I tried it. I suck. I only had one color one, so here it was before going down range. Here we have the battle of the two ends of the spectrum, the sub $300 Franken-AR, aka Trash Panda, (kudos to the Let Every Man Be Armed thread, AR Hank and Backbencher, among a LOT more great people), and the CZ BREN 2, the one and only expensive rifle I own. TP1 wear a simple SIG Romeo5 red dot, the BREN 2 sports an AimPoint PRO red dot. Does it all make a difference... Both rifles are nominally sighted in for 100 yards, however, the BREN 2 was hurriedly sighted in as that day was well over 110 degrees. These groups were shot in a temp of 100 degrees. Also grabbed a bag of reloads to shoot - not blaming the ammo, I made them, and they usually work quite well. Heck we even used the same D&H 30 round aluminum magazine on both rifles. First try with the Trash Panda. I don't think I've put a round downrange with this rifle this year. And this sucks. Will the BREN 2 be better? This is when I realize I started the upper body workouts later than I should, AND the fact that I was just in the hospital two days ago for a suspected heart attack, (it wasn't), showed how freaking weak I've become. Ugh. Let's try that again. Trash Panda; Better group, just still low. BREN 2 OH WOW. Now, in my defense, I was standing in direct sunlight, the temp had gone up probably 10 degrees since we arrived, etc., (insert random whiney excuses here), and the curvature of the Earth was all wonky-doo, so it's not my fault! Actually, I was already tired from holding a rifle up, no sling used as requested, and that little escapade at the hospital took a lot more out of me than I thought. So, I will try this again, sometime later, after I see the cardiologist next week. But I did get the wife to try the Trash Panda and the BREN 2. See, I even include a pic for the "rulez"! No pic with the BREN 2, but she definately liked the BREN trigger MUCH better. So, money doesn't make you shoot better - YOU make you shoot better, and right now I need to make ME shoot better...

Hitting them with an M1 Garand of .303 British is a hoot.

View Quote I won’t be able to test it out with a grapefruit for a few weeks, but I shot this with a 4x ACOG a couple weeks back from 300 yards, prone unsupported. The grid is 1 MOA squares, so just over a 2 MOA group.

My great uncle would shoot apples off the tree with his 270 to get tuned up for elk season. My dad would freehand squirrel heads out to about 75 yards with his 22 regularly Unfortunately I did not inherit that gene.

Shot today, cold, first 10 rounds of the day. LWRC w/ 4x LED ACOG, Wilson ETU single stage trigger. I'm doing these a little different - not going for groups, but rather assessing my ability to quickly hit the target with the first shot, in the spirit of the original 'balloon test.' Low ready - rifle up - bang as quick as I can - rifle down - repeat on next target. Total of 2 sets of 1-2-3-4-5. Sadly, I missed the most important target - Target 1 - on both runs. But targets 2-5 were hit on both runs.

people are not impressed with offhand real life shooting as they are with benchrest bullshit accuracy anyway...

going to a few IDPA shoots really showed how difficult in a simulated high stress environment it can be to engage targets rapidly and accurately...

balloon shoots or even swinging metal targets are crazy... as the balloons/targets sway it is very hard to keep focused on your front sight and very easy to spend an entire magazine...


Bench shooting has its own interesting rewards for sure but it is a god damned trap that many never get out of.  

It’s August, if you’re a hunter by now you should be practicing your field shooting.  Even if it’s with a .22 for cost.  

I speak to myself as well.   I have been bench and bipod shooting a pair of precision .22s mostly this summer, it’s fun but it’s time to brush up on field shooting. Off hand, sitting, kneeling, etc.  

Time to warm up with the bow too if you haven’t started you’re late!

I finally got out and tried the challenge today. Rifle is a 20" White Oaks upper with iron sights and a Rock River National Match lower. Reloads were made with CC1 41 primers, Sierra 69 gr match king bullets and 23.5 gr of Reloader 15. I shot a total of 6 targets.  The black circle is 4.8" in diameter.  20 shots on each of the first 4.  I figured once I had a miss that I might as well keep practicing. Target 1 has my first two shots labelled.  On target 6, the one round outside the black to the left happened in the last 4 shots.  You can only load 6 rounds at the state range I was using so I loaded magazines with 6 and 4 rounds. I finally did it right. Used the Baby Bren with SIG Romeo5 red dot. First try, cold gun. Whoa, must be a fluke, tried again, same load, a 55gr Hornady Spire Point. Nope, not a fluke, this thing rocks!

I have a 6in steel plate and at 50 it’s no big deal.  In all fairness I get to shoot at home quite and often.  I’ve set it at 100 yards and it’s definitely much more challenging.     With a scope at 4x not to bad.  With my eotech so-so With a Aimpoint not so great

50yd today with the AUG, standing, using the 3X Donut-crosshair reticle. Scored 9/10 (single shot to torso is flyer from another drill).

First try was 8/10.  This was my 2nd.  I did loop my arm through the sling. It's a 10.5" PSA Premium on my Anderson SBR lower with Romeo 5 optic.

Well this thread is…interesting.  The target below is with my CMMG Banshee in 9mm with a Holosun 510, firing 10 shots at a 15 yard target offhand as fast as I could acquire a good sight picture.  Yes, it is my best target, but it would meet the hit-a-grape fruit at 50 yards parameter. .

Tried my hand at this.  first group was the razor core followed by the AAC 77g OTM.  This was pretty humbling but also as much as I struggled while I was shooting I was surprised and impressed by my results for the first time trying something like this. Rifle is a 12.5" Centurion 4150 barrel, Geissele MK16 rail and a Triggertech Competitive 2 stage.  Optic is a Vortex Ranger 1-4 in an Aero ultralight mount.  Fairly basic build and I shot it with a YHM resonator K with a Rearden mount.  Also I promise the smiley face wasn't intentional lol.

Well I made it to the range today the weather was excellent, a little windy but enjoyable. 6" targets @ 50 yds offhand  the rifle was  originally a S&W M&P 15 , its had a few different  barrels on it but now it has a Spikes tactical 14.5 ELW  CL 5.56 barrel. The ammo is off the shelf Fed AE 55 gr 223 FMJBT. my favorite plinking ammo. Optic is a PA Nova 1x6  trigger is a RRA 3.5 lb Varmint 2 stage I did much better than my last attempt at 50 yds offhand. View Quote Fill them about half to 2/3 full, don’t freeze them but cap them, and shoot them in the bottom quarter.  Done with a friend alternating shooting, highest water rocket wins.  Also works Gatorade bottles.

Shot the AUG today, using the A3 SF 3x scope with piggy back PA Arms micro dot. Target on the left is with the 3x, right is with the RDS. Both are B8 25yd pistol targets, blue is 5.5". I had forgotten this was a 10rd test, so both were shot with 5rd each.
