I finally got my 6.8 PacNor Savage sporter out for some bbl break-in, chrono testing and a few groups. This is a 22" Standard Match, sporter wgt bbl.

Remington factory 115gr MC
1:2617     Cleaned bbl after this shot {cbats}
2:2617 ?? I forgot to reset the chrono
3:2585      cbats
4:2632
5:2568

SSA 115 Extreme early production
1:2721  Stiffer bolt lift noticed. Primer still has radius at edge with some flattening.
2:2846  Stiff lift again. Primer a little better than #1
3:2804    cbats
4:2756
5:2790  Bolt lift on these two somewhat less than first 2. Primer looks better .

SSA 115 Extreme from the first batch with reduced powder charge
1:2584
2:2558
3:2584  cbats
4:2544
5:2587  bolt lift normal, no pressure signs

SSA 115 MatchKings from the first batch with the reduced powder charge
1:2651
2:2679
3:2739
4:2716
5:2777  Bolt lift normal, no pressure signs.

I also fired 3 reloads with the 110 Vmax over 26 grs of RL10X. Didn't crono them for some reason. Did shoot a nice group of about 3/8" at 80 yds.  I fired 5 of the matchkings for group and got app 11/16".  This is with the wind blowing my target holder back and forth. Got to build a better set up than the wimpy real estate sign

I am very impressed with the PacNor bbl.

A couple of questions:

-Silver State Armory, are you going to a small primer?

-I Noticed a lot of pics w/ cans (sound suppressors), who makes a 6.8 can?

My can on the bolt gun is a custom job from SRT.

Yes SSA went small rifle primer.

Yes we begin shipping small rifle primer cases and cartridges next week.

Also next week we will begin shipping our new Barnes Triple Shock loads. Velocity from a 16 inch barrel is 2,715 FPS and it has less then a MOA at 100 yards. This is the best Hunting projectile we could fine. Next week only specail for AR15 members 20 rounds for $19.00 + shipping. Midway will be carrying them at $22.00 per 20.

Yes it can be used in a CMMG and DPMS

Powder: 27.0 - 29.0 gr. H322 seems to be the best
Primer: doesn't matter unless you've got a match rifle, then Federal match (large or small depending on brass)
Bullet: Hornady 110 gr. VMAX @2.240" - 2.275"

If you don't know reloading then find some help and do alot of reading.
If you do then do more reading and take it slow working on the low ends of the powder amounts.

One thing to watch. If you are using Winchester primers I have a problem with soft primer cups in my AR's. All my AR's pierce the primer at moderate loadings. I don't have a problem with them in my bolt guns just my AR's. Not that all Winchester primers are soft as in previous discussions others haven't had the same problem and yet a few have.  Just something to be aware of.

Update on my Savage 6.8 feeding problems. After reviewing the various options I ordered a C Products 6.8 mag from Midway [ on sale right now for $23 ]. I then took out the 6.8 follower and fitted it to the Savage 223 mag box. I had to narrow up the anti-tilt guide rails on the follower and also shorten the guide rails so that 3 rounds would fit in the box.

I then cut the C products mag spring down and tweaked it so that the bottom coil would lay flat and I also closed up the spacing between the bottom 2 coils to  reduce the preload.

Now the rounds are pressed up evenly  against the feed lips no matter how many rounds are in the mag and feeding is flawless. With the stock follower and leaf spring the 2nd and 3rd rounds had too much freedom of movement and the case rim was not pushed up against the feed lips. This was after trying to recontour the original follower. Part of the problem is the original follower is not an anti-tilt design and part is the leaf spring follower.

This is an relatively easy project. PacNor and Douglas both offer pre-fit bbls in 6.8 for the Savage bolt actions. You will have to machine the bolt head and do a little dremel work on the extractor and do the magazine follower mods.

Art, I enjoyed our conversation on the phone today.  You gave me a few good tips that I will be trying.  When my buddy Randy from Reno gets that shipment of brass we'll be doing a lot more testing.  I will make up several of the adjustable gas blocks and let you know how they work.
Let me know your prices on the FMJ bullets we talked about too.  We may buy a large quantity for testing and use, for the group of men I told you about.  Randy expresses his thanks too.
  We'll be in touch

I think that issue is now resolved with SSA's new recipe for the Xtreme bullet, which had pressure issues in some barrels.  CMMG now sanctions SSA ammo in their barrels and other manufacturers are also good-to-go.

CMMG barrels have never had a problem with tight chambers, they have been to spec since day one. They stand behind what they sell. If you reload, IM and I can get you started w/ some data for the mid-length barrel. Enjoy!

Art & Randall,

I spoke with Ken of Clymer Manufacturing while at Camp Perry.  He was unaware of the 6.8SPC chamber reamer discrepancy.   I passed him your info from this thread. He may be in touch, I am not sure.  If you want his contact info I can e-mail it.

I spoke with Ken at Clymer in Jan or Feb of 2004.
They were using the remington/saami drawing at that time.
I'm sure they came to the same conclusions as everyone else when they actually setup the grinder to make tools.
This whole discussion about the neck-throat transitional angle does not seem to be a realistic issue because the reamer grinders all keep the 45 degree angle and don't worry so much about WHERE it happens to end on the throat.
As the WHERE it ends on the throat was what we were debating, it becomes a moot point.

Well sorry I butted in then.  Have a nice day..

FYI Here's Ken's response back to me:

Dave – The proper dimension is 1.71085”. There is a 45 degree angle at the casemouth. Our reamer print shows the same as SAAMI. It does appear that the numbers are transposed on the print from Pacific Tool. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.             – Ken -

This is like a day time soap.

