I wrote a letter to Hastert today.  He's the kind of lilly-livered Republican that would cave on the AWB.

I've already written Warner, DeLay and Bush.

I think we need to keep an eye on old Denny.

DeLay's remarks enraged gun-control advocates and prompted House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., to emphasize several days later that no final decision has been made on scheduling a vote for the extension. "I need to have some discussions with the president and [Republican] leadership before I make that decision," Hastert said.

We've got to write Hastert!  He's waffling.

Does anyone know Hastert's contact info?  If so, they should list it here so we can all let him know how law-abiding citizens who believe in the second amendment of the constitution feel.
Also, where do these politicians get off designating weapons for intended uses?  Many of the people I know have used military style assault rifles to hunt animals very effectively.  What the hell makes her an expert on so-called assault rifles and their effective uses?  That arguement is such a foolish one anyway.
The constitution doesn't have a clause in it stating that firearms are for hunting.  It does however state that we have a right to use them for defense of our country and ourselves and our family.  The whole suitable for hunting BS the liberals and ATF have been spewing for years is a ridiculous spin directed to the masses as a reasonable arguement.
One last point I'd like to make is that as good as the police are where I am, mostly police investigate crime REACTIVELY, they don't prevent it PROACTIVELY.  When a liberal tells me that I don't need a firearm for protection of my family and that is what police are for it shows how ignorant, idealistic and just plain dumb a person can be!  They can call the police and have their family become the next featured story on FBI Files.  I, for one, will keep my firearms ready and at least have a sporting chance at stopping an aggressor!

Here is what I sent to my representatives in Washington (I have a residence in Texas & one in Missouri)so I get to double my pleasure -he he

To the Honorable (fill in the blank)
Please support HR648, and also let the Assault Weapons Ban sunset.  It is a useless law, and should not be allowed to remain on the books.  From all I have read it has not detered crime one bit.
HR648 will do more as a deterence than the AWB did.
The facts show that in the great state of Vermont, where citizens enjoy pure 2nd amendment privileges that criminals choose not to operate there.
Why?  Because the general population can carry a firearm for their personal protection, and they do this responsibly.
HR648 is a good law.

However, the current AWB (and HR2038) is only a stepping stone for the liberals to kill the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution.  HR2038 as it is currently written does just that.  Contrary to the statistics, the legislators of HR2038 say they want to remove the listed weapons from criminals.  Criminals typically do not use the weapons listed, they use disposible handguns more often, than not.
The stated purpose of the authors of this bill and the one in the Senate is to disarm Americans, not just criminals.
I've read it in black and white - they feel none of use should be allowed to own guns.  One of the guarantees of our freedom is the right to bear arms.  Do not let these presumptuous people wittle away at our freedoms.

Thank you, Sir.

"Again I'm not certain, but I think this IS exempting the bulk of the sporting guns and not restricting them or classifying as "assault weapons" if it did then most of the US mfg's would be hard pressed to stay in business and in a downed economy this would not be a good thing for anyone. At least that's how I interpreted it."

Who gives a flying rats ass if the economy go in the toilet if this bill passes...because the day it passes, is the day the war begins...sorry to be harsh but if the ass monsters pass this new bill, they can be constued to be an Illegal government not of this country's founding and MUST BE REMOVED, BY FORCE IF NECESSARY!!!!

Here's a copy of my letter, which goes into a bit more educational detail.  One important change is that we have second amendment RIGHTS...not PRIVILEGES.  Driving a car is a privilege...bearing arms is a RIGHT.

To the Honorable [Insert Name Here],

This message is to express my support for HR648, and also the sunset of the Assault Weapons Ban.  The AWB is a useless and ineffective law, and should not be allowed to remain on the books. The statistics show it has not deterred violent crime one bit.  HR648 will serve as more of a deterence than the AWB ever did.  The facts show that in states such as Vermont, where citizens enjoy 2nd amendment rights, crime rates are lower than they are in states where these rights are infringed (such as New York and California).  HR648 is a good bill.

