Not bad at all!..

It did end up costing me $26 for 2 slings, but I did buy the beefy buckles.

I also did make the 5" web into a 7" web, worked much better.

Uh, MODs???? Can we get a sticky on this please?  Or maybe post the PDF file to the Information/Articles dropdown bar right under the website logo?

Matt, thanks for the "Using the sling" primer... the covert dog was an awesome touch!  Any chance we could con you into doing a PDF of that too?  'Tac Sling.pdf' is on my hard-drive now for when I finally get frustrated with my weird-ass sling rig.  Maybe I'll post pics of it if I ever get around to snapping them and uploading them somewhere.

You can get all the stuff needed to make two of these @ strapworks for under $14. And they have Poly webbing in OD.
Sweet!

ETA: I noticed someone already mentioned strapworks.

just ordered everything for two, with shipping under 23.00 from strapworks.

All my stuff came in today.  Your instructions were excellent, though I concur that a 7" piece of 1.5" makes the job a lot easier.  All told, about 10 minutes to assemble.

I finally have a tac sling for my AR!  Thanks!

thanks a lot, dude! very useful information and pics. I'm going to "build" a few of these for hunting rifles - way more versatile than standard slings. one could also put one of those padded leather sling pads on one for extended carrying.

Great pictures and directions, mine went together easily, good work thanks.

However...

The plastic keepers I got might have been a bit off, because even after pulling and tightening I had the sling come loose twice.  Luckily my foot broke the carbines fall the second time  Maybe the keepers from that web site will be more positive.

ETA  Did you sew any of your ends down?

I built two and one kept coming loose.  Then I noticed that I had the buckle on backwards.  I turned it around and it does not come loose any more.  Thanks for the great instructions...MadDog

I'm getting ready to order the materials I need for 2 slings. Looks like a real easy project. I'm ordering from Strapworks and my question is, what is everybody using for the strapping? Nylon or Polypropylene? Heavyweight or lightweight? Does it even matter? TIA for your responses.
Link Posted: 5/7/2005 6:11:55 AM EDT
[#30]
I used Polypro for a few reasons. ETA ... heavyweight, It's thicker.

PROS:
It dosen't stretch as much.
It retains less moisture.
It's tougher.
It's lighter.
Better color selection.

CONS:
It is somewhat "slicker" than nylon.
Costs a few cents more.

Heres mine

I got all the stuff I used from strapworks.
YMMV

ETA... It's a crappy pic. I used 1.5" for the main sling body, don't look like it though.
AND if you do it like I did, you dont need any sling mounts other than what uncle sam intended.

I did the 7" central strap too and it came out great.  I had some problems with slippage with the 1" stuff so I doubled up the buckles and now they're solid.  I just tried out some bungee cord for the front attachment and it works good, though i think i got it a little long.  I'm also more of the functional vs pretty type so I used electrical tape to smooth out the bungee knots and keep my main strap from flying around because I ended up with it a bit too long.  Thanks again ggllggll!

aargh-  my pics suck.  I took 2 loops of bungee and looped them off, one on each side of the front sling mount.  then I tied them together and have them coming off of the front strap of the sling.

All right-y then! I went and found the necessary items at the local Army Surplus store (Robby's of Mt.Airy) http://www.robbyssales.com/index.htm and met the original proprietor of the establishment. He is a kind old gentleman who I didn't immediately recognize. He noticed me stooping down to look in a display case at a bayonet, and opened it up and retrieved the bayonet for my inspection. We got to discussing the state of our country and it's leadership. The conversation then turned to his serving in a paratroop unit during WW-II. He helped retake the island of Corregidor, after the Japanese overtook our troops, who were then led on the infamous Bataan Death March. He carried an M-1 Carbine.
I introduced myself and asked his name. He told me his name is Robert Robertson (hence Robby's). I shook his hand and thanked him for his service. I felt it a real honor to do so. He and his brother began this business back in 1946. I just thought this was an interesting occurrence that some would like to hear. I wish I could've purchased the bayonet, but I just wasn't sure it was the right one to fit my AR. I think it had M-6 stamped on the scabbard.
Anyhow, I got the items, but did a couple of things just a bit differently. Instead of using scissors and a lighter to seal the end of the strap cuts, I took an old knife and my mapp torch and heated the knife blade and used it to make the necessary cuts. It stinks up the house, but not nothing too bad. I wouldn't recommend huffing the smoke the cuts make though! The only other thing I did differently was to actually stitch the 5" strap with the male/female buckle ends. I was forced to do this because of the buckle's construction around the loop area. It looks pretty good though. I need to trim some of the excess off though. I only made the one so far, due to the sewing operation, (wife was gone and I wanted to get the project going) but there'll be more in my future!
Heres some photos I took after the Mrs. returned. Enjoy!

Today I went on my shopping mission:

The ace hardware store knew what I wanted when asked but didn't cary it due to little demand.

Eastern Mountain  Sports only has 1 inch purple web tubing & no buckles or locks.

Home Depot was worthless.
