HI Folks,

Never been an AK guy, had a Bulgarian milled waaay back, thinking about maybe one in 5.56.
What is a good one to get?

Thanks!

If you can find one and have that kind of money I'd say this too.

For the ones available now I'd say
$1.5-2k budget
Sam5(might need to put a buffer or adjustable gas block if that is still an issue)
Polish beryl (great gun but proprietary furniture)

1000-1200 budget
Zastava m90(yugo pattern furniture)

700 budget
I like my PSA 101 but I only have a couple thousand rounds so far

I've been pretty happy with my PSA Krink in 5.56. I have fed it a steady diet of Tula that I had hanging around and not one issue. I'm just shy of 3k through it.

Holy shit!!

Been out of the ak game for a bit.

Bought my slr106f new back in about 07-08 for $700, got a bunch of circle 10 mags for it at $25/ea.

Looked up prices because of your comment and Jesus they are up there in price.

Why?

If you’re buying something to shoot, I like PSA

PSA learned from the mistakes of several other American manufacturers : eg. cold hammer forged  trunnions and barrels etc.

PSA makes tons of different flavors. Including some that have FN barrels, and some very interesting copies of Combloc stuff.

As far as collectibility: Chinese AK’s,  Valmet, Russian and others are pretty valuable these days.

Arsenal BG has long since discontinued all their stamped receiver guns unfortunately, so they have all turned into collector-priced stuff now.    They seem to focus on overpriced boutique milled receiver guns at low production volume.  Essentially dead to me.

Personally I can recommend the Zastava M90 and Polish Beryl as good options but the Beryl is about to be a collector gun too.  The M90 sits at a sweet spot in pricing and comes from the original Serbian factory.

The PSA 101-series is good for the price.  They essentially went back and cloned the SLR-106 family.  Pretty mature at this point now too.

Another option is the WBP Jack series of rifles from Poland.  Availability has been off and on lately so you’ll need to check Atlantic Firearms or Arms of America (their official importer) for specific models.  WBP seems to be picking the Polish AK market as FB Radom is moving off to their more modern systems like the Grot.  Very high quality parts go into their builds.

I've never been able to understand the desire for a 223/556 AK. If you want something in that caliber, get an AR type of rifle. If you want an AK, get a "true" AK caliber. Full stop......

That said, if you actually want an AK in a western caliber (for whatever idiotic reason) get an Arsenal. They will NEVER let you down. The closest thing to an actual AK you can get without spending the price of a decent car....

Yes, they've gone full retard on pricing lately. But...so has the entire rest of the AK "world".....

There is NO semi-auto "AK" in the entire world worth $1,500+

I love 556 AKs. It's the only way I could afford to shoot an ak74.

An AR is better and cheaper but an AK is funner and x39 is getting ridiculous for cheap crap ammo.

That’s certainly one opinion.

I bought my first 5.56 AK in 2007 - I always had a fear that ammo importation would get messed up and cut off the cheap Russian steel.  I love the AK-74 so being able to essentially keep shooting the type even during times of foreign ammo scarcity thanks domestic production was just smart.

Also, to many/most AK enthusiasts, being able to shoot ANY AK is just fun.  My preferred round will always be 5.45 but I’ll take going with a 5.56 over not doing it at all.  I know there’s a lot of the community that only exists in this narrow AR15/Glock 19 all-the-things mindset but a lot of us just want to have fun.  Sure, a Geissele Super Duty is a faster/better platform if you’re min-maxing speed and features but who really cares?  I want to have fun.

I’ll also challenge your assertion to just get Arsenal.  No.  The SAM-5 is absolutely not worth the price compared to the other options on the market if you’re not specifically wanting a milled Bulgarian receiver.  I dare say Arsenal hates their customers more than HK ever did, their US customer service and QC have gone to shit since a lot of the good people left and they refocused into the wanna-be custom shop mess they are now.  I used to be an Arsenal fanboi; I have four, two of which are SBRs, but they lost the plot a long time ago.  Some of this can be blamed on their US partner, they’ve had that exclusivity for far too long and have crappy business practices.  I guess K-var ships a little faster than before but that’s about it.  The other side is the Bulgarian factory just doesn’t care about the US market anymore and would prefer to focus on military sales.

