Question:  Does anyone make a speedloader for the new Oly 9mm polymer mags?  Just got my Olympic 9mm upper - also lost the ejector spring while cleaning the bolt for the first time so had to order another one, are they hard to replace?   Thanks.

will a 9mm bolt fit in a regular 5.56 upper?

I feel stupid asking this but is that only thing you have to change from the lower of a standard AR the hammer? (besides adding the mag block). I have been reading this thread but getting a bit confused on something things.

I'm a little paranoid after that GSG5 mag disaster a while back, so I check out places I've never heard of, especially when things fit certain patterns... oh crap, does that mean I'm profiling? I have a feeling my captain will be calling shortly...

He's pulling the same crap, pretty much word for word, on at least 3 other sites I don't frequent. Perhaps Juan Jablomi needs to mention something on his facebook page?

Great info here!  I'm thinking of adding a 9mm build to my arsenal.

Need thoughts/critiques/comments on this potential build:

Lower - Stag Arms lower w/ DPMS LPK
Stock - pistol buffer tube w/ Adco 9mm buffer
Grip - Magpul MOE
Upper - Adco RRA/DD 9mm Custom Railed Upper w/ 7" bbl and Daniel Defense Lite-7 quad rail
Bolt - Adco ramped bolt
Mag Block - Adco/RRA 9mm mag block
Charging Handle - BCM Gunfigher Mod4 Medium
Flash Hider - YHM Phantom 5SC 1/2x36

Thanks.  Rich

Having some problems guys seeing if you can help. I've got a dedicated 9mm upper with a tros 5.5 in barell. The breech is so tight that rounds don't want to come out. Just now it ripped the case out but left the bullet in the breech. Below are some pics. Any help would be awesome

This is where hand fed rounds decide they've gone far enough

Store bought factory ammo, correct ?

Round should drop in freely by hand and fall out when barrel turned chamber end down..  In the pic, the bevel into chamber looks rather generous too.

Probably a reamer was not up to par used to cut chamber..

Have you tried different ammo other than the flavor seen in the pic ??

Sure have, rounds don't go in far enough and don't drop out freely. Chamber is in pristine shape too

Update, just read on the tros website that the chamber is supposed to be tighter in order to provide more stabilization because of how short the barrel is. Guess it's normal

No.  It isn't...

Chamber should be cut to SAAMI specs so that ammo that adheres to the same standard will work in it without issue.

Either your barrel, ammo, or both, are out of spec.

So I've been running the Colt pattern for over a decade on my M16.  I had a 635 upper that I later sold because I built a sexy flat top with a custom 5" barrel and a DD M4 tube, with an older AAC Phantom suppressor - looks like an SD model as the can goes back in the tube quite a ways.  I've been using a ramped Colt bolt and the no-longer-made Crossfire blocks (chrome plated steel) with old Colt factory mags with metal followers.

My buddy just picked up a slightly used RRA 9mm flat top receiver with a 16" RRA 9mm barrel.  He does not yet have a bolt, magwell blocks, or mags.  So we put my ramped Colt bolt in his upper, and a Colt brand 9mm buffer in his lower.  I believe his LPK is standard Rock River but it might be J&T - but it's a regular semi-auto hammer.

This combination of ramped Colt bolt and semi-auto AR15 hammer results in one shot fired, live round in chamber, hammer down.  We tried several different buffers - H2, Colt 9mm, MGI Heavy, AAC rate reducer - all with the same results.  We also tried several known good carbine buffer springs including the one from my 9mm sear gun in his semi-auto lower.  So it is not a buffer or spring issue.

We also tried three varieties of 115gr FMJ ammo - Speer, Remington (I know...), and my handloads that are pretty hot and I have been using for years in my 9mm M16.  All ammo types give the same malfunction - one shot then hammer down on live round in the chamber.

We then put his upper on my sear gun lower (M16 hammer) and everything works fine.

So it must be the notch on his semi-auto hammer - the bolt does not go back far enough/does not push the hammer back/down far enough to engage the disconnector, so the hammer follows the bolt forward and you get the live round in the chamber with the hammer down.  Manually charging the weapon by either pulling the bolt fully back or locking the bolt back and releasing both result in a cocked hammer.  Semi-auto trigger group passes function test and works on .223 upper.

So my experience is somewhat different from what others have posted regarding the combination of a ramped bolt and a semi-auto hammer and that is the reason for my post here - to share my experience.

The solution for us is to grind the sear engagement notch off of an M16 hammer and use that.  I'll report back on that next week.

I have a colt 9mm AR im thinking about selling.  Its a pre-ban, blue label, unfired and with the original sealed manual & 2 mags, kit, box, etc.  it has the pin sear block in it above "fire", but colt confirms it is pre-ban.  what would it be worth fairly?  is $1300 unreasonable?  thanks guys.

Hey all, I'm in the process of putting together a dedicated 9mm pistol build, using original Colt SMG parts (upper, 2-piece magazine well adapter). Does anyone have a drawing of the locations for the roll pins? I've got the measurements made as best I can, I just wanted to double check before I go drilling into my receiver.

Thanks!

Hello, to all, quick question and I hope that I am not being redundant. Are there any difference between OLY Barrels vs RRA/COLT Barrels. My concerns are as I collect parts for the build can I use any barrel for either system, or do I need to chose which system I want to use when In start with a barreel. TY Mark
4/10/2011 2:25:54 PM EDT
[#27]
You will either build on the Oly system,,,,  or you will build on the COLT system.. both are different as far as barrel chamber positions, bolts, mag position in the mag well.

Thank You for the information, now if I find a new or used barrel I know to ask if it is for OLY or Colt/RRA. I was going to guess this was the answer but wanted to here it from someone who knows. TY Mark

I asked this in Armory, but figured I'd ask here too...

