Gents if I can get back over to to the 500 yard range (2.5 hr drive) before weather turns cold, I'll set this up again and also try some different ammo. Maybe I can get the range owner to come down and observe or verify any results - don't know the guy from Adam. I'm as curious as the rest of you about the results. hey i'm not that bad of a shot though, it's on sand bags and nobody's shooting back.
My wife is not a rifle expert (good with pistol) and got 1 hit out of 5 attempts -same rifle/ammo combo with irons and some instruction. I'm wondering now if she might be able to outshoot of couple of people on here, who seemed a little too overly shocked probably that anyone could even hit non-moving bright orange paper at that distance with rest & bags.  If a woman could outshoot you don't feel bad though, I think SGT Sherri Gallagher (a 88M) beat Tubbs 2003 record at Perry 2010 and could kick all of our butts 
This is the wife's target I ripped down from the 500 yd line. POI is circled. She's still talking about it and won't let me reuse the target - yet.

This isn't 25 yards. and never claimed to be best photographer, but I'll work on it. here's the supersize version start to finish on another target from bench at 100 yards using day optic last April; blew the 5 shot group to left with last two rds) and then did a 5 shot on right, was decent (see MOA results below) but not best. ammo is 69 grain bh match. anybody have any trouble seeing the target, the notes, or holes let me know. I could sit here until New Years with a couple of you guys (same bunch from last time) and you'll never accept this, and honestly i wonder if its probably because you can't do it. Maybe I'm wrong, but it has crossed my mind.

This is with 5 MOA ammo. Thats about 26" at 500 yards. Its not the fact that the OP shot that group at 500 yards with open sights. Get in a good, repeatable position with solid cheekweld especially with a low recoiling semi auto and its easy to replicate precision. Its the ammo he was using that kinda has my WTF flying around... Try it at Kaneohe. It aint so easy there. I concentrated like a damn psychic and only got 5/10. I had a very long MOS school so I didnt qual for nearly two years and going from PI to Fleet course sucked. I could call my shots at the island at the 500(like pool not anticipating afterwards). I was aiming center mass, then going for head shots and getting them. That was over a decade ago though. I havent seen any one able to do what this guy was doing on the range. Im a bit suspicious, especially not being from our school of shooting. Ive heard of Rangers and SF learning a bit from Marines on long distance fundamentals, and here this guy is making groups that Carlos Hathcock would rub his chin over. If its legit then Im happy for the guy, but having done this stuff at this distance as part of my job, and seeing the guys who were supposed to be really good at it do it and not achieve such results makes me wonder. Equipment and ammo does play a factor however. We didnt have rifles designed to shoot around MOA(and supposedly half that.....yeah maybe with three shots but not with ten...). Some may have gotten close, but that was luck and not the norm. |

I bought a box of 20 reloads from a fella since they were cheap and I was only 17 at the time I was grateful to get what I could. My buddy who was helping me sight in the rifle was spotting for me and it went like this... 1st shot "about 1" high and 1" right" he replied. 2nd shot "looks to be dead center" 3rd shot "miss.... looks like you pulled" So we let the barrel cool and he shoots his old mini-14 trunk gun for a bit... 2nd round on a new piece of paper goes like this... 1st shot " looks about the same 1" high and right" 2nd shot " dead ringer buddy" 3rd shot " are you getting nervous with these 3rd shots? miss!" I am not a horrible shot and I could not figure out WTF was goin on... So as I am deciding whether or not to use this rifle like a ball bat on a oak tree my buddy says "c'mere and look at this...." The 2nd hole on both targets was a bit darker around the edges and when gauged was slightly larger than the 1st shot was.... My 2nd and 3rd shots at 100yds were cutting the same hole!!!! Now we were packed up and I never tried repeating it, but, fact is I did it... Could I or the rifle do it again? maybe.... but probably not...

Yep, in Basic training we went to a KD range from 300 meters out to 500 meters. We shot with Iron sights. I did ok, 300 meter not too much of a problem, but 500 meter....Well, I did get some rounds on paper. I would like to try again with optics some day

Nice shooting!
I've gone out to 600 yards with a scoped 03'...I only scored 3 hits out of 10 on the rams at that range though, and the commercial 150 grainers didn't have the power to knock down the silhouette, but I did it, and recognize the skill involved. I was proud of myself hitting at that range with an old military rifle and cheap ammo...it taught me that there is much more than the 100 yard bullseye.

| Keep it up Medcpt. I have seen some excellent shooting at long range and what you are showing is great stuff but not impossible by any means. My brother used to hit 12" steel plates at 200 yards with a 8" 44mag Ruger Redhawk with open sights. The guys who witnessed it and some others who were even ab le to do it were amazed. Every one else used to tell him he was full of shit. |

nic that's amazing. you should check this out. 860 yards with AR15 and day optic by guy looks like a devil dog. Not all hits but look at how close the grouping was on hits, last frame hand as a reference.