This is all compared to Zastava USA, who is actively bringing as many variants of the mothership to the US as they can.  Century absolutely screwed them over, so I’m happy that they could setup a new US front to give them what they deserve.  I used to be really “meh” on the Yugo variant but after getting my feet wet with my old SKS and their M70 ZPAP, I became a believer and jumped on board.  They’re overbuilt and heavy, but they are a gun that will last a lifetime and then some.  They actively run sales on parts and accessories, they look for new products to import, they’ve stepped into the AK suppressor market, and now they’ve taken on rebuilding AB2 kits to have another product.

You can look at WBP as well as they seem to be highly customer focused as well.  TFB posted up a pretty cool video with James R talking to their rep and they really really know their stuff.  They want to increase their Euro and US market presence and are actively listening to customers and bringing new models and features to fill in that space.  It’s really refreshing after the mess where US importers filter back useless information so we get crap like Century does with Cugir in Romania now.  “No one wants a 5.45 rifle!”  Yet when Atlantic posts new 5.45 guns of any kind, they sell out in a couple days.  Cugir could dump out Md.86 and their RPK and own that market (especially since they still make for the Romanian military) but Century is protecting their own shitty US-made line from it.  Cugir desperately needs to have their own Cugir USA like Zastava.

Anyway, I’m not trying to dog you, but that was a hot take that flies in the face of the entire US AK market for the last four years.

Because they offer a lot of the advantages of the AK-74 in a cartridge that is readily available with a wide variety of loads.

Some of us just like the feel and experience of shooting an AK, don't accept that every single 5.56 semi rifle has to be an AR, and this is now the cheapest way to do it. AKs are just fun to shoot.. Usually I enjoy shooting them more than ARs - rock and lock mags are just fun to use, and the ka-chunk of the AK action is a positive feel, just no way around it. The mags are now cheap and easy to find, from PSA, AC Unity, etc.

5.56 AKs accuracy wise are on par with just about any non free-floated M4 type rifle. They aren't dirt clod shooters, and can hold their own at any distance your typical AR can.

As far as being a "real" AK there are numerous 5.56 AK variants accepted into military use. It's not like it's something oddball like an AK in .270 Win, and the 5.56 case is so dimensionally close to 5.45x39 (and almost the same overall length as 7.62x39) that very few changes were required in the design to adapt to it.

Many of us even built out 5.45 parts kits into 5.56 rifles with no changes other than a different barrel with a slightly smaller gas port, and appropriate magazines - hell you can even get away with using 5.45x39 magazines to a limited extent.

The Arsenal rifles had their issues as well. The first generation of SLR-106 and their magazines had some feeding issues. Arsenal more or less later admitted they had used the US civilian market as a test bed for their 5.56 production rifles. If you're looking at a used SLR-106 you want a post-BD serial prefix, which iirc hadn't been produced since the late 2000s but used ones are probably still floating around.

For the OP.. If you just want a taste, buy a PSA 101 rifle, then decide if you want another after that, you can upgrade to a Beryl or something more high end.

On the current market, the Polish Beryl, M90, and arguably the Galil ACE are the only 5.56 AKs available that are in actual military use.

The PSA 101 is pretty close to an AK-101 appearance wise, but by the small details it's closer to being a straight pre-100 series AK-74, just chambered in 5.56.

No reason not to own one for anyone who likes a variety in fun and functional rifles to shoot.

Guess those former Warsaw Pact countries that joined NATO but fielded 5.56 AK’s were not in a “true” AK caliber….

Anyhow- a 5.56 AK means you can keep shooting an AK when 5.45 and 7.62 x 39 ammo supply is interrupted or price has jumped.  Because shooting one gun variant all the time gets kind of boring.  (Assuming you actually shoot a fair amount like I do).

Clint Smith used to bust out his 5.56 Chinese AK during rifle instructor classes, he thought there was some value to it.

I have used some of my AK’s for familiarization training for swat folks at times, and using the .223 rifles would have made things simpler for ammo as I could have just used agency supplied practice ammo.

So you don’t have to buy one if you don’t want to.  But I also have a number of AK’s that I certainly would not sell for only $1500, so you are wrong there as well…at least according to the actual market price.

As already mentioned- an SLR-106 is a great choice if you can find one.

I had forgotten that WBP was doing straight AK-74 style 5.56 rifles now. Good option for the OP.

The early WBP 5.56 rifles were sort of an odd mish mash of AKM and Beryl style parts.

My Saiga .223 was also comically overgassed from the factory. As a result it had as much felt recoil as a 7.62x39 AK. I ended up just throwing a Wolff XP spring in it, but the KNS wasn't an option at the time.