I'm new to 9mm uppers and I have quick question or two, I got a 9mm upper in a trade and it was supposed to be a RRA, but there are no marking on the upper, mag well or bbl. Does/has RRA always marked their 9mm uppers with their logo, initials or T-marks? How does one identify the maker of an upper? Also, the shell deflector is loose, it wobbles back and forth from the receiver, is that normal?

Thx for the help.

Haven't heard of needing to shorten the spring. Try pulling the spring out, closing the upper, and working the action to see if it's binding anywhere. Point the muzzle down so the bolt will close. What ammo are you using? I've gotten ahold of some pretty light 9mm from... crap, who was that... Fiocchi I think it was.

I am starting to think my bolt is not ramped; everything is free until the bolt makes contact with the trigger then it gets snug. i have the standard ar trigger. everything else looks good and moves free, i can push the bolt past the trigger with my fingers, but in order to get the bolt out of buffer tube you have to bump the rifle against the floor and it will slide off bolt,

Trigger is std across the board..

best move for now is the hammer seen in the top pic.. Order from DPMS as LR-33 ?? ,, or grab ahold of M16 hammer and cut the lug off (same difference).  Then as you gather cash, have bolt ramped to mimmick a std 556 carrier.

Hiya, 9mm Frequently-Asked-Questioneers.

I flipped through the pistol caliber threads, and through this FAQ and I didn't see anything directly pertaining to this, so I thought this would be the best place to ask.

On 44mag.com, they have the Cproducts 9mm magazines for sale, but they say specifically that they're not recommended for use in RRA rifles. Why is this?

Furthermore, does "RRA rifles" just mean those dedicated RRA lowers with the built-in 9mm magwell, or do they mean any rifle with a major RRA component, like a mag block or an upper or what-have you?

OK

I got the Hahn precision mag block for my Oly system.  This uses the standard Sten magazines.  The mags seem to vary as far as the size of the stop.  I had to hammer a couple of them so they would go in far enough to engage the catch.  Now one of them can go too far.  I was wondering if this will still work as the mag will stop on the bolt.  I might have to come up with a clever way to attach a stop to the mags.  I don't like the way the mags stop against the bevel on the magwell.  This seems like it's going to wear the hell out of my lower.  Does anybody run this setup?  What are your results?

I use a KKF magblock with Stens and I was having the same issue when the gun was new to me. Some of the mags would seat. Others would not. The magwell is chewed up a little bit from the few mags that wouldn't.

The metal at the stop on the mags is thin. Holding them in the off hand, you can hammer it flat.

Since the bolt doesn't lock back on an empty mag, reload with the bolt forward so the mag overtravel is a moot issue.

Hi I am new to this forum and a new AR owner. I bought a SIG 516 which is a piston drive system AR. What I would like to do is also have a 9mm AR.

First, I am wondering if it is possible to just put a OLY upper and mag on my 516 and be done without any mods and be able to switch back & forth to my SIG upper at will.

I need to know if this is possible before I even venture on to any further questions. Thanks.
6/16/2011 9:02:23 PM EDT
[#46]
yes, no mods necessary.  You will need to use OLY mags unless you use a mag block then you can use unmodified STEN mags.

OK that is great news. The only thing that had me concerned was this on the SIG website about their piston 516 uppers:

"All upper assemblies are shipped with a SIG516 hammer and trigger pivot pin, a recoil buffer and action spring. These components must be installed to ensure proper function of the SIG516 upper assembly on your AR-type lower receiver."

My next question is about the LWD AR 9mm upper. It comes decked out with a nice free float quad rail hand guard. It looks more like the one that is on my SIG 516 and it is also included in the price of $650. The OLY upper, you have to add the FIRSH Quad rail ($128) plus the gas block front site ($50) which puts it at about $900 and IMO does not look as nice. Has anyone tried to use the LWD upper with OLY mags? If so, did you get reliable functionality?

I have called both companies and they said "it should work" but I was hoping to get confirmation from someone out there. Also any opinions on the LWD AR 9mm uppers in general. I have read they are based off the OLY uppers so if they are just as good, it seems you get much more bang for the buck. Thanks.

Don't know abut sig specifics. That is new to me. If the lower is standard then the Olympic will work.

I have the LWD upper and it is very nice. Bolt is properly beveled for standard AR hammer and mine runs flawless with my RRA 2 stage match trigger set ups. I have no experience with the OLY mags on it because I'm still waiting on my LWD lower so I can run Glock factory mags. By the way, that float tube is made by UTG and they are very cheap to buy brand new. They are the lightest float tube I ever seen and quite strong. I had to disassemble mine COMPLETELY because whatever gunk they used to lock the threads for alignment of the top rail came loose after about 15 rounds. I cleaned up all the threads and used 271-RED thread lock on the alignment sections and after that cured overnight it is solid as a rock. They only retail for about 79.00. Well worth that.

I've got my 308 AR's, I've got my .223 AR's, and I've got my .22 AR.
Now I think I'd like to have a 9mm version.  I work with / at an SOT/7
manufacturer of suppressors / NFA goodness on occasion, which means I
can stick my uppers on their post-sample receivers to "play".  As a
matter of fact, shooting their MP5SD is what made me decide I'd like to
have a 9mm AR.  As such, I like to pick components that would be useful
for usage in full auto and suppressed.

I'm just starting to look into a 9mm AR.  It seems that 9mm AR land makes 308 AR land look standardized!
Where is a good place to start in order to build a short-barreled, 9mm
AR suppressor host that may also spend quality time on top of a
registered or post-sample receiver?
