Anyone know the backstory? I’ve appreciated the Serbian contributions to the AK market. |
From a high-level, Serbia has a mostly non-adversarial relationship with Russia. However, they have an even better relationship with making money.  They have approved exports of munitions to various EU nations that have turned around and provided it to Ukraine in their fight against the Russians. They have not been selling direct though, as far as I know.Russia’s foreign minister made a stink about finding Serbian supplies in Ukrainian hands to the right parties in Serbian government, which caused Serbia to pause all exports until they “review” everything. I suspect they will eventually resume but there’s no guarantees with anything in global geopolitics. So while they may have decent relations, they are not selling direct to Ukraine and the Russians sure as hell aren’t buying from them. Arms exports are a pretty big industry for them, so they can’t afford to indefinitely shut down everything. Serbia probably won’t want to step in the shit of pissing off all their neighbors by trying to have Russia become their new customer either. Russia could probably consume the small arms ammo and bigger munitions, but they don’t have the commercial arms market like the US and the Yugo standard isn’t compatible with the domestic Russian military design. My fool’s take is they will probably pause exports for a while to placate the Russians and then resume with perhaps some different end-use rules for the EU customers. Or they’ll start producing unmarked/sanitized munitions for the Ukrainian market and go with the “don’t get caught” plan for the future.