However, the current AWB (and HR2038) is only a stepping stone for pro-socialist sympathizers to serve their private agenda and kill the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution.  HR2038 as it is currently written does just that.  Contrary to the statistics, the legislators of HR2038 claim they want to remove the listed weapons from criminals. Fewer than 1% of criminals use the weapons listed, but prefer disposible handguns.  The crimes you've recently heard about in the news were committed by X-Law Enforcement and X-Military individuals who would have had unrestricted access to or the ability to manufacture such weapons regardless of the AWB.  The stated purpose of this bill's authors and the one in the Senate is to disarm Americans, not just criminals.  I've read it in black and white - they feel none of use should be allowed to own guns. One of the guarantees of our freedom is the right to bear arms. Do not let these presumptuous people wittle away at our freedoms.

As you are aware, Georgia has its share of violent crimes.  In Macon not too long ago, 20 men executed a home invasion and raped a 13-year old mentally challenged girl.  By banning these weapons, and the high capacity magazines they are capable of accepting, we strip away these victims' rights to defend themselves and their families... sending a clear message to criminals that gang rapes and other crimes involving multiple individuals are an effective way to overcome the innocent - since the innocent will not be permitted to bear adequate arms for this type of defensive situation.  If law enforcement feels they require these weapons to come into our neighborhood, all the more should the citizens who have to live there be justified in owning them.  To infringe upon this right is to deprive Americans of their right to life and liberty.  Thomas Jefferson once said:

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are
neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make
things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they
serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed
man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."

We live in a violent society and cannot "un-invent" weapons.  These weapons were originally designed to protect America and our freedoms.  Stripping away a free man's right to bear these arms accomplishes nothing but to support criminal violence and enslave us as a people to those who will always bear illegal firearms.

Thank you, Sir.

Damn straight!  I will refuse to obey any unreasonable and unconstitutional law such as this.  In fact, I encourage everyone to put bayonets on their rifles.
6/9/2003 3:33:14 PM EDT
[#10]
I remember having a similar discussion when the AWB came into the political ring almost 10 years ago.  Its impossible to understand why the gun control lobby can't get the words "shall not be infringed" in their heads.
Maybe I'm too much of a "traditionalist", but I beleive the writers of the constitution were correct to insert that.  What's further interesting to note is that all of them predicted the problems we would have 200 years later.
I've heard some say that no democracy can survive itself.  I don't beleive that to be true.  If this country stuck to the constitution the way it is clearly stated, the American way of life would be safe.

I for one am concerned about the road gun control has taken.  I love this country, served its Armed Forces for years, but I will not honor a law that requires me to turn over my personal firearms.  God help us if it comes to active confiscation.

The time to fix this is now.  I will do my part and lobby my reps. It might be a good idea to let these people know that we are not all 60 years old.  I'm a 23 year old soldier, and I've got plenty of elections left in my life I can vote someone out.  This issue won't go away.
6/9/2003 3:39:36 PM EDT
[#11]
What's more it makes absolutely no sense that the authors of the constitution would have added an _amendment_ and not to mention right after the bill of rights (which applies to ALL people) if the amendment were designed to pertain for military purposes only.  If this was a militia issue and not a rights issue, it would have ended up in US code somewhere and NOT in the constitution.

These liberal socialists have forgotten that the declaration of independence begins with 'We the People'..that the government is a servant of the people and not vice versa.  It'll be a sad sad day marking the dissolution of America as a democracy if we ever see confiscation.
6/9/2003 5:20:12 PM EDT
[#12]
Not to dump on California but their's is the worst shape anyway. Hypothetically, put a temporary ban on all firearms and let the rest of the county see how well that eliminates crime using firearms in California.

Why can't some news channel like fox or learning
channel or discovery channel produce a program
that would educate the general public as to the truths about assault weapons, existing gun laws
etc. I think our worst enemy is ignorance of the
general population. If every gun owner contributed a dollar to pay for such education I think it could go a long way. We need to create
the squeaky wheel and get some attention. Get
O reilly involved. I'll stop now on the ranting.
6/9/2003 6:31:37 PM EDT
[#13]
I've been following this thread for some time now.  As I see it we will not get what we want unless we are willing to DO something about it.  For example:

Use our money to educate kids about safe firearms handling.  Create and foster MORE target shooting and get KIDS involved.  They ARE the future of firearms ownership.  They NEED to know that firearms are NOT what is shown in video games and the movies.

Use our influence by actually VOTING OUT any politician that votes FOR any form of gun control - Diane Feinstein and others MUST be voted OUT!  This will send a message.

