I expect my 6.8 barrel any day now, just going to have it reamed to SPCII, I'm fine with the 1 n 10. Since all of my ammo is the Tactical Load (TL) I spoke with LMT and they advised that if I'm shooting that, I need to ream it-with the understanding that I "fully" own it.

You know in the end in regards to other than the profiles offered, LMT may decide to do some light weights down the road, which would be cool for us.

I haven't had any issues with my 16" and 12.5" CL 6.8spc MRP barrels; although one of my buddy's is gonna ream the chambers whenever possible.

Truth is I never shoot them due to ammo pricing...oh and I also have a SCAR CQC now (that was for Trident).

Cheers

Hehe...in total honesty I absolutely love your scar cqc and that is no doubt the one I would buy(not that I could).....that said, that is perhaps the finest scar specimen that a civilian owns to date...be it a scar l or scar h.

I missed the 6.8 boat completely....cannot really understand why it has become relatively popular....might see it go extinct due to the massive AR .308 boom we are experiencing.  I could never justify paying almost as much for the 6.8 loads as a .308 load.

What makes the 6.8 so popular is that it works with the standard AR, which is a lot cheaper and less proprietary. It also really shines ballistically in SBRs. The 6.8 was designed for short bbls, while 5.56 and 7.62 both require compromise to utilize a short bbl.

So can you convert a SR-25/AR-10 barrel to work with the new LMT 308?

10-4.....I really am ignorant basically to the round as I until recently was never going to have my favorite lil shortie the cqb 10.5 d.i. but law changed so perhaps I will change my thoughts on the 6.8....however it makes sense what you said and why I believe what I believed as I love precision based applications within the AR universe...but again I imagine I will change to some degree once the stamp gets back

Free..I see no reason why the same machine work cannot be performed on the mws barrels as the mrp barrels.

If I had to guess I would say the SR25 barrel extension is not long enough for MWS application.

Wow, I totally mis read his question and I would not know about that as I just thought for a dumb reason that the question was will this work be able to be preformed using the MWS instead of the MRP.

Got to run, my shortbus is honking out front...take care guys

Um, so this begs the question - what diameter tube will fit inside the MRP hand guard?  I gots to know if I can make the barrel shorter than the HG and slide my can inside...

I don't think there is a can on the market (.223) that will fit inside the rail.  The dimensions are too tight.  Maybe a .22 can?

+1 ... but might a integrated 9mm barrel / suppressor work?  That would be a cool option for this system... as short and quiet as you could go...

Thinking about a 45acp barrel from Oly... anyone else make a 45acp barrel for AR?  Would plan to use it with a Cav Arms lower that will take grease gun mags with a block.  Not certain I want to do this but thinking out loud... sucks I live in CT otherwise I could SBR  the Cav Arms lower and thread the barrel and get dual use for my HK 45 Tactical can.  I'm trying to avoid adding 9mm to keep my number of calibers down (though I do have a standard SBR / pre-ban lower that would let me go short and add a 9mm can).

Separately, AK ammo is so cheap I might have to get a 7.62x39 barrel done... would pay for it self with savings on several cases.  Any barrel recommendations for 7.62x39?

Thanks

WOW... this has me very interested, but I have a couple of questions. Obviously, the notch is being machined into the extension, but what else is involved? My main concern would be safety with a conversion like this. Seems like I remember several years ago there were issues with standard MRP barrels (from LMT) loosening up, creating head space concerns. LMT had to make some adjustments to the MRP if I remember correctly.

I would love to do a conversion like this as I have a couple of barrels in mind (can anyone say hammer forged) but I would like to know more about the process. OP, if you would rather not post the info, an IM on the specifics would be greatly appreciated. Various barrels standing by...

Thanks!

Actually, this system begs to be exploited... 338 Spectre and 6.8 SPC with just a barrel swap, looking at whether I can do 40 S&W DI and make it my perfect trifecta.  Add a 22 LR shorty and perhaps one more caliber and well, it just makes my chest hair tingle.
It makes some of the NFA things so clean - one SBR is declared .458 SOCOM with a 10.5" barrel.  The other is officially listed as Multi with a 7.5" barrel.  Use the MRP as the top end for that one and only MRP barrels will fit it - that is the dedicated top end for the other SBR.  No "stray" uppers laying about, just one upper with extra barrels that only fit that one upper.  I like it.  Plus it makes for a cool kit in the Pelican case...

Shame that the Trident won't fit inside, but the Passport will....

In total honesty I have seen the moment when somebody "gets it" in terms of the MRP system and its as if a dam breaks.....and mrp config's go flying out everywhere....again I am being serious.  I not only have seen this on 2-3 occasions, I have personally experienced the "MRP Ding".

eta.....did somebody say .40sw, first pistol caliber I would consider running.....wonder what magwell/mags you would need to run it and who makes a barrel for it.  I could get nasty with it once my stamp gets back and can throw a nfa length .40sw in the cqb chassis.

