So I just realized the geissele super duty now comes with a black oxide barrel. They are no longer parkerized. I have one on back order and didn’t realize they switched to black oxide (my fault I know). I’ve always heard black oxide was a terrible choice to protect steel on a firearm. Is that true? Should I be concerned? How does one properly maintain black oxide on a barrel? Thanks. |

Quoted: I have legitimately never heard of Black Oxide being used for the barrel. I wouldn't be surprised from them though, and then sell it for $500 stripped. Edit: the website says it's chromlined I mean the outside of the barrel. They used to be manganese phosphate. I know the inside is chrome lined. |

Black Oxide/bluing offers little to no benefit besides making the part black. I don't get why this company would ship such an expensive piece of equipment with such an inferior treatment. Next you're gonna tell me the receivers are made of 6061 or sheet metal. |

They used to use mag phosphate barrels but changed recently. Only reason I can think of is to save money. |

Black oxide is a bit less durable than parkerizing Think of it as a porous bluing, the texture holds oil better Parkerizing is a process where manganese phosphate is bonded to the metal My DDC super duty, a year plus old, has a nitride barrel I would suspect Geissele went black oxide to do the finish “in house” |

Does the barrel have the letter, "G" on it, near the muzzle? I got a, "nitride" Geissele CHF barrel and the inside looks shiny silver and the outside is semi-gloss black. It did not state chrome lined, but why is it shiny silver inside? There is a silver or white letter, "G" on the outside of the barrel. |

I don't know that it is chrome, but it is so shiny inside, it looks silver and from every angle from the chamber end. The flash hider is nano coated / treated and is a shiny Surefire SOCOM closed tine flash hider. The outside of the barrel is shiny black, while the flash hider is a shiny dark gray. The barrel finish looks different from my other nitride barrels. I wonder if it is a black oxide with a shiny finish and a chrome lining, but the box is labeled nitride. |

From early this year: Quoted: We offer both. A mag phos, CHF, Chrome lined barrel OR Nitride CHF barrel. The one with Nitride says Nitride. The other doesn't. Also both are available to take a look at on our web store currently. Variety is a good thing, lots of people like or even prefer Nitride barrels, so now we have both to choose from. -GACS Assuming that currently it is black oxide/chrome bore OR nitride for choices. Both CHF. |

I don’t have the rifle yet, it’s on backorder so I’m still waiting for it to ship. |

I can’t speak to black oxide but Lauer DuraHeat is fantastic. FDE is my favorite. DuraHeat |

Some food for thought: •Phosphate and oil affords more corrosion protection than black oxide with same oil. •Black oxide can be used as a rust retardant, but it is not as effective as black phosphate. The black zinc phosphate acts sacrificially to protect the steel, whereas the black oxide will rely on the after-finish for corrosion protection. •Benefits of manganese phosphate include its superior corrosion protection in comparison to black oxide, as well as it’s anti-galling and self-lubrication properties which provide continuous protection on gun parts subject to wear. • Black oxide is the lowest cost and least effective long term coating for the applications. |

Quoted: Black oxide is a crap finish. Mild corrosion protection at best. Much of the time it rubs off. Keep it doused in oil. Uh, no…it might wear off but hot salt bluing/black oxide alters the metal surface so it’s not gonna rub off. Old school rust bluing is actually more durable but slow so $$$. Yeah, not as rust resistant as park, but it’s not great either. Seems like an odd choice since hot bluing shit is more caustic than park solution, less durable, and at least on a small scale more expensive. Who the fuck knows, it’s Geissele?!?

Quoted: 1. Hit with 1000 grit sandpaper 2. Rinse with acetone 3. Spray with high temp Krylon 4. ????? 5. Profit I love me some Geissele but they've been doing some odd stuff recently. Seems like a case study in the making on the dangers of constant horizontal diversification. |

Quoted: Uh, no…it might wear off but hot salt bluing/black oxide alters the metal surface so it’s not gonna rub off. Old school rust bluing is actually more durable but slow so $$$. Cold black oxide treated components are prone to the finish rubbing off. Adding, wax/lacquer will bring the corrosion resistance level up/comparable with the hot and mid-temperature methods. I found this out with Oxpho blue and Dicropan T-4. What didn't rub off turned a strong patina in short order. Mag phosphate finishing remedied that, no issues for me since. ETA: I'm sure that G is using the hot bath application, and the most durable of the black oxide processes. Still, not for me personally. |

I love the super duty rifles but I noticed they kind of devolved over time with the barrels. I'm sure they are selling like hotcakes and the average person won't tell but I'm glad I got in on the earlier versions. If they are cutting corners on the barrels it makes me think of what else is going on. I know they are running a business and I understand the average person probably won't know any difference and they definitely will say it's very high quality as with everything else they downgrade. |
If Geissele is cold bluing chrome-lined barrels on $2K rifles I’d poo my pants…or not…. ![]() ETA: No matter what, it’s not as durable and an odd choice, especially for an AR pattern barrel. Blued guns can stay rust free but you do gotta oil more often. I’m not putting the same effort into preserving the appearance of these weapons as the old Colts. Just a weird choice…shucks, maybe somebody just boned up the description. |

There are several types of black oxide finish. The US military has at least four types that are used. Romanian AK's have a black oxide finish, not phosphate. With the price of ammo these days, by the time the barrel wears out, a replacement Daniel Defense barrel will seem cheap. My Geissele, "nitride" barrel is fairly glossy / semi-glossy black on the outside and looks silver colored inside. |