We must remember that our government is based upon OUR CIVIC DUTY to VOTE.  If we continue to complain but not vote they WILL WIN.

I for one will vote against any politican that votes for any form of gun control.

Well, if it came to confiscation, I would shoot to kill anyone who came knocking on my door to confiscate.  I think thousands if not millions of others would do the same.  And I would hope that any police officers that believe in the Bill of Rights would refuse to follow any orders that violate it.

I don't think that's what he's saying at all...
What I believe he is saying is that it is our responsibility to protect our Constitution and our inalienable rights through the main tool that our Forefathers provided us - THE VOTE...

The flip side of that coin is that if "we the people" sit back and let other people fight our battles, and let apathy rule our hearts, then Democracy WILL DIE, and it will be our fault...

America is not a "democracy," where everyone gets one vote on each issue to be decided.  It is a "representative republic", similar to what Rome once was, where repreresentatives are elected to represent the interests of the people. However, accountability and honesty are not core values of the american political system and making politicians accountable requires great effort and money.  Write your Congressmen and Senators and donate $ to the NRA.  The AWB will sunset because of the efforts of the NRA.  It will also be resurrected when we're not paying close attention in some bill like the Omnibus Healthcare and Farm Assistance Act of 2010.

[#18]
I hate to say it guys but I have a feeling that no matter how much we lobby this one we are going down on this issue. I am afraid that we are going to be sold out and there is nothing that we can do about it. When I heard the President give support to the AWB I decided that our days are numbered. I continue to send out letters and emails and make calls to my representatives but I am convinced in the end it will all be for nothing. Those that are in power are sickened by the thought of all of us out here actually excercising our final veto for their corruption and rising against them. They fear people like us and as a result they will crush us in the end. I do not believe in conspiracy theories I just feel that this is the natural progression of things. Those that gain power are desperate to retain that power. They can feel pride in our country fighting wars around the globe to defend the freedoms of people who would just as soon gut us as smile at us but they do nothing to defend our on freedoms here at home. When they get their way some will stand against them I am sure of that. Those that fight back will be labeled as terrorists and they will be slaughtered live on CNN while the masses cheer at the deaths of the wackoos. Then there will be none of us left and what remains will be the slaves that they so dream for. Maybe I just get cynical at 2:00 a.m. what do you think?

6/12/2003 7:13:03 AM EDT
[#19]
Why oh why didn't you take the blue pill?

I think you're missing an important key in this flow of natural progression.  In history, every time someone got "Too Much" power and enslaved their people, there was always someone there to smack them down back where they belong.  This usually happened when they got so powerful they thought they could take over other countries and such.

Granted, it may take 20-30 years before someone were to rise up and take down a superpower like "New America" and it would probably be hell on earth for Americans, but at some point I would think the politicians would get put out of power by either a foreign power or Civil War II.

We need to keep hammering on the fact that the concept that civilians should only "be allowed" to own guns for "sporting purposes" comes from the Nazi era German law that was later copied into the 1968 act.

We need to let the politician know they will start a war within our own country, that we will not give up our rights.  The line in the sand is drawn.  This BS sunsets, and there is no further antigun legislation, because we WILL NOT OBEY.
6/13/2003 4:44:42 AM EDT
[#23]
You make it sound as if that line is truly drawn, when in all reality if that line had been drawn there would've been another civil war after the NFA was passed, the 1989 legislation banning imports, and the first draft of the AWB.

The government is well aware that castrating someone's rights will cause a war (which is the only reason the mccarthy bill hasn't passed).  They prefer to gently lull us to sleep by passing one little piece of legislation at a time.  That way everyone will say "that's not so bad" and if a small percentage of gun owners were to rise up, this way they could be easily dismissed as criminals with further justification for additional legislation.

I am surprised we are still here after 10 years, drawing lines in the sand.

