If it's a Colt, it's a copy of an original ArmaLite.
I am not LARRYG36.
Racing is life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.
If your AR10 is marked Geneseo, IL, it's still an AR10 no matter what some people say.

I called ArmaLite tech just to make sure.
On the ArmaLite Inc. AR10: Bolt face depth is .128" Lug length is .312" He said with some of the barrels on the market, you can create a case head separation issue if the headspace is too long using DPMS and ArmaLite parts with bolts and barrels mis-matched. |

I know the barrel. It's are threaded differently, but are the receivers different? I.e. Can I use an armalite rail and barrel nut on a dpms upper? Someone is offering me an armalite rail in a trade. I thought the bbl nuts were threaded differently betwn the DPMS & Armalite. I could be wrong. Might also depend on your rail height, as DPMS's varies. |

The uppers are different. So an armalite bbl nut won't fit on dpms upper. But the armalite tube will thread onto the dpms bbl nut. So the trade will work for me I'll just buy a new barrel nut. |

Just a quickie here about the Palmetto State Armory PA10 lowers.
There have been some reported issues here on AR15.com about not fitting Magpul SR25/LR308 mags. The PA10(mine) had no problem with C-Products 308 mags and IMI Defense mags. Magpul on my PA10 lower doesn't fully engage the mag catch. There is a thread post from someone else about the same issue. |

For those wondering what the differences must be between the Armalite AR-10 barrel and a KAC SR-25 (nominal DPMS), here are some prints: Attached File ![]() ![]() The first print shows the nominal end-of-barrel extension to gas block shoulder for both variants. The second shows DPMS-only, and the third Armalite-only. Use an Armalite AR-10 gas tube for the Armalite (duh), and a standard 5.56 M16/AR-15 gas tube for a KAC SR-25/DPMS-length barrel. All three prints seem to accommodate a .75" gas block (if you're buying an off-the-shelf replacement barrel verify the gas block you have or selected will fit). The old Armalite AR-10 Technical Notes stated that bolt and bolt carrier dimensions are close between the Armalite and KAC SR-25. The DPMS may have different lug lengths and bolt face depth. WARNING: YOU MUST CHECK FOR PROPER HEADSPACE PRIOR TO FIRING TO PREVENT INJURY OR DEATH. CARRIER: The AR-10B carrier is virtually identical to that of the SR-25. It is externally phosphated instead of chrome plated as with the SR-25, but is chrome plated in the gas expansion chamber like the carrier of the M-16. The carrier key surface is .010 inch farther from the boreline than that of the KMC carrier, and .030 further to the rear for better gas transfer into the carrier. Like the KMC carrier, the ArmaLite carrier will not allow a standard width hammer to enter the ArmaLite Carrier Assembly. Initial testing has shown that the carrier and bolt group is interchangeable with the KMC components. FIRING PIN: Similar to the KMC firing pin, but with several key improvements. The firing pin tip bears a short cylindrical surface just behind the tip. This allows the bolt to have a cylindrical section just behind the bolt face, reducing the possibility of sheared primer material jamming into the opening. The KMC firing Pin and Bolt have tapered surfaces at this point. The ArmaLite firing pin has a single flange, and a cylindrical section before it that mounts a firing pin spring. The firing pin spring greatly reduces the light firing pin strike produced in M-16 type rifles when the bolt locks, and thus reduces the possibility of slam fire. In addition, it positively prevents incorrect assembly of the bolt carrier assembly. The KMC firing pin has two flanges which makes it possible to install the firing pin retainer in front of the second flange: the carrier assembly appears correctly assembled but the firing pin cannot strike the primer. BOLT: The Bolt is similar to that of the KMC model. Like the KMC bolt, it bears tapered lugs with increased root width for added strength. Six locking and one Safety Lug (patent pending) are used. This system provides greater strength than the seven conventional locking lugs of M16 type bolts. The firing pin hole has been reduced in diameter to prevent primer material from extruding into the firing pin hole if cartridge pressures are high or if primer material is soft. This is an AR-10T Carbine with a 16-inch Criterion AR308 barrel with rifle-length gas (standard AR/M16 gas tube) and an SLR Rifleworks rail: Attached File You could tap the DPMS port and insert a screw, then drill a new gas port at the Armalite position if you want keep your Armalite-length furniture and rail. You may not need to weld or seal the DPMS port if your old Armalite gas block seals over it. |

