Great pics, thanks!  Looks workable.  Does it require an adjustment of cheek weld compared with say a NF in an LT104?  Which I guess is standard height above bore. . . .

Yes, very slightly head down in comparison.

I didn't think the Billet uppers were available with the ramps cut into them.  I had asked about this, in case I found a barrel that I liked that had the ramps.

How well does the GGG T1 mount hold its zero when removed and reinstalled?  Also, how does "Mama" handle?  Is its weight manageable?

I generally put an optic on a weapon and then shoot said weapon as configured it until such time as I decide to change out the optic.  In other words I haven't done any on, off, on, off, comparisons.

Mama weighs 10 pounds 8 ounces with an A2 stocked lower.  Add 14 ounces for the PRS stocked lower in the picture.  I hope to get her out to the range this weekend.

I took Mama LaRue to the range today to zero the BUIS at 50 yards for an Improved Battlesight Zero.  I turned in the 10-shot group pictured below; which is about as good as I can shoot with the standard size post and aperture of the AR-15 iron sights.

Larue dosen't make them to sell on his own site, but manufacturs Billet uppers with M4 cuts for select dealers, like Bravocompanyusa.com.  I know this, because I have a NIB one in my possesion from a build that I have canceled

Has "mama" had enough rounds through to get a sense of its capacity for accuracy?  I know there is disagreement about break-in procedure, but regardless of how one goes about it, I have found a barrel will tighten up groups somewhere between 50 and 150 rounds.

I usually put 200 rounds through a new barrel before I do any serious accuracy testing with it.

More Tidbits.

The sight radius of the KAC back-up iron sights on the the LaRue 13.2" handguard is approximately 18.5".  The sight radius of a standard 20" AR-15A2 upper is approximately 20".

While rough zeroing the scope to be used for accuracy testing on Mama LaRue, she turned in the sub-MOA 10-shot group pictured below at a distance of 50 yards (in 40 mph winds).  This is about what I would expect from a barrel that has a chamber designed to handle heavy OTM NATO pressure loads fired on full-auto.  Formal accuracy testing for Mama LaRue from 100 yards begins soon.

JP Enterprises/Leitner Wise Defense High Performance Bolt

Here’s a little input on the JP/LWD bolt that  I’m currently trialing  in Mama LaRue.  The build has a Noveske barrel, LaRue Tactical upper receiver and a Young Manufacturing bolt carrier.

When firing hand-loads assembled with virgin brass, the rifle functions flawlessly.  Whenever I fire hand-loads assembled using River Valley Ordnance once-fired Lake City brass, I can’t fire 5 rounds in a row without a malfunction and it’s always the same malfunction. Some people refer to it as a “double feed”, but that doesn’t quite accurately describe what is happening.  Pics of the actual malfunction are shown below.

Here’s what is actually happening.  Round number one fires normally and as the bolt is driven back by the direct impingement operating system the case is extracted from the chamber, however, the spent case fails to eject.  As the bolt completes its rearward motion and begins to return to battery it starts to strip round number two from the magazine.  Since the spent case of round number one is still seated in the bolt, round number two cannot feed properly.  Round number two and the spent case from round number one are both jammed into the barrel extension and the action comes to a grinding halt.

I have never experienced this problem previously when using RVO Lake City brass in any of my other AR-15s.  The overwhelming majority of those AR-15s have Colt bolts in them.  So, I swapped out the JP/LWD bolt for a Colt bolt in my custom build; the malfunctions immediately ceased to occur.

After taking a few comparative measurements between the JP/LWD bolt and a Colt bolt, the cause of the malfunctions became apparent.  The inside diameter of the bolt-face on the JP/LWD bolt is approximately 0.006” smaller than that of the Colt bolt.   Just something to keep in mind depending on the type of build you might be considering using one of the JP/LWD bolts for.

I took Baby LaRue to the range today to get her Aimpoint Micro T-1 sighted-in for an Improved Battlesight Zero.  Using 55 grain “ball” ammunition to get her “on paper” at 50 yards, she turned in this tidy 10-shot group.

Accuracy testing of Mama LaRue at 100 yards is going  well.  Using hand-loaded Sierra 55 grain BlitzKings, she turned in a 10-shot group with an extreme spread of 0.726".  That’s not too shabby for an AR-15 with a barrel that has a chamber that “was developed to fire MK262 Mod 1 on AUTO in hot environments."  For the Internet Commandos in our viewing audience, I also fired a 3-shot group at 100 yards. It had an extreme spread of 0.175”

Just for kicks, I ran some 40 grain V-MAX rounds through Mama LaRue from 100 yards.  You may recall that Mama LaRue has a 20” Noveske barrel with a 1:7” twist rate.  The Internet Commando has told us that all manner of mayhem will ensue when firing such short and light weight bullets through a barrel with a 1:7” twist.

The I.C. has said that the 40 grain bullets will “tear themselves apart” and disintegrate before our very eyes before ever reaching the target and that even if they don’t disintegrate, they will be grossly “over-stabilized” from the 1:7” twist rate and tumble through the air and off into oblivion once leaving the barrel.

I fired a 7-shot group of hand-loaded 40 grain V-MAXs through Mama LaRue’s 1:7” twist barrel and it was all rather uneventful.  No disintegrating bullets, no tumbling bullets and no horrendous accuracy problems.  In fact, all seven bullets made it to the target at 100 yards and went into a 0.646” group!

If you don't mind me asking have you fired Mama LaRue enough yet to notice if theirs any significant vertical stringing once the barrel gets hot?

Thanks

I haven't noticed any yet, but I haven't done any rapid fire mag dumps yet either.  Most of the shooting so far has been slow and steady during load development.  The 50-shot composite group shown below was compiled from five 10-shot groups fired in a row at 100 yards.  As you can see, it shows a relatively equal distribution of shots.

Something that I’ve noticed while performing accuracy evaluations of more than 30 different AR-15 barrels over the last several years; a truly accurate barrel tends to be accurate with multiple loads, not just a single “pet load.”  Papa LaRue, with its 24” Krieger barrel is a perfect example of this.

So far, Papa Larue has turned in sub ¾ MOA 10-shot groups at 100 yards with six different bullet weights: 52, 55, 62, 69, 75 and 77 grain.

I can make a very specific statement; my Krieger barreled AR-15 is more accurate than my Novekse barreled AR-15.  However, that's exactly as it should be.  My Krieger barrel has a match chamber (which I won't shoot NATO pressure loads with), while my Noveske barrel has the proprietary Noveske chamber that was designed to shoot MK262, on full-auto, in hot environments.

I'm afraid I don't own any Wylde chambered barrels and therefore I'm unable to make a valid comparison.

Molon, are any of your barrels cryo tempered? I am very impressed by the consistency. My range bud has a Larue stealth upper that is also very consistent and accurate. I ask because I noticed a minor improvment in accuracy and a huge improvment in consistency in my SPR that I had the barrel cryoed on. I have seen  a colt and RRA that are more accurate but only the Larue was as consistant.