One last time:

Chambers to the low end of SAAMI with cartridges to the middle or high end of SAAMI will not work. CMMG at least did make their chambers to the low end I do not know what they are doing now, that is why early on there was a problem as our cartridges were right in the middle.

CMMG without  question makes a fine weapon. No fault of gun manufactures or as far as I am concern SSA'S but rather the over lapping dimensions of SAAMI. We now have to make our cartridges to the very bottom of the dimensional spec.

One reamer manufacturer told me he had no less than 5 different chamber reamer designs for the 6.8 goes to show you what we were up against.

Some guns can handle  the Old X-Treme with no problems but others could not, as a case in point see rjay's post on page 13 of this thread. There has been several articles in gun magazine's where they tested the old X-Treme with no problems but they were all in Military type weapons.

We did make adjustments to the X-Treme and it now works well in all guns as far as we can tell.  We want to keep the X-Treme as it is a good inexpensive cartridge, everyone can not afford to keep throwing A-Max's or Match Kings down range.

Our rounds must be working in CMMG'S as we have a shippment leaving this week for them.

I purchased a new complete 16" CMMG upper assembly in 6.8 SPC, CAR config. Seemed to have a bit of bad luck I thinks. Please, do let me know what you think I could do or should have done to remedy the problem.

1) Out of the box the gas tube was visibly diagonal in the upper. The BCG could move over it but with noticable resistance. Gun failed the "drop the carrier into the receiver without getting stuck" test. Bent the tube back in place. Carrier moved smoothly again. Not sure if my bending it back caused something funny hat
3) Spent handload and factory brass showed no outward, typical signs of pressure like overly-flat primers, cratering, or flow marks from the extrator or ejector. There were small shiny dings or scratches in the case rim from the extrator. Handloads were Hornady v-max 110gr sitting on 28.7 gr of H322 in a remington 6.8 shell, seated near the bottom of saami spec.

4) FTFs would happen every 20-30 rounds. Looked like short stroking. Long gouge along the case side and the bolt pressing/resting on the side of the case with the tip of the bullet jammed at the top edge of the barrel.

5) No mods were made to the upper aside from the usual adornments like Aimpoint, tac latch, and Troy handguard.

Did I assess this right by thinking there was a timing issue and rsulting hard extraction while the fired case was still under high pressure? Would a heavier carrier helped remedy this?

I've contacted CMMG and am awaiting a response. I hope I don't have to send it back!

Reloading once-fired Hornady 6.8SPC brass, small primer pocket, shooting out of a Stag Arms Model 5 16" carbine.

I understand I should trim COAL to the low end of the spec, but do I really need a case gauge to measure how far to bump the shoulder back? I just want to load for safety, not particularly interested in sub-MOA accuracy out of my carbine. As long as I can consistently hit a 6" metal plate at 300m I'm GTG.

Thanks.

my CMMG 16" mid-length has the same problem. I just got it 7/19. I was going to make sure that this was not caused by the way I was resting the gun the last time. thought the mag may have bumped into my sandbag during recoil to cause it. let us know what you find out if you send it back.

We'll I got my barrel from Randall a few weeks ago and I have finished testing it.

For most that don't know I was in the 1st group buy that Randall did.  My barrel had something wrong with it, the groups averaged 2"-3.5" nad held to no pattern.  I changed everything, and I mean everything, out to try and cure it, no good.  So after 300 rounds I got in touch with Randall.  We concluded that he got a bum barrel blank, his first ever, but these things happen.  He generously offered to send me a new one.  Some manufacturers would simply say tuff you own it now.

Randall is a standup guy to deal with and stands behind his work.

OK, the setup:

18" AR15barrels.com (Randall Rausch) barrel
RRA Lower
RRA 2 stage trigger
A2 stock
CMT A4 pper w/ M4 cuts
YHM Freefloat tube
Springfield 6x scope

29.0 gr. of H322
Hornady 110 gr. VMAX @ 2.285"
Large primer brass
Groups averaging 0.55" - 0.70"
Avg. Velocity: 2590 fps

Does not like Reloader 10X, Varget, H4895 (just like Zack said )

I'm not sure, Randall will have to chime in here.

Varget and H4895 were thrown in just for fun.  I knew that they were too slow burning for this aplication but I wanted to see.  Accurcay with the Varget was fairly good but the velocity for a full case was somewhere around 2250 fps, way too slow.  H322 seems to be the powder of choice for the 6.8 application.

On a burn chart H4198, V N120, and Reloader 7 are right there with H322.  These might be worth trying if someone has them laying around.  Me, I'm very happy with the results that H322 is giving me, so I think I'll stay with it.  I feel very confident in being able to achieve 2650-2700 fps and sub moa with this barrel now.

day at the range. no problems with feeding this time, I think the last were just due to my ignorance of the type of a weapon on a rest. The mags was probably bumping into the sandbag during recoil on the FTF's last time. I was happy with the results considering that I am only a fair shot. the set-up was: 16" mid length CMMG chrome moly barrel, EO-Tech, GSE lower with standard trigger and 9mm buffer. the real tight group was at 33 yards for close zero and the other two were at 100 yards. the better of the 100 yard one is due to turning down the intensity of the dot on the EOtech helping me to see the target better. the flyer is my fault, I pulled. the load is:

Rem brass
CCI primers
H322 @ 27.6g
Hornady 115 OTM seated to crimp groove
avg about 2470 fps I think ... used chrony on the trip before this one.
targets from left to right are 100 yards (5 shot), 33 yards(5shot), 100 yards (4 shot) low power dot
ETA: the targets are 5.5 inch caldwell orange peel
