I’m not sure any of the big bore rounds have a huge following. I remember 450 Bushmaster had a pretty big following and the. Seemed to dry up. 458 Socom is certainly a favorite here. To me the Beowulf kind of stays at the same level. With all the knockoffs in 12.7x42 it’s maybe a bit of an uptick. If he wants it shoot it. |

I'd give 450 BM the nod in terms of popularity. It's a straight wall and popular for hunting in straight wall only states. It has more velocity and power than the 50 or the 458. With that said, the 50 and 458 are no slouches. Since all three are "potato lobbers" it kinda comes down to how far you want to lob it and if ammo availability is a thing for you. 450 is fairly ubiguitous and easier to find ammo for if you don't reload. 450 (2200-ish FPS, depending on bullet weight) stays supersonic out past 300 yards and is the fastest and most powerful of the three. 458 (1900-ish FPS, depending bullet weight) so more middle of the road, but is popular for heavy suppressed rounds. 50 will move out close to same speed as 458 with its lighter bullets, and can handle 700 grainers subsonic, but 50 cal suppressors are limited, big and expensive. The big fat bullets suffer in the BC department, so for deer, figure around 150 yards. My opinion is that the 50 Beowulf is kinda like the 500 S&W mag, you get it because you just want the fattest thumper out there. Again, it's no slouch and can be used effectively within its limits. I'd just rather have the 460 S&W mag. More versatile, longer range, etc. If I were picking one of the three rifle carts, it'd be a toss up between the 458 and the 450. |
| What brand is the AR? The Beowulf is a finicky AR unless made by Alexander arms. If your was put together from spare parts, most folks won’t touch it unless it’s super cheap. As mentioned above, get ammo and shoot it before deciding. I hear the recoil is a bitch. Good luck. |

Recoil is like a 12-ga buckshot or slug- not quite painful or punishing but you know you shot it. If you're one of those types that do nose to charging handle, you'll instantly regret it. I've killed probably 25 hogs with mine and they just go oink and die- only 1 ran and that was because of where I hit it. Factory ammo ain't cheap, but it ain't scarce either. Midway and Ammo to Go have it in stock, for a couple places. |
