I hate to jump on this thread so late, but I recently picked up a LaRue fixed BUIS and installed it on my training gun. My impressions are as follows: This sight is ROBUST, like all of LaRue's products. The rear sight aperature is well protected, and the mount itself is rock solid. The mount/throw-lever system has shown to be repeatable, which allows me to stow the BUIS either in a vest pocket or underneath a forend rail, so it is completely out of the way unless I need it. Some users recommended using it as a small vertical foregrip. The LaRue product reminds me of the Mark Brown unit, but streamlined and product improved. The throw lever on the right side may impede operation of the charging handle using two fingers. This may be an issue for wrong handers. As a right hander who only uses the left side of the charging handle, this is a non-issue FOR ME. The position of the sight is excellent, and in conjunction with the LaRue M68CCO mount, it is completely out of the way. I look over the rear sight aperature when using the Aimpoint, but the irons are there if needed. For those who want a flip-up BUIS, there are good choices out there (Troy Ind., GG&G, Knights). In fact, I may end up with a Troy unit just to play with. However, the LaRue offering is the HEAT for a fixed BUIS, and is what I use on my gun. Tim |

Woo Hoo! Read all this and finally reached an end to post something at! I use ARMS throw levers on the majority of my accessories. And I can say that depending on how I'm configuring things there are a few times (Though I'll admit not too many) that I need to remove my rear BUIS. Even though I run a KAC 300 mtr. there are times when a final rail step will get me where I want to go on a PVS 14 positioning. Damn'd if this situation hasn't always happened at night in the dark of a field or along a river bank. So then it's time to dig out the leatherman tool and unscrew the KAC bolt. If it's winter out and cold it's even less convenient. A throw lever BUIS would be heaven for me in this type of situation, and anyone else that goes out and gets their guns dirty and muddy when they use them. Now, if only Grant's hunt 101 album was working so I could see what I'm defending. |

Performed some live fire testing of the BUIS, including some close range work and completion of the carbine portion of the MEU(SOC) qual. The BUIS is out of the way when using the Aimpoint and does not interfere with manipulations. Here are some pics. Sorry u-baddog...operator malfunction... Thanks for the save. I am very interested in this sight. I kinda like the brass look but not sure why. It looks a little bulky in the pictures showing it mounted and they've definitely got to get rid of the white-letter advertising on the left side. Wolf |
Hey, Grant, mellow out. I know you've been fighting the LaRue war here but I'm not bashing the sight. I just expressed a personal preference opinion. No, I'm not "VERY ill-informed" -- at least not it the way you accuse me. I know that other manufacturers have white lettering too. HOW is THAT pertinent? "If everyone jumps of a cliff..." I actually don't mind a little white lettering but the picture on this thread shows quite a bit of lettering, logo, etc. I just don't think it looks professional but, hey, its not a big deal...just a comment/"I wish" thing. Its ironic that I really like what you have been saying about this sight and was just about to e-mail you about purchasing one. I guess we'll put that on hold -- at least until I cool down a bit. I know that I'm not the most experienced and knowlegeable AR-15 owner at ARFCOM and that maybe some of my questions and/or comments appear pretty stupid to some but, hey, give me a break. If I knew it all, why the Hell would I be here? Wolf

I wasn't trying to rip your head off, but am tired of mall ninja's complaining about the white lettering on LaRue's products as if they are the ONLY company that does it. Do they think that white lettering is going to give away their position as they are stalking their neighbors cat in the backyard? In the past when I have had to show people pics of other companies products as they were unaware that others did it and thought that LaRue were the only ones... C4 |
| Mi Dos Centavos: I purchased the LaRue mounts for the ACOG, Aimpoint, and EOTech from Grant (kudos on the near real-time shipping and 3 day delivery from VA to CA!). I have been thoroughly impressed with ever aspect of said mounts, to the point of selling their counterparts. HOWEVER, I looked at the BUIS with alot of skepticism. I think that pretty much all the reasons why this BUIS would suck that were written in this thread went through my mind once or twice at least. In the end, the truth lies in the experience of the user. So, realizing this, I happened to come upon a Larue BUIS in the EE (sorry Grant) and purchased it. I mounted it on my rifle thinking "this'll be back on the EE by the end of the day" and did some acquisition drills with it. Lo and Behold, I found it to be the sturdiest, smoothest, easiest centering, wide FOV, fixed BUIS I have seen. The fact that I can flip it off or on without wrenches (and retain my zero) should I so desire (and not worry about out of spec rails if I swap it to another rifle) was just gravy. I'll grant that alot of folks can't, or won't, spend nearly a hundred bucks to test someone elses opinion. However, I have to say that despite my skepticism and risk in spending the dough, I was as impressed with this ugly block of a BUIS as I have been with anything in my shooting experiences. I look at the LaRue BUIS like the Troops look at the A-10 Warthog. Built like a brick shithouse, and looking like one too, but if I have to depend on anything, this is the one. |
| I'm glad to hear this as I've just ordered mine today. I do have a question for all it's current users. With my RRA flattop I found that I needed a taller front sight to zero correctly with their detachable rear "Tactical Carry Handle". With this BUIS are you finding that the 14.5"/16" barrels are requiring that taller front post |
I had no need for a taller post up front. |
I am glad to hear you like the BUIS. I think they are the best and have them on my personal weapons. I believe that it is the most rugged BUIS on the market today... C4 |
I have to put the matches at Blackwater first. If we have a IPSC match that weekend I cant make it again. It sucks but first things first Why dont you come out and shoot a match. We have one sunday. |
I would love to as BW is only 45 minutes from me. I am usually playing catch up on Sundays with the business. I am also trying to buy a boat so I think my weekends will be full! C4 |