I am holding solid to my original statement that the AW ban is dead and that no new ban will see the light of day. Remember the folks whom control the House loathe people like Feinstein and Schumer. I work in a business where I have to deal much with NY and California and these people are convinced there is no country between the left and right coast.I think the fact that California faces economic ruin also furthers to debunk Communists such as Diane Feinstein. The problem in my view as I am sure some will agree yet will enrage others is the problem lies 100% in the generation that currently runs the show. With exception of men like John McCain these are the people that were off in Commie universities in the 1960's throwing rocks at returmimg war heros. The problem is a social problem in the fact that the first generation of spolied brats that were allowed to run unaccountable if their parents had enough money are running the show, that generation being the Baby Boomer generation. The problem is that the anti-American 1960's generation has hi-jacked our government. Come on guys these people have been spitting on America since they were children and old habits die hard. You want to make a real difference in changing this mentality? Refuse to vote for any liberal in the Boomer age group. Let these people wade off into the sunset (a term they so hate) where they belong. Again, the same group of people who ran amuck with incompetence and corruption in the 90's leaving us this current economic mess we are in. Look at the age group of these people Daley of Chicago, Feinstein, Schumer, all of them are Baby Boomers. Don't get me wrong many men in that generation obviously did great and wonderful things for our country but it wasn't Feinstein and Schumer that's for sure. The fact is these people really don't care about guns at all, they are simply arrogant and refuse to relent their fight against the people they can't stand i.e. Conservatives, Christians, etc. These people are past their prime and should infact be voted out of office if not tried for crimes against the Constitution. I think having charges brought against them for crimes against the Constitution would be a good beginning to ending the free for all these spolied Communist elitists have enjoyed their entire lives. For now we need to get serious and hammer these people daily with phone calls, we should have a locked thread on this site with a score card to encourage each other to compete on how many times per week they can call these Communists and tell them enough is enough. Everytime you see the liberal lying media sensationalize and lie about a gun crime by saying things like "semi-automatic weapon" or "military style assault weapon" forget it don't bother calling them, call the corporations like Dial soap and tell them since they advertise on a lying and un American news program you are boycotting their product. Believe me some dweeb at a corporation gets a million calls boycotting his product, he will think twice about where he advertises his product. Tell your kids the truth, teach them right. The mentality of these people will never leave us unfortunately as these 60's communists have had children themselves. Although most Generation-X'rs resist the utter lunacy of the Baby Boomer generation there are still many out there who are controlled by their NOW or Milliom Mom March anti American wives. You know the "modern sensitive male" TRANSLATION=NEUTERED. Want this tyrany against America to end? Yes we must vote these people out but we must run them out of every outlet of power they harbor which also includes corporate power so they cannot fuel the Communist machine. The reason we will never see a documetary on the Discovery channel about the truth of so called weapons or firearms in general is becasue documetaries are the truth and in-order to run such a program you would in-fact have to expose the truth and show which people are really commiting the bulk of violent gun crime and well, that just wouldn't be politically correct now would it? Get rid of the plague known as the 1960's Baby Boomer liberal.

By the way, the guys they paid to do this were shot to hell.
no trace evidence that way...
The ultimate goal of the politicians was to blame the attack on those "radical christians"...
as a result, christians became persona non-gratas in this country...

Well Christians will eventually be considered the enemy at some point if you believe the Bible..but when it happens it's doubtful America will still be a nation at that point.  There's no role for America in Revelation.  China and Russia are clearly there, but it seems as though America already became absorbed or nuked or something by then.

True we may be Lake America or else the Chinese Republic of America by then, but we could still be in existance as the worlds strongest nation too. In old testament times the "other continents" were unheard of at the time, so God might have simply chosen to leave us out of the text given to the apostles. I've just sent letters to my Senators. E-mails are a waste of time, and I heard that from the staff of high ranking politicians.

2nd choice: A phone call is logged by an answering machine, or a clerk, and an automated generic "thank you" reply is usually sent, and the total count/percentages are reported to the politician.

1st choice: Typed, professional looking letter with no profanity. Tell him that if he participates in anti-gun legislature you swear you will spend your last dollar and your last breath working to defeat him at his next election. With God as my witness.

IN ANY CASE, IF YOUR ZIP-CODE IS NOT IN THE POLITICIAN'S JURISDICTION YOUR COMMUNICATION GOES INTO THE TRASH!!

