[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Frontier 55 grain boom and damaged extractor. *update Hornady says pound sand (Page 3 of 5)

AR won't fire if it's out of battery, the firing pin can't reach the primer. Bolt has to fully rotate close, then the carrier can start closing the final gap that allows the primer to be impacted by the firing pin. Sucks because I have 200 rounds of Hornady Frontier 75gr waiting at Bass Pros for pick up. |

Shit. I'd be cancelling that order. I'm not going to sweat it. At least I know now that this stuff is loaded on the extreme hot side. At least I know fragmentation will be good .
Like I stated in the thread I started.... I reload, so I can pull a few of the bullets and weigh the powder, check the cases in a gauge, take measurements etc.... before I shoot any. If I find something wrong, I'll contact Hornady with lot numbers etc. |
|
They've known about this for almost a year, so hopefully they have done something to cure the issues. Unless they are trying to blow up rifles and invite a class action, it doesn't make much sense that they would know about a defect in their product and do nothing about it. |

I shot 400 rounds of 55g Frontier last weekend. Checked casings every 50 or so rounds and found no issues. ![]() Some things are not worth the risk. |

I have a dumb question.
Could an issue with low-quality brass cause a head flow symptom like what is shown in the OP's photos? Part of me thinks "counterfeit Chinese brass" and part of me thinks that's still highly impossible, that it takes a massive overpressure. And if you study the M231, you see that a out of battery fire is nearly impossible with the AR bolt design. If you remove the bcg and manually push the firing pin forward while extending and retracting the bolt, you can see how this works. Sorry if duplicate post, I didn't read past page 1. |

My pal shot thousands of rounds of Freedom Munitions ammo issue free....until his DD grenaded. They offered him ammo for his troubles. ![]() Some things are not worth the risk. |

Agreed. Therein lies the rub with Frontier...It's good-very good ammo, until it's not. When it first came out I shot a good deal of the 75gr T2 loadings and never had any issues with it. But after all the reported KBs across numerous bullet weights, I swore it off. How many guys and how many bad rounds out of how many rounds produced and or shot? |
|
Quoted: What numerous reported Kabooms? 5 guys? 6? How many guys and how many bad rounds out of how many rounds produced and or shot? You need to up your search skills. (Not that you are likely to listen anyhow, you obviously have your mind set). The number of reported cases on this board alone should make you take note. |

Negative. You need to up your search skills. (Not that you are likely to listen anyhow, you obviously have your mind set). The number of reported cases on this board alone should make you take note. It's a handful from what I can see; a very tiny percentage of rounds produced. Edited to add. From what I found, the Kabooms are limited to two lot numbers. SMQ18C844-002 and SMQ18C844-003 https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/Hornady-Frontier-over-pressure-/16-736486/ https://www.ar15.com/forums/General/-ARCHIVED-THREAD-Witnessed-a-KABOOM-today-Updated-pics-on-page-5/5-2145296/?page=1 If anyone can find other affected lot numbers, please post them. BTW, the lot number for the rounds I purchased is SMQ18L868-016 |

Go to any public range, and the RO of that one range alone will tell you of at least one, usually multiple .300 BO induced Kabooms. The last one I asked at, had one guy alone responsible for 2 of them. |

From what I can determine (so far), the Kabooms are limited to the two lots I listed. If you don't have those two lot numbers, you are good to go.
Hornady Ammo in general isn't bad. They just had some bad lots that unfortunately resulted in Kabooms. Any manufacturer can fuck up. It's the name of the game. |

My local range sells this ammo. Do they hate their customers? What most likely happened is that Hornadys ( or LC who makes it for them) equipment was intermittently overcharging cases for a couple of lots and the employees and or supervisors didn't catch it. The guys who started shooting the affected lots had Kabooms and posted them online. The company didn't admit responsibility and blamed it on the firearms. Now some folks are scared to shoot it; even though, in all likelihood, the problem was caught and corrected a long time ago. |

Now some folks are scared to shoot it; even though, in all likelihood, the problem was caught and corrected a long time ago. Maybe they really did internally acknowledge the failures and fixed, while publicly denying the failures. If so, that unethical as fuck, at best - and enjoy getting destroyed in court if there's an email or text showing you did that. |

With all the "maybe this" and "probably that" shit related to this ammo and the already experienced issues by many, I'd not touch that shit. I remember a guy shooting gun show reloads through his Steyr .40 cal 10 yrs ago at the local range, "It's fine" were his exact words. He now has 1 less pistol, pair of eyeglasses, and right eye. |

With 40 calibers, the ammo is loaded to higher pressure and in some firearms the cartridge typically isn't fully supported; so there is an elevated chance of Kabooms. As far as reloads go, I only shoot my own. It's also a good idea to wear safety or shooting glasses. |

And not an attempt to compare pistol loadings to center fire rifle, just an example of willingly/ ignorantly risking damage/bodily harm on shit ammo. And he was wearing eye pro, the slide left the frame tearing his cheek from eye socket to his ear. And no, Steyr did not offer any liability. Reloaded ammo voided that shit. |

At this point, everyone needs to contact all parties who had issues and get statements from everyone. I've read probably 20 of these and 50 freedom munitions over the past couple of years. |

Shooting a loading from the same mfgr that has has multiple issues posted across multiple boards and documented with photos knowingly substantially increases that risk. Hence my entire point. That being said, unless you or someone else can find additional lot numbers, the only ones that we know for sure are affected are the two sequencial numbers I posted; taken from two Frontier 55 grain Kaboom Threads. Anymore info on this? Were there any reports of kabooms? Last I looked into it, I read about popped primers from a batch a few years back (that could occasionally lock up an AR solid, if it fell in the FCG). I've shot a couple thousand rds of IMI M193. I think I might have another case somewhere. Quoted:

I'd heard of popped primers necessitating drifting the pins out due to jamming, before. I figured that seemed like a good time to eliminate that possibility. Yeah, it was hard to pass up the post election deals on the IMI M193. These days, I think PMP is one of the best deals going for Full bore 5.56. |

Fuck Hornady. I still remember the election of 2012 and guys here on arfcom uncovering their family members (who sat on the board) making donations to anti-gun Democrat candidates, I got zero tolerance for that kinda scumbag treachery anymore. Fuckin fudds. |

Nice! Looks like good ammo to stock deep. I'm gonna have to do some research on that. I've been hoarding PRVI . My guns seem to like the 69 gr HPBT, just ordered a stash of their M193. Lotta good data on it. Wolf Gold is the bulk of my range ammo. |

Quoted: Many kabooms didn’t know their lot numbers. I’m sure it is a lot problem.... that they resolved.... but given the fact they blew up a lot of guns and never took any ownership, calling it a laughable OOB when the bolts were locked, makes them a joke. I won’t shoot Frontier ammo of any kind, at any price. There are too many good quality options from manufacturers who are reputable, safe, and take ownership for their mistakes. It's easier to deny than take responsibility. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Lake City manufacture Hornady Ammunition? https://www.gunsandammo.com/editorial/hornady-lake-city-armory-team-up-to-produce-affordable-accurate-mil-spec-ammo/247610 |
| Isn't it Hornady that offers the Superformance line? I recall it oddly had issues in non rifle length setups and was recommended to not be fired from anything but a 20" rifle gas system rifle or longer. But I can't figure out how it would be okay in a 20" but not a carbine or pistol? |
