steel. It’s a tedious process, and it can take upward of 45 minutes to rifle a blank. There was a good interview with Bartlein Barrels about why they do it. I’ve had a half-dozen single point cut barrels from Bartlein, Proof, and Geissele, and they’ve all been great shooters. |

None of the ammo holds up close to my handloads, but that’s to be expected. The most expensive ammo, Federal Gold Medal with the Berger was the worst of the ammo I tried. I’ve had great results with Federal GM in other guns (.223 & .308). Guess my barrel hates Bergers. I noticed you had some functioning problems. I had to switch to a JP low mass rifle buffer to get it to function 100% with the Frontier load, which was slower than all of the other loads. It still wouldn’t function with the Hornady 80 grain Varmint Match load. JP says they’ve noticed Proof barrels with their tubes tend to be undergassed. Has anyone tried CFE223 powder? I’ve noticed in the reloading data that it gets the best velocity with many bullets. I’ve loaded it with .223 73 grain ELDs and it was close in accuracy to the Varget loads out of my Savage Model 12. |