I really wish I had that post of yours to show some folks who are usually over on TOS who just flat out do not " get it" and hate that others seem to get it.  I point this out primarily for the portion in bold, italics and underlined...  I just cannot stomach hearing the " I just take a couple of different uppers with their own dedicated sights and optics and just carry 3-4 in the backpack, its way better than 1 bcg, 3 barrels, and torque wrench thingy...."

I definitely have the bug given that I have a CQB with 5 barrels and and an MWS on the way back from Adco in less than 6 months.  All my MRP stuff is used save for the 12" piston kit I bought directly from LMT.  I was on my way to building a 10+ upper count before I came over to the MRP.  I was aware earlier but threw it out because of proprietary barrels.

I am tempted to sell off my 16" Superior / Lothar  VTAC upper to fund another barrel or two.  The incremental cost of adding a barrel / completely different set up is so reasonable when you consider the alternative.  Guys here end up with 10+ uppers and then go ahead and build out lowers for all of them because in that case the incremental cost of the lower is small relative to what they invested in the uppers.

The MRP is a massive value in comparison.  Like I said a few posts up... i can reasonably think about adding a 7.62x39 barrel and couple of mags because the cost can be saved with a few 1100 round cases of brass cased ammo at $180.  I just hope LMT does not try and quash the current excitement by attempting to stop smiths from adding the groove.  Can't wait to see more posts and confirmation that the non LMT barrels are running well.

I also want to put a 20in in my full length MRP.  I think the gas system would be past the length of the rails, in which case I can use a switch block..

From the SBR/NFA point it is so clean, because I can show that I do not have an SBR upper without a lower and a standard (non NFA) lower all in the same location.  Plus it is just plain "clean" in the Pelican.  Top layer is the rifle in "most used" config, say 6.8 SPC 12" with AimPoint/Magnifier, mags and side arm.  Bottom layer is SBR 338 barrel with mags and suppressor, SBR 40 S&W barrel with mags and suppressor and "ancillary items" such as additional ammo or mags.

And yes, someone said 40 S&W.  For mags, I would likely use the Pps43s and the barrel, well, I have it made already, just need to add the MRP modification.... just never did have a good "home" for it.

Total "DING" moment... now to find the right donor.... I suppose I "need" a .223 barrel, just for ammo commonality....

If you are going the 18-20+ inch route, I suggest the rifle length MRP.  The CQB length is technically a "Mid-length" rail.  Only down side to the rifle length MRP is that you cannot use the LMT piston system and the shortest barrel you could use would be a 12.5.

But I could see some of you may want to place a 6.5 grendel 24 inch barrel in there.  That would be cool to see.

I have the full length MRP, so that is why I want the 20in.  With the gas port at 13 inches, the switch block would sit right past the end of the rails, and make for a very clean look.  Add a full length stock and you got yourself a M16A5 clone.  I say A5 because it is on the MRP platform (plus the switchblock) and therefore the next generation of badness!

If you plan on using a 20" with a standard rifle length gas system, the rifle length MRP will be too long for a switch block or FSB gas block. You would have to use a low profile gas block.

Sweet....that is great to see them do this step and I think they can sell a lot of these DD's if they are drop in.  Companies that are willing to rapidly evolve to meet the demands of the customers are usually the ones who stick around the longest. Props to DBMG for doing that.

Yes.  Get a barrel sent for conversion, a bolt, and mags.

I personally decided on a 300 Whisper over 7.62x39 because it uses reformed 223 brass, standard pmags, and 556 bolts.  You can load 125 grain bullets to AK velocities / performance and up to 240 grain for cycling subsonic rounds.  Ive read the sub sonics are accurate and effective out to 200 yards because they lose proportionally less velocity.  Maintain energy of 357 magnum (at muzzle) at 100 yards.  Have to check if that was super or sub sonic comment.  If you reload 300 Whisper may be the way to go (I load 223 and 308 so have plenty cases and bullets).  If you want to plink cheap Russian ammo then risk the less reliable mags and go with 7.62x39.

I have an LMT MRP that I bought 2005 and just got a 20" brand "X" barrel cut for it last week.  The problem that we encountered was that the gas tube tended to float around too much without the support bridge near the chamber and the gas key on the bolt carrier got chewed up a bit.  The hole in the front of the reciever is much bigger than on regular receiver and allows the gas tube to bounce around.  The problem was solved by machining a peice of steel to fill in the hole just enough that the gas tube doesn't float around so much.  The question that I have is that the conversions that are being done up in Kent WA don't appear to have the support bridge in the pictures that I've seen, how are they keeping the gas tube from bouncing around?  Is it that with a shorter barrel the gas tube doesn't need the support or is the gas tube hole on the newer MRP recievers smaller?

The gas tube support on the MRP has a over size hole, dose not support the tube once its installed. There should be no reason to get gas tube bounce if the gas tube is fitted correctly, lined up in the center of upper.

