Posting this as it might be of interest to folks with ambi-lowers. I bought new ambi-lower (from very high end top tier manufacturer). Slide very rarely locked back after last round with aluminium GI magazines with green followers (that had served me well many troublefree years with non-ambi ARs). Magpul Pmags worked fine. With both mag types bolt catch was hitting follower, so dimensions were fine and bolt always locked back when cycling by hand with empty mag. Figured first that it might be gas-leak on upper or something and tested with known good upper -> same issue. After doing bunch of reading about follower evolution, and figuring out that ambi-bolt catch is tiny bit heavier, I figured it might be the combination of added bolt catch weight, combined to follower-tilt caused by feeding the last round, and unlucky timing. The only thing to eliminate was possible follower-tilting back, so I updated the green followers to magpul anti-tilt followers. Result: Theory proven: No tilt, BHO works and catches bolt every time after last round with all my GI-Mags. So, lesson of they: ambi-lowers seem more sensitive to follower tilt. Fix is cheap and easy, dont use obsolete followers. |
