I may be one of the few, but I’m still committed to the original Armalite AR10B platform. The Armalite pattern AR 10 rifles were great quality in their day, but Armalite refused to evolve and the industry left them behind. The A model was too little too late. The market was asking for 6.5 variants and Armalite found themselves behind the curve. Changes in management focusing on specialized competition models didn’t fill market needs for the premium price they were asking. It is a shame, but it’s a classic example of a company milking a brand until it’s dry and finding themselves overwhelmed with market alternatives, and cheaper generics that provide provided equal or better performance. I’m working on a project and was wondering if anybody has any Ar10 carbine handguards, 16 inch Armalite barrel, or retro Armalite parts buried in their parts drawer that They would be willing to trade or sell? 16” Armalite or Eagle arms barrel prefer chrome lined Heavy or light version I thought I’d post here for a little discussion before post in the equipment exchange. |

Definitions and terms: AR-10 used loosely and for brevity here for all things .308, LR-308, AR-308, etc. and not adhereing to the Armalite name, specifically. AR-10 carbine hand guards are the same measurement as AR-15 midlength. The keypoint with Armalite is their AR-10 carbine barrels and distance from the gas port and shoulder to the barrel extension. Due to the fact Armalite properly accounted for the longer .308 barrel extension, the Armalite gas tubes are about 3/8" longer. For the AR-10 carbine configuration, this allows for the standard midlength hand guard to properly drop in. What appears to be the issue in the market is with the laws around barrel length. Maybe I'm getting started incorrectly here with the explanation but the end result is midlength gas system barrels are cut and made (factoring in the barrel extensions) to measure out to exactly 16". For an AR-15, that's fine. The midlength drop-in hand guard works no problem. With the AR-10 platform, keeping the overall barrel length capped at 16" and with the longer and larger barrel extension means a shorter actual barrel (barrel extension removed). This brings the gas port and gas block shoulder back about a 1/4" (or so). The result being your "standard" midlength drop-in hand guards will not fit. You'll also have to use a standard AR-15 midlength gas tube. The solution for people using AR-15 [overall] measure AR-10 parts is to go with a freefloat hand guard system. You'll save a lot of time and misery. For those of use vintage guys who want the classic AR look, the solution is to shop around for people who actually make a .308 AR barrel, according to the original Armalite dimensions. They are out there. With these properly cut barrels (with proper measurements), you can actually drop in a proper midlength hand guard from any manufacturer. The next obstacle you'll be up against is if you want a railed HG, it'll need to be the proper height, depending if you have a high or low-profile upper receiver. Extra note: you'll also want to investigate the taller AR-10 FSBs from Armalite, and then the people who can properly install them. |

I have a free float option but I was thinking about my options. I’ve got the OEM FSP and A2 upper for the project. I looked through the link and didn’t see much for an AR10B. Thanks for your post. |

Mine came with a flat top receiver and railed gas block. Never could get the sights to work right, but I got lucky and found a Larue rifle length rail. That thing is a bit of a unicorn as well.
