Just projectiles, didn't come with cases. So no head stamps. Don't know which ones are USSR or China.
Armor piercing Incendiary on the left, Armor piercing Incendiary Tracer on the right. That is black over purple tip, supposed to have different incendiary compound that burns hotter than the normal black over red. wolfganggross

| From what I can remember from back in my days of collecting this stuff, I never ran across any 7.62x54R APIT, not saying it does not exist, but no reference to it's existence from the books I had. Also, the 3rd ctg from the left is strange, with the multiple cannelures or cuts into the body. All I ever saw were like the ones on the left. Interesting to say the least... |

Don't feel so bad, had to look up the info for myself, from some of the so called "experts" who are really just some guys that really like this crap!.
This is what I do know on the 7.62x54r: From Russian ammunition data tables the API B32 (m1932), black tipped with red beneath (That's the first projectile) API BS40 (1940), bullet and case mouth red, black tipped bullet and black case head APT BT, purple tipped bullet APIT BZT, Purple tipped with red band underneath All the APIT was for the ShKAS machine gun, made from 1939-45, factories 17 and 46, copper washed steal cases The Chinese , being communists, were supplied with Russian weapons. They had there own ammunition factories that made 3 different API between 1956-61. On brass and CWS cases. They have been a little more tight lipped about what they have or have done. 71/66 with a two piece API bullet, (similar to the 7.62x39 API but longer) 71/ 67 red/ black tip 71/67 new color code, black tip And could also be Czechoslovakia API, BXN/ 62-64 Like I said earlier, because no cases, no clue to what they are. Yes, the APIT are legit. Only have seen them WWII and earlier and only from the USSR.The extra cannelures are there to reduce the bearing surface on those loooong projectiles... and to give the jacket somewhere to flow into since there is no soft lead under the jacket to allow any "give". Similar to what we see nowadays on some of the solid copper projectiles out there. Have seen them with and without the extra cannelures, not sure which one came first or if there was a designation change or if it was an "improved" version. IIRC the alternate incendiary filler was Thermite...
