| I've been watching this from the sidelines for several days now and I thought I'd chime in with some relevant info before this got too nasty. If you go and find the various videos that Brownell's has put out, they discuss why Pmags do not fit. Between the bevel on the sides for the modern angled magwells and the built up section of the front of the mag to help accommodate the internal curve, they could not make it fit inside of the profile they established to match the old lowers. I suspect they would have had to make the front of the well too thin. One way around this would be to mimic the massively angled magwell cut of the prototype sporter model, but it's hardly the 'iconic' model of AR-10 that they are going for. Also, if you keep up with some of the updates they've put out, the bolt carrier is getting the three vent holes that are so prominent on the originals. |

All it took was a 20-something historically minded college kid to point out something.  I'm mainly guessing that that was the problem, but it makes sense considering that one of the things that makes Pmags reliable is the internally curved geometry. The added boss at the front of the mag just below the 'magwell portion' of the mag must be there for a reason and I'd bet it is to provide room for the internal curve. It may still be possible to modify the mags to fit, but I'd question their structural integrity after removing the extra material. I tend to follow the 'retro mags for retro guns' line of thinking anyway.

All this pmag stuff is a bit ridiculous to me. Pmags can be easily modified to function in original AR10’s with minimal dremel work. I’ve been using one for several years I modified with zero issues. Ok, why not the lame knock off of the Sudanese handguard.. A nice repro with a better heat shield would be a good back up for the poor design of the original which melts under heavy use. I have spares but one needs to be very careful with original handguards found on most presample early 10's... and the few semi parts guns out there.

PTRS Later Sudanese HGs had an internal heat shield. Your pre-sample guns should have a metal liner built into the inner surface of the HG. |