My 556 Saiga is also quite over gassed even after pulling 4" off the barrel. Its been a great 556 rifle though. Very accurate.

I'd also throw in the Galil rifles. I need to figure out an optic mount for mine.

Seriously, if you want a 5.56 AK, get a Galil ACE that uses AR magazines. You will be happier. Add a KNS piston if you wish to suppress. You can also try to find a 13" gen 1 Galil ACE that uses the old style "rock n'lock" magazines.

The Zastava M90 is too heavy for what it is and uses its own proprietary mags along with softer Zastava steel components.

I have an Arsenal SAM-5, but I sent it to Rifle Dynamics to pimp it up. It is a heck of a shooter after the modifications, but for $2500-3000 I put into it, I could have better spent the money elsewhere (like a Galil ACE).

Stay away from WBP, PSA, Pioneer, etc. If you want genuine eastern block, Arsenal is really your only choice despite its milled receiver. Polish Beryls are still around, but IMHO, they are not as good as the Arsenals in terms of accuracy.

If money is no object, find a Sig 551. It's the damn reason I sold a Saiga I found at a gunshow I was going to turn into a genuine AK-101. Puts all other AK variants to shame despite it's stupid rubber dust cover.

and I'm going to also add, you should have at least one stamped AKM in your collection. AKM = original Warsaw pact AK in 7.62x39, 1 mm thick stamped receiver. Think of that scene from Heartbreak Ridge when Clint Eastwood ambushes his own company and teaches them what it's like to be shot by an AK. If you look around, you can find an old 1970s-80s AKM parts kit from Poland. A Romanian WASR-10 is another good buy. Zastava uses a 1.5 mm receiver and a heavier trunion for rifle grenades. I would steer you towards a Polish parts kit or Romanian WASR-10. If you have plenty of dough, there are Russian kits for sale.

PSA largely has the production down; sure, they ship some lemons but they’ll take care of it.  Big advantages to them are the warranty and domestic parts - fixing a broken gun is just a phone call or website order away.  Some of the other options are slightly harder in that regard.

Not sure why they would run expensive as hell Hollywood style blanks vs the cheap and readily available military 5.56 blanks.  Running military style 5.45 blanks in a ‘74 is loud as hell compared to an airsoft gun, as are plastic 7.62x51 blanks in a .308 (though brass cased military 7.62x51 blanks are indeed somewhat louder).

It makes a difference when doing a 3 day event where you might fire off 300-600 blanks.  And that is just semi auto…some folks bring full auto and burn thru even more….

Even at 1/4 mile plus, there is no doubt when someone starts up with a blank fire weapon at those events.  There is a reason folks want as many blank firing weapons on their side as they can get when playing.  I do imagine that PSA 5.56 rifles might be a good way to do it, not sure if any 5.45 or 7,62x39 blanks are even coming into the US now due to sanctions on Russia…. And if you beat the hell out of a PSA, who cares?  (Unlike the valuable ‘74 I used).  It is actually a pretty good use case for a PSA in 5.56.

Most of the recent complaints I’ve seen about them are their barrels, which obviously you’d never notice with blanks.

Yep, Norinco 84S or BWK-92 is my choice.

The "expensive/rare magazine" issue is easily overcome with the cheap and plentiful Pioneer 5.56 mags, which have worked great in all my Norincos and Zastava M85, too.

Many thanks to all who posted, wow that was an interesting dive.

Came up with either the WBP Jack or the Zastava M90 are the two most likely
possibilities, though if I had the scratch, the Arsenal SAM5 94 is so super cool. It just looks the
business.

I had an Arsenal milled receiver AK back in the 90's with the thumbhole stock, and a Romanian(?) AK74
type rifle too, makes me wonder if I should have held on to them, they were super cheap in the $600
range iirc.

**UPDATE: discovered the Radom Beryl army loadout rifle, THAT is what I'd love to get, but wow, they are not cheap!!

yes it will fit on the WBP. There is a company that makes Romanian style dong handguards for the zastava though but what you have won't fit.
The zastava might be heavier and not take akm furniture but between that and the wbp I'd get the zastava. Chrome lined barrel compared to the nitride is a big deal on an AK where you can't easily change the barrel and the wbp is supposed to suffer from some of the same problems the PSA 101 does with the firing pin. All though my 101 from PSA has been great.

