I shoot some off of bipod/bench. I have an Accutac BR4. To eliminate any bounce I have a mat cut to size. Its grassy so it absorbs the bounce and also raises the front of the bipod about 1/2"- 3/4". I put the bipod legs out in front at 45 degrees to keep it low (at 90 degrees it works fine but its high). Question or thought is -- my 30 round magazines clear by about 1/2". I was thinking about switching to 20 rounders for more clearance or a "just in case". Any thoughts on 20 round magazines? Thanks |

I have shorty magazines for all of my rifles for clearance in these situations. 30s are great when you’re on your feet, but they limit you big time when you’re prone or even on a bench. I don’t bother with 20s and just use 10s when I’m shooting from a bench. |

I own a pile of 30s but they are just that , a pile. Don't believe I have stuck one in a gun and used it for 15 years. 20s work way better for me from a bench or any type of position shooting (prone , kneeling or offhand). OP with bipod legs at 45degrees sounds like he needs a shorter bipod |
| I use Magpul 10rd mags for shooting from the bench for load development. The mag barely sticks out of the magwell. |
I hated going to weddings. All the grandmas would poke me and say "You're next". They stopped that when I started doing it to them at funerals.

Most use the BR5 for AR shooting (which is taller than the BR4) for 30 round mag clearance. If I didnt have the mat my 30 wouldnt clear the table I dont believe. The mat is what makes the 30's usable. Accutac bipods are the most solid I have ever used. My debate with the 20's vs the 30's are the 20's are handier in all situations but the 30's offer more without changing mags as often. |
| FWIW... 10rd mags drop free readily from my bench testing.. allowing less movement inserting the next load to be tested. |

I have lots of 20s. Magpul straight and new curved Gen3, USGI with metal and with polymer followers, Lancer L5.translucent and opaque, etc. The shortest OAL internally seems to be my Lancer L5 translucent FDE 20. Somehow, in my precision rifles, it seems to present the rounds in such a way it doesn't run the bullets onto the feed ramps as low, so it alters bullets the least during semi auto fire and provides the best accuracy by the tiniest of fractions... but long 77 TMK handloads touch the front and drag or won't fit. The USGI has the most room for long loads. Specifically, an old metal follower Colt USGI... but I only have one and the finish is really worn off so I don't use it much. The Magpul straight 20 worked, but I misplacedit in my gear room and they stopped selling them long ago, so I never got any more. Tbey look better than the curved IMO. The curved 20s are 100% reliable but are the heaviest, have a short OAL internally, and in one of my lowers won't drop free. Perhaps I am fooling myself with the Lancer being more accurate but if I ever have an odd accuracy anomaly I just find my trusty translucent FDE Lancer 20 and it goes away. A couple of my translucent Lancers had a bit of plastic flashing sticking up out the top of the mag near tbe feed lips, which I had to cut away with a razor, while all others, including my opaque Lancers, were perfect, so IMO translucent Lancers had the worst fit and finish of all my 20 round mags and the short internal length can make loading even factory 77 grain ammo a slower and more tedious process since there is not a ton of room to prevent the bullet tips from catching and you have to be more careful on cartridge position before pushing down. My wife runs only the smoke translucent Lancer 20s in her AR and they have been great with factory ammo from 55 grain to 77 Razorcore. You should also consider even shorter 10 round 5.56 mags if you really want to make prone accuracy testing easy for reloads. I only have Magpul 10 rounders and they work great, but don't work in my mag pouches as they are so short they disappear. I dont own any but the 5 round mags I have tried are so short they are harder to remove and I was not a fan. |