I am sold on the LaRue BUIS but I have two questions: 1. A couple of posters have indicated that they needed a taller front sight post with this BUIS. I guess that this is a problem with the height of the rail on the upper receiver...so...does the RRA upper receiver suffer from this? 2. Since the elevation will be set on the front sight post: a. Is there a match-grade-graduated front sight that I should purchase (smaller incremental adjustments); and b. Is there a "tried and true" method/procedure for sighting in using the front sight "method." I can do "hit and miss" but I just thought that some anal-retentive (aren't we all) expert might have developed the "right way to do it." Thanks...no offense to anyone...the opinions stated here are someone else's...I was forced to write this at gunpoint, etc. Wolf

I will do my best to answer your questions. The front sight issue seems to be hit or miss. I would just use the front site post you got and if doesn't work, get the taller one. I think KNS makes some very precise front sight posts, check with Denny's guns (dealer on this board). I don't know what the tried and true method is to zeroing your irons, but if you already have your optic zeroed you can use that to give you and idea where your at..... C4 |
I didn't have to switch to a taller front sight post. My standard one is perfect. HTH |
| Talked to Mark yesterday. Very quick responses to my questions. I have an Aimpoint mount and BUIS on the way. The BUIS is going to have a forward folding lever. I always charge with my right (strong) hand when I am prone and was a little worried about finger clearance. I'll post pics when I get it mounted up on the new midlength build. |
|
Received a box from LaRue today. Unfortunately they sent me a BUIS with a rear folding lever. I installed it and did some clearance drills. As suspected the lever is in the way when I charge with my right hand. Moving the sight one notch forward on the rail doesn't allow for the use of a rear flip up cap on the Aimpoint. Sent Mark an email. Hopefully he can get me a BUIS with a forward throw lever as promised. I do really like the Aimpoint mount. Mark is on the case. Dammit Jason, Say it ain't so... I'll send you the correctly configured unit tomorrow and then behead those responsible at sunset. Send me the other back at your leisure and I'll e-mail you a video of the beheading. And please accept my apologies for the hassle. Mark P.S. Just kidding about the beheading. |
|
I haven't tried mine yet 'cause I don't have a barrel. Is it just a matter of replacing the lever assembly or is it more involved than that? Since I'll be dragging mine through brush, etc., I'd be a bit worried that a forward facing lever would catch on something and I'd lose it. Wolf |
If you got a standard Larue BUIS, the lever should lock to the rear. innocent_bystander special ordered his specifically requesting a forward locking lever. Even if it faced forward, locking it down tightly with the included wrench, it would take a great deal of force to open the lever. |
|
Levers to the left, levers to right, frontwards backwards, fight fight fight! Grant, please distill this for me. Is this sight practical and functional for wronghanders such as myself? Further, is it practical and functional when utilized with a stock charging handle, rather than the latest, greatest ...again with regard to my sinistral affliction |
|
For left-handers, you would maintain a firing grip with the firearm shouldered. Rotate the rifle in your shoulder pocket so the pistol grip is toward 9 o'clock and using your right hand work the charging handle. So the long answer is the LaRue sight should work fine , if that is the technique used. |
That is the only way I have seen Left wingers do it. The problem is that most of them take their left hand off the trigger and clear the jam or charge the bolt. The LaRue BUIS will work for either left handed or right handed shooters.. C4 |
|
I don't think there should be any worry about the levers catching on something and popping open. They can be adjusted so that they are very difficult to flip open. I figured Mark would just send me a new lever that pointed the other direction but he wanted the sight back. So I'm not sure if it is a whole new site or what that I'll be getting. Mark has never failed to answer an email in more than an hour during the day. Excellent customer service is an understatement. |

well im a newbie to the site and to ARs however, in my 2 week long search for iron sights to put on my flattop I cant seem to walk away from the looks of the larue unit. It screams sexy while being manly at the same time ;) I had considered buying a LMT unit but when it came time to buy I just couldnt steer from the LaRue unit. The clean lines on the left side are what sold me the most. I also dont understand why everyone is whining about the elevation (lack of) issue. Honestly how many people here are going to take their carbine to a tactical match and then turn around and try to shoot bullseyes at 600yds with their iron sights? Maybe i just dont understand the "one gun do it all attitude". please dont shoot me |