Yeah and it seems like it will be priced in the range of the other higher end 556 AKs like the Beryl and sam5. I was hoping for a little cheaper but if they are really good rifles I can swallow 1800ish bucks I guess.

The Zastava belongs to my buddy. He bought it 30 minutes before I made that video. I'm definitely going to get a 5.56 AK now, and thanks for the info on the WBP-AKM compatibility.

I'm planning on picking up a WBP Jack without furniture from Atlantic now.

Did WBP ever resolve the accuracy issues? A lot of the early 5.56 Jack reviews were showing pretty poor accuracy, almost like the bore sizing or twist rate was wrong.

This guy is painful to listen to.

Did he or his buddy even check anything on the gun?

I got my hands on one as well, and it has been reliable and fun to shoot. I went as far as getting some original plum bakelite mags and a couple East German Orange Bakelites and replaced the stock followers with one from Pod Arms; flawless feeding.

I also got my hands on an ATI Galeo pistol (Galil SAR clone). Another fun gun to shoot, Waitign on January 1st to drop paper to SBR it.

Apparently it was so hard that you didn't even listen lol!!!!.  It explodes and then you ask if he and his buddy even checked anything after doing what many on here say to do "Send it back to PSA they will fix it" while completely ignoring that he sent it back to PSA a FEW TIMES LOL!

This one might be a little painful for you too

Let's hope for the best. Please stay away from PSA and WBP for now. At first, I thought positive things about the latest WBP 7.62x39 AKMs, but issues have popped up unfortunately.

@mancat this poster hates PSA and trolls anything to do with PSA in this forum.

This is his SOP in this forum.

To KSD_Dave, you don't get to berate other posters in a technical forum, so you are done in this thread.

First of all, that’s my video. Secondly, it’s not PSA hate. My friend almost
Lost a finger to the PSA 102.

If you own one of these rifles, I highly urge you to check your locking lugs every couple hundred rounds. The small stem bolt they use is not compatible with the AKM size trunnion they also use in their small caliber AKs. Your bolt is 100% only locking on the far edges of the trunnion lugs. Couple this with incorrect angles on the trunnion lugs themselves and it’s only a matter of time before the gun has a catastrophic failure. They don’t build the small caliber guns correctly. That’s irrefutable at this point. As that user stated, this rifle is now on its FOURTH RMA.

Like I state in my video, I want PSA to be successful with their AKs, the market needs it. But it’s gotta be done right. Having guns that are purposely built with incorrect parts is not good. You are better served spending your money on a different brand of 5.56 AK. I would avoid the PSA 5.56 kalash all together. It’s not worth the risk.

What should I look for when checking the lugs? Cracks and deformation obviously but is there something else I should look for?

My 101 is supposed to be my beater I don't have to worry about. I have a beryl I plan on shooting a lot but I don't want to just toss it in the back of truck or side by side when I'm out on a farm or whatever. I don't baby stuff and the beryl can definitely take it but these AK imports aren't coming back one day. Whatever I guess it adds character.

I know I can fix or replace my PSA cheap and it runs great but I don't want to get hurt

Pay attention to the right lug looking down at the trunnion, if it’s beginning to peen over, that’s a problem. This is the problem lug with their trunnion, since it’s milled at an incorrect angle. Also watch your bolt lugs, a good way to immediately see the problem with these rifles is to put a round on the bolt and (without the carrier) feed the round in and lock bolt into the trunnion.

Observe how much unsupported case you have and the wiggle in the bolt when it’s in its locked position.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on it. I thought I might be the only person that got a solid 556 AK from PSA. I do want other 556 AKs like basically all of them

So I guess you are not getting in the 556 AK game without spending at least $1200 if these PSA guns are junk. I plan on shooting mine a lot but it will be years before I can come back here and give a real review.

The M90 is the cheapest of the best it seems of whats available.  FB is supposed to send a few more Beryl AKs this summer but I already see the prices going over 2-2.5k plus they are allowed to bring in the GROT rifles and AoA will be selling them in the near future but not an AK. It will go nice with my Beryl though.

I guess it's
M90
Sam5
Beryl
Galil Ace
And possibly the Meridian Defense 101, for 556 AKs that are still readily available.

It is worth noting, the PSA krink has its lug geometry addressed. The source for this is Zack Shaeffer. One of the most prominent builders right now. There are more than a few people that have taken PSA krinks to very high round counts.

I’m no PSA hater, I NEED them to be successful. They just need to do it the right way.

The meridian rifles are going to be absolute home runs. No doubts.
