So move, and you can have one too.

Do you have to mount it so clos to the delta ring?  What are your forward mounting options on an MOE handguard?

You can mount it anywhere it will fit.  Most people like it toward the d-ring, it''s our of the support hand's way, weapon hangs well slung, etc, etc.
Experiment though, what works for you is what's best.

I got mine today, replaced the earlier two bolt little nub version I can't remember the name of.  I like the lo-profile much better, service, shipping, packaging, all was
typical IWC goodness.

FYI, replacing the earlier style, if like me you didn't use it in a slot as it was intended, but drilled two holes, you can just enlarge one hole to .5 inch
and have one leftover.  I'm a function over form kinda guy, so a small spare hole and a few bucks left in my pocket works for me.

And now I have a spare QD socket, so I think I have to build another gun around it.

Anyplace there is room. On a carbine length handguard, that's about the only place. They do make a surface mount that you can put anywere over a slot.

Do you feel confident that the mount and MOE handgaurds can hold up to abuse?

I like the idea of this product the am a little concerned about the rifle getting yanked around by sling and how the MOEs will hold up.

There are really two questions here.

1) Yes, the MOE's can take abuse. Watch any of the Magpul DVD's and see what they do to them in class. Also I know that MP did extensive testing on them before they were released. They're tough enough for you. And if properly installed, I can't see the MNS mount getting ripped out of the polymer. In transition drills I've dropped my gun on the sling and have not noticed any adverse effects.

2) The sling yanking on the handguards. This is no different then any other drop in handguard that has a sling mount. It all depends on the quality of the hand guard, and the installation and or strength of your delta ring and delta ring spring. If they are good to go, then you're okay. I have yet to see or hear of anyone ripping the hand guards off a gun. If the gun is hanging on the sling muzzle down, then the hand gaurds are being pulled back into the delta ring, not out of it. I suppose over time your delta ring spring may get weaker.

On another note, consider this. If you use one of the IWC 2to1 triglides, you can make your two point sling into a one point sling. When the need arises, and you're really throwing the gun around, you can transition to single point mode and then there is no sling stress on the handguards at all.

Would it be possible to use a current slot and just round out the hole a little? I realize that the inside of the mount would have to be attached vertically. I was just curious if that would work on a middy handguard.

It would be easier an to drill on the flat after the last slot. Try running a drill in a preexisting hole, I promise you it will result in burrs and a ragged deal. You wont be able to hold the bit on center. The split ring on top will also work better having a complete smooth surface to lie on. I bet its also stronger. The MOE material is surprisingly tough. I used a forstner type bit and thought I had  a POS bit. Its like scraping a hole in rock. Be patient, apply even pressure and you'll have a nice perfect hole.

The hard part is getting that darn split ring retainer on.

If you want almost the same thing, but you don't want to drill, try this.

Also an IWC product. You just drop it on, and put the screws through the slot. The down side is a little added bulk.

Link

This will also work on a middy, just know that the mount will be further forward if you do this. One of the advantages to the drilled in mount, is placement further to the rear.

Installed on the WartHog. Clean, low profile, practical, tough  and tacticool to boot. IWC is one of my fav companies. I have the corresponding light mount also from them. Not installed yet.

I actually thought I damaged the split ring when I was installing it. Its all good and way stronger than it appears. Rotation limited keeps sling from tangling about.
Paired with Gear Sector QD swivels(Josh is the man also!), and a Stark QD grip for the rear. Works perfect for me.

Here is some verification for you. I just ran my middy, as pictured, through a five day patrol rifle instructor course. The course was fairly dynmaic. Not once did I have any issues with the thing. But, a lot of people in the class didn't have the luxury of being able to switch from one to two point, or adjust the length on the fly. They are now rethinking their slings. I had to leave before they stole mine.

nyjetsfanwex, that install looks awesome! Thanks for posting this pic. IWC had a SCAR for R&D but we sold it before tge QD Micro came out. I always thought it would work in that location in the stock, and spoke with a fee customers with SCAR's who said they installed them, but never saw one until you posted.

I would like to post your pic on our product page on IWC's site. Would you please send me a high red pic so we can post it? Email: [email protected]. We will give you credit.

Thanks!

Sorry I didn't see this earlier - I haven't logged in for weeks.  Life's been busy.

I have no reservations that both the MOE handguards and the IWC mount will hold up to anything that won't also destroy the AR.  If I had some extra money I'd mount one of the QDs in a spare MOE and torture test it with cinderblocks on a rope or something, but even a static test like that won't tell you much.

I have no doubts the mount design will hold up just fine. I do find myself wondering how well the hand guard will though,  considering the way it is only held in by spring pressure. I have standard hand guards on my middy and they have some side to side play, can any vouch for how tight the MOE locks in?  Seems the twisting from the sling would make any play pretty noticeable?  Thank's

Thank's, guess I am just a little bit of a pessimist when it comes to these sort of things. I am running the front side sling swivel with standard hand guards now, but don't really care for the sling mounted this far forward. I may consider going this route with the MOE though, just had a few concerns with it being a 2 piece design & all the force from the sling just on the top half. Seems Magpul would have made the two halves bolt together some how?

Why? It's added weight with no benefit what so ever.

All my Magpul stuff seems like it fits the "KISS" mantra and I like that.

The benefit would be that it would be virtually impossible for the top half to come out if it was secured to the bottom, especially from the stress of a sling?  Not trying to argue, just my thoughts.

I have a MOE handguard on my AR10 with the Mount-N-Slot sling mount. An AR10 is quite a bit
heavier than most AR15 setups and I have no concern about the handguard coming loose. I think
it would break before it would come out from behind the delta ring and I don't have any concerns
about them breaking either, these things are tough as heck. I'll post a pic of it in a few days. I used
the mount that mounts into one of the slots in the handguard, not the mount that you drill a hole for.
Love the whole setup.

Not a bad idea - the polymer that Magpul uses is really tough, you can drill it like I did but a mill would make it easier.  I had several handguards to do, so the cost of the bit wasn't that bad.

thanks for the detailed how-to on the IWC QD Micro. I ended up using a soldering iron to make the setscrew dimples instead of the 1/8 drill bit because of the angle....overall it took me less than an hour start to finish

I've been a big fan of the IWC mounts since they were introduced.  I have used them successfully in all sorts of applications, most notibly the SCAR Mk16 stock.  I have probably installed about 6 of these on M4 style handguards, as pictured below.  For those of you running a standard handguard, whether A2, CAR, M4, or Middy...they work equally well.  The only modification needed will be to trim the aluminum heatshield back slightly to allow for clearance of the IWC socket base.

would probably work but the fostner bit will be much much cleaner. Look around my local hardware store had a lower priced brand (Irwin or Erwin) that worked just fine. With all due respect, mark my words, I doubt that you will be only ever installl one.

If you install the QD Micro in the usual spot on a carbine length MOE handguard, can you still install a Magpul MSA sling attachment in that back slot with the QD micro taking up part of it?