I ah, ah, I really wonder just how serious some of you are about "kill'em at the door"? I want to see the sunset on the AWB ban and now I will have to wait and see what happens before I go $2000 into an AR. It seems a little too zealous to speak this way with 16% of the members on this board are law enforcement. In a way it is good, since they will know what to expect from us when they RAPE our gun rights. However, on the other hand, this could be just the fodder they need to prove that a. we are dangerous, b. we will act like crimanals and must be stopped, AND c. they WILL kick the door in and expose your family to lethal and irresponsible CQB force beacuse you said "When they come for my guns I am taking a sh*tload of a**holes with me"! Iam a conservative Republican and I believe in unseating a government that has raped our rights and the memory of those who spilt their blood and guts to pay for our freedom. I too will fight, God forbbid the day comes, but please be mindful and active in limiting the reasons that they will count when they go to vote on the new BS, graba**tic, amphibian rat sh*t excuse of a law.

New guy! Hey everybody!! [%(]

They always use the term "Armed and Dangerous" when describing very bad criminals. Just think what would happen to the criminal element if everybody was "Armed and Dangerous". Contact your congressman about the AWB!!!!

What I find really interesting is the final sentence of the Hon. Rep.'s remarks:
"I can think of no legitimate reason for civilians to have access to military -style weapons that are useless for recreational activities and only serve the purpose of furthering unwanted criminal activity."

Just think about how far away her mindset is from that of the members of this forum.  I really think that she doesn't get it.  I wonder if she is familiar with the question posed at least as far back as the Romans:
QUI CUSTODIET IPSOS CUSTODES?
Who watches the watchman?
In this nation, we the people must watch the watchmen.

Sure, I can vote.  But so could a citizen of the Soviet Union, or Iraq under the Baath Party.  The difference is that our founding fathers understood that people without power don't matter to people with power.
At the time of the American Revolution, we were already a people with power.  We decided not to accept a government that abused its power.  Having fought to free ourselves from that unhealthy relationship, we determined that we would not place our necks in a noose of our own devising.  We built a government with checks and balances, both within and without.  We wrote a Constitution that recognizes the People and their United States are the source of the government's authority.
Also, remember that the "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms" is not granted to us by the Bill of Rights, it is a pre-existing right that is merely declared in the Bill of Rights.  The government authorized by the Constitution is restricted from infringing on this right because a well regulated Militia is necessary to the security of a free State.

I'm sure my audience here is already aware of these facts.  But the Hon. Rep. McCarthy, and those who think like her, are not.  They just see what seems like an effective way to make people more secure.  We should remember that - most of the people who support the goal of disarming their fellow citizens do not wish to destroy our freedom - they wish to improve our security.
They just have a small dream - more safety for themselves and their families.  They trust the government, and we do have a government that is almost always trustworthy.
I read a quote once about small dreams.
"At the beginning of the empire, great men dreamed great dreams, and achieved them.  At the end of the empire, small men dreamed small dreams, and achieved them."

I've got a bigger dream. I want security not just for my grandchildren, but for their grandchildren.  And I know that power corrupts, and that power attracts the corrupt.  So there must be checks, and they must be outside the government, in case even that might fall to the selfish.

I just wish that those people with their small dreams could understand that I do not wish to select arms based on their suitability for sporting purposes, or for self-defense.  I wish to select firearms based on their suitability for improving the security of a free state.

In case you're interested, the Hon. Rep McCarthy's remarks are listed in the May 9, 2003 Congressional Record - select "Extension of Remarks" then it is article 49.

I completly agree with the above post.  The whole ponit of the 2nd amendment is to allow the people tho have weapons that have no other perpus (spelling?) than the continued assurence of the peoples ability to keep the goverment from abusing its power.

From what I have read in this thread this bill would effectivly legislate the 2nd amendment off of the bill of rights.  This is a very bad legal presitent to set. What happens when they decide the only way to stop child pronography is to make laws limiting fredom of expresion?  When you try to call it unconstiotional all they will have to do the site the legal presitent set with the new AWB.  Every one even non shooters should be very concerned when we let there be laws that limit the rights of the people.  You can't say the 2nd amendment is differnt because thats not the way law works. The law is supposed to treat every amendment the same so as not to "discriminate" and when they want to limit your other freedoms they will suddenly remember that fact.

"Gryphon's" submission just above is the finest piece of writing I have ever read. It should be engraved on plaques and hung above the entry of every school and Federal building.

I wish I had some way to copy it and send it to every Legislator...
