A friend of mine picked this up from an ex Colt employee.  It is interesting that on the Vietnam Colts, the “C” in a box, and the “VP” in a triangle were SEPARATE stamps, indicating that there were probably TWO separate inspectors.  This must be a post Vietnam stamp where both proofs were manufactured onto the same stamp, so that just one inspector could apply both with just one “hit”.  He does not want to sell it, but it was neat to handle it.

Man...what a jewel, it would be pretty nice to see a Colt end plate square punch too.

My understanding is that that operation was performed hydraulically in a fixture.

What is a “Colt end plate square punch”?
Referring to the Colt factory staking on carbine end plates. IIRC, member @coldblue has stated that Colt has a fixture that torqued and staked in one process.

(At least that's how I read it).

Eta: Wrong source of info, my bad.

I only remember the barrel nut machine that timed and torqued the barrel nut in a single operation.
They also had a fixture set up for the front sight unit. Locked the parts in alignment, drilled the tapered holes, a "head" rotated, and then it set the pins in the same set-up while the parts remained locked together.

Thank you sir.

I'm almost certain that I read of such a beast, now I have to try and find it.

Well, no luck with any sort of Colt staking machinery.....

But, it may well have been done with a punch.

Reportedly HK does theirs with a hand punch:
