New to the forum. Has anyone out there built a .17 HMR caliber in the AR 15 platform? I have decided to give it a try but find that others who have done it and have learned through experience are great folks to get advice. I bought the upper from Bear Creek with the 20" barrel and got the lower from Franklin Armory with their binary trigger installed. I've added their binary trigger to my .223 and it works great. I put an FRT in my other .223. I have an H3 buffer to add to the .17 HMR build to help with the trigger and I have a Bannish 22 that I use on my Ruger PRS .17 HMR and Volquartsen Black Mamba .22 pistol that will be used on this gun as well. I like taking the Ruger .17 out to hunt, but being bolt action the follow up shots just aren't there. I really enjoy the AR form factor and having the .17 HMR in semi auto (with a little extra) is what I'm looking for in a hunting rig. I use the .223s for going after feral hog sounders and they work great for the task! If anyone has done this please let me know if you've had obstacles or problems getting your gun to work as you would like. |

Back to the 17 upper, it initially had a lot of trouble extracting empty shells. I polished the chamber and it worked a little better, but the extractor was still slipping off the rim pretty consistently, so I sent the upper back to Bear Creek, and they fixed it free of charge, and covered shipping both ways. I don't know what they did to it, there were no armorer's notes, but the upper runs now. I would not use a standard H3 buffer with the 17, I would use their long buffer to prevent the charging handle from bashing the rear of the ejection port.  " />