My gastube was fitted correctly.  It lined up right in the center of the gastube hole in the upper reciever.  The bolt carrier would slide back and forth with no problem.  I noticed that LMT barrels have a support bridge fitted to their barrels, but the outfit up in WA doing the conversions does not.  Is it because I have a 20" barrel with a full legnth gas tube that I had the gastube bounce issue?  It runs 100% now so i'm good to go, but I was just curious if anyone else has had any issues like this with the conversion barrels that have been done?

I understand that but whats the purpose of selling this work already preformed on a new barrel only to have it not be a drop in replacement....by requiring the end user to deal w. GBs and tubes I would think it defeats the purpose of selling pre done barrels.  Just my 2cents.

+1  Just ordered this 300 Fireball / Whisper and on the way to Kent Washington for conversion.  Looking for 308 can recommendations.

Here is the Noveske 10.5" 300 Fireball / Whisper.  It dropped right in but the screw that goes into the groove took some effort to get in the first time.  Perhaps it will be a bit easier with a few removals and installs.  I called Dennis to ask about it and he said that it was made with zero tolerance to avoid issues early conversions had (not his).  Appears to mate perfectly with M4 cuts and 556 bolt locks right into place.  Separately, I am having someone re size my first batch of 500 223 brass into 300 Whisper brass.  Plan to shoot subsonic 175s through my 45 pistol can once I get some loaded up.  Dennis is working on a special order 5/8 x 24 to 16 x 1 LH thread converter for my can.

Edit: brass arrived.  75 grain reload vs. 175 grain dummy round

Thanks!  Will finally have a chance this weekend.  Apparently the new standard is 300 Blackout... still waiting to hear from Noveske if any modification / reaming might be needed or if this chamber is good to go with 300BLK commercial ammo available in Dec/Jan.  Will probably order 300 Blackout dies for reloading.

According to Todd at Noveske you may be good to go...link.  You should take a look at the DeGroat Tactical Mk 12 RECON silencer.  It is setup for 300 whisper and James said it was good to go with the 300 Blackout.  I believe it can only handle the subsonic round since it is designed off his pistol cans.  I have a couple of his 9mm cans and they are very well made and perform great.

Keep us updated on your setup.  I will be nice once we can start seeing factory ammo and then what kinds of hand loads folks are making.

Update... got pinned stock back for MWS and thread adapter from Dennis at DBMG for pistol can.  MRP is in 300BLK mode with 45 pistol can attached for subsonic fun.  Still have not had a chance to shoot the 10.5" Noveske 300BLK because the converted brass I got still need to be sized and have not made decision on dies yet.

I bought some fully prepped brass and tried my Noveske 10.5" 300FB/BLK this past weekend for the first time. Loved it! I tried 6.05-6.1 grains of Red Dot under 175s. Very quiet with and without Nexus III 45 pistol can.  Did not get a chance to shoot without ear pro but looking forward to that... sounded like a 22.  I love that you can get the energy/punch of 45acp so quietly.  Unfortunately, it would not cycle despite SA carrier and standard carbine buffer (do not imagine this would be a problem with soon to be released factory super and subsonic ammo). The chrono results were as follows:

1074 - first shot with Noveske 10.5" FB barrel
1075
1079 - with pistol can
1067 - with pistol can
1099 - with pistol can
1056 - with pistol can

I took all the weight out of one of my carbine buffers and am going to try to get the same load to cycle (Will have to try another powder if it does not work).  This thing is fun to shoot and a great new option for MRP owners.  A number of people have suggested I use a different powder but if I can get this fast powder to cycle my pile of 175s I would prefer to use it given that it is very efficient.  I would also be able to load 45acp with the same powder if I decided to buy a keg.

The gun still would not cycle with Red Dot powder despite taking all weight out of carbine buffer... though it did eject a few cases.  I moved to 7.7 grains of AA#9 under my 175s and back to a standard buffer and that cycled well this morning.  I might bump it up a bit as they chronoed around 950s-960s and was not happy with the 5 shot group at 100 yards.  Following the 300BLK load testing today I swapped to my 18" SS, FA BCG, and H buffer and put another 70 rounds down range.  I still can't get over the versatility of MRP.

18" SS LMT Mid Gas 5.56, use FA carrier and H buffer, perm pws556
16" CL LMT Mid Gas 5.56, use FA carrier and H buffer, A2 hider
14.5" CL LMT Carbine Gas 5.56, use FA carrier and H buffer, perm pws556
14.5" SS LMT Carbine Gas 6.8, use FA carrier and H2/H3 buffer, perm vortex (6.8 bolt & mags)
12.5" CL LMT Mid Piston 5.56, use FA piston carrier and H buffer, A2 hider (have run to over 1000 steel case 2x between cleanings without a failure)
10.5" SS Noveske Pistol Gas 300FB/BLK, use SA carrier and Carbine buffer, 5/8x24 to1x16LH thread adapter, 45 pistol vortex

That is just sick.  Can't wait to get my collection going.  I just got a LMT piston mrp set up this week.  I will be getting a couple of cans to go with it as soon as they make it to my dealer.  RG