I am building a barrel for a 308 version AR and need a measurement to place the gas port.
In the drawing ar10_740 I see a math deviation at the length of the barrel extension. It reads 12.639 from the shoulder face to the gas port. But if you subtract that from the extension face to the gas block shoulder and add 0.30 you get 1.17. That measurement on my barrel extension is 1.240. I want to use a rifle length gas tube. Does any one have the amount the gas tube extends past the extension shoulder into the upper? I have from the shoulder to base of gas key a 2.500. |
|
There are different Rifle-Length Gas Tubes for the Large Frame AR10s vs DPMS LR-308.
The ArmaLite Inc. Rifle Length Gas system is slightly longer. There are barrel makers out there who think they're using DPMS length, and advertise as such because they used DPMS barrel extensions and bolt lock-up, but are actually using ArmaLite length rifle tube dimensions to the port. I found this out with a Krieger 20" build I had to fix for a friend who was getting a lot of short stroking. |

MEGA Uppers fit ArmaLite AR -10A4 B lowers. MEGA Upper On AR-10 Lower I wonder if the STAG Uppers would fit? |

Photos have disappeared with the photobucket fiasco but there were a few on-line that showed: Larue upper on LMT lower (and vice-versa) ![]() Larue upper on KAC lower / KAC on Larue (etc.) Attached File Armalite on Larue (etc.). Unknown on Larue: ![]() Armalite made uppers that were KAC SR-25-compatible but those sold out decades ago. Armalite AR-10 (Series A, or KAC-DPMS Magpul) uppers don't have the M14 mag stops and are straight compatible. If you have a "B" upper you'll have to grind away those stops to use 7.62 IMIs or Magpuls.

ArmaLites are cheaper than ever nowadays (Def 10s well under a grand when they appear, I remember having to pony up 1250 for my AR10A4 in '07) but are seemingly vaporware, even with the addition of the forward assist and standard mag models. What happened there?
I wish they had a plain-jane 20" model still. 20" chrome lined .308s are hard as hell to find now. I'm happy with my SR-25s but even they are not available with a 20" chrome lined barrel and I want a cheaper, "beater" gun to shoot high volume long range with. |
Go to your safe place.

Since my last two AR-10 builds (Armalite A-pattern) have proven to be the most frustrating builds I have ever done, I figured I would share a few details I have realized but not seen here in this thread.
Tactical Machining, LLC in Deland, FL manufacturers their .308 AR uppers and lowers in the Armalite A-pattern. The lowers and uppers they make are sold with custom rollmarks to Diamondback Firearms in Cocoa, FL. Diamondback produces complete uppers that they market as proprietary to Diamondback AR-10 lowers. Armalite barrels fit the Tactical Machining/Diamondback uppers. Armalite BCG works with the TM/DB uppers. Armalite gas tubes are required for their barrels and uppers as they are a proprietary length (approximately 3/16" longer in both mid-length and rifle-length). Armalite handguards do NOT fit as the upper receiver side profile is different from Armalite made uppers. Standard AR-10 ejection port covers fit, but the rod needs to be cut down as it is too long and interferes with the handguard. AR-15 triggers, FA, and most of the LPK works, with the exception of the takedown pins. I will post some photos soon to show all the areas of concern above. I will update this as the builds are completed. Doing both a 18" and 13.5" (SBR) variant. |
Every now and then you need to unplug to recharge. Funny how that works, huh?
