Took the x40mm WT plunge the other day, the barrel and die kit arrived yesterday...took a look at the barrel and all was good w/ the exception of some odd black spots near
the muzzle (seemed like something acidic, maybe phosphates/bluing salts?) the rest of the barrel was pretty much perfect. I was kinda disapointed that it made it through QC w/o anyone noticing...Oh well...I will try to see If I can get it removed w/o hurting the nice sandblasted finish... BTW it is a Mid Weight, 20" SS Tactical/Recon Bbl. (Match Grade) w/ a 1:12 Twist, Target Crown, with a Middy Gas System. Pics to follow... |

I would send wilson an email or call them about those marks on the barrel, looks like some sort of corrosion.
they may have another barrel and swap ya. Originally Posted By Dr69er:

Vic, Welcome to the x40 club you will love it. in for the pics of the gun and your first target Thanks Bruce, Don't know yet how I'm going to go with this one since by budget is really tight...will likely go (high quality) but basic, free float tube, adj. s.s. low pro gas block, forged m4 flattop, magpul MBUS sights, ergo grips, CMC trigger, etc. In the end it all adds up though... http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx65/Doc69er/IMAG0073_zpsa1ceb012.jpg http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx65/Doc69er/IMAG0071_zpsc9ed0733.jpg http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx65/Doc69er/IMAG0072_zpsd40ed83d.jpg |

Where does one purchase these? ETA: It does show it in the graphic but not on the pick list that allows a purchase. |

I received a notification from Midway that they had arrived. I can't wait to load and see how they perform on hogs.
Luckily they look to still be in-stock: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/941127/nosler-accubond-bullets-30-caliber-308-diameter-125-grain-spitzer-boat-tail-box-of-50 |

Here's the result of the first test loads for my 40 WhiskeyTango and had the big suprise of recovering some bullets.
Here's a combined pic of performance. 125gr Nosler Accubonds 24.5 AA1680 @ 2.240" http://www.realtree.com/img/2/medium/125Accubond.jpg |

What medium were they fired into? What velocity? What range was the medium? What range was the group on paper? |

16" Wilson LW Stainless
Dirt bank @ approx. 40 yard (furthest distance that I can shoot for now) Estimating 2350ish on velocity - Soon to chrono loads now that I know pressures are OK. I'm really enjoying working on this project. I have taken a few hogs with 125gr Nosler BTs and love Accubonds for their tougness. This should make a perfect sub 100 yard load for deer and hogs.... |
|
Here's a 125gr Ballistic Tip after encountering a head shot on a smallish pig around 25 yards. Recovered from the base of the skull/neck area....

Anyone have any recommendations/experience with building a bolt gun in 7.62X40WT?
I am leaning towards a Savage M25 Walking Varminter CAmo as a base gun, but unsure of what is required to re-barrel or rework the .223 Remington barrel to 7.62 Any suggestions greatly appreciated.... |

Would probably cost more than a new barrel considering you would have to stress relieve the barrel with an oven after cutting. Considering it may have been stress relieved once before or after original rifling was cut, you could run into problems. There are a few barrel makers out there for savage model 10s and remington 700 actions that are priced considerably well. I will post a few once I find them in my notes. http://www.douglasbarrels.net/chamberings/ http://www.bullberry.com/bolt_action_barrels.html It doesnt hurt to call and ask either |

Thanks for the advise.... I also have a Savage 10 .308 barrel that may be a good starting point if I could find a 7.62X40WT reamer and have the barrel cut down and re-chambered.
It would make for a fast switch barrel rifle.... so many project ideas LOL I really like the idea of the micro sized receivers for the project to keep the weight and size down to minimum..... |

It would be blasphemy like a chevy engine in a mustang, but different. |

Just built mine an working on loads for it. Ii have SMK 135gn loaded at 21gn of IMR 4227 anything less and would not eject all of them. At this powder level the bullet is compressing the powder. Is this ok?

Hi , I'm new here and just bought 16" mid gas barrel. Since 1680 is almost impossible to find, I have H110 and 4227 with 110, 130, and 150gr pills on hand.
Does anybody have any pet loads for the mid gas that work reliably? Will the 150's cycle better? should I save the 110's until I get 1680? Has anybody tried a Noveske KX3 with the faster powders? I'm not looking to squeeze all the velocity I can out, just something to reliable feed for paper punching/ pest control around 100y without sacrificing accuracy. |

A while back Bill Wilson mentioned (I believe in this thread) that H110 and W296 were the same. I don't know that for sure so I would recommend that you verify that information, but I have load data with 296 from a 16" mid gas barrel that may be helpful. When I get home I'll try to remember to post it. It is buried in this thread somewhere but not sure where. I've had very good luck with W296 and 110gr projectiles so I see no reason to wait for 1680. ETA: On page 23 I have some load data for W296. In my 16" mid gas barrel 22 grains of W296 took the 110gr V-Max to 2550fps and 21 grains of W296 took the 125 Nosler BT to 2400fps. Page 29 of this thread is where Bill said he confirmed that H110 and W296 are the same powder. As always, if you use that information start low and work up slow. |

I'm excited. Building it of hunting those little black-tailed deer of Western Oregon. I'd take it into CA for some pig hunting but I'm afraid that they might not like the configuration of my "hunting rifle" down there.
Barrel on the way. Build to start shortly. I think I'll just re-do one of my .223 uppers and slip this bbl in. On the search now for dies. I bought the little Harbor Freight mini-chop saw / tube cutter yesterday to trim brass. Pic's to follow.... Bill in OR |

My 7.62x40 Wilson Bbl is on the way. I have a new receiver and the upper build parts also on the way. I ordered the 18" Medium Contour. I have several 1000 125 Nosler Ballistic Tips under the bench...but I'm low on powder. I have some 4227 but almost all the reloading sites show 1680 as THE primary powder....can anyone suggest other choices in these lean time of finding powders??

Great data...thanks!
A local gun shop has 500 123 FMJ bullets in stock. They look like pulled Mil. Normally I would expect these type of bullets to be .310 /.311, but these mic out at .3085. If I can get the price down cheap enough I think I'll take them all, but, before I do I'll take along a magnet and check the jacket composition as I can't use gilded metal for my 3-gun events. Would these bother any of you guys? Bill in OR |

Put the loaded round in the shell holder, push it up into the die far enough for the case mouth to go just inside the collet, tighten the handle, loosen it, retract and check your work.... |
|
The rounds I crimped with the 300 FCD put the crimp about halfway down the neck, I'm not sure if thats a problem, I guess the worst is the case breaks there. I made a adapter to test tonight, it will work for the single stage, it slips on the shell holder and has two tabs to keep it from rotating. I'm thinking I can make a similar version that attaches to the bottom of the die for the Dillion press. There is enough room on the collet to put dimples on a collar and snap it on.
