Looking for recommendations on a shop that can replace the barrel on a Romanian PSL-54R. Looking for specializes in AKs and knows their way around this gun. I am assuming that there are replacement barrels out there. Correct me if I am wrong. I picked this gun up locally and it looks like someone fired corrosive ammo through it without cleaning it afterwards and it has not been touched since. If it matters, I am in West TN. If the barrel cannot be replaced, what is the best way to attempt a good cleaning and remove the rust to inspect for damage without damaging the gun more? |

| It can definitely be replaced. AK-Builder sells replacement barrels. There's a lot of AK-specific shops that can do it (M13 Ind, Two Rivers Arms, Iron Curtain Customs, etc). I would only look at smiths that have a lot of AK build experience. |

I would try and clean as normal and shoot it. You might be surprised at the accuracy you get. But if a regular cleaning doesn’t help, try this. Plug the barrel with a foam earplug. Stand on end and fill with Kroil or PB Blaster. Leave it for 24 hours then run a old or undersized cleaning brush wrapped in Big45 Frontier metal cleaner. The above process turned a sewer bore Mosin into a mirror bore that shot great. |

Definitely give it a good cleaning and shoot it. I had a SKS that I bought really cheap that had a sewer bore with pitting (inside and out) to match. It actually shot really well. I didn't notice any difference from my brand new SKS. The sewer gun may have shot a tad better. I never tried any good ammo to see what they were capable of. $75 rifle got .10 cent candy. I had a PSL that was an imported factory new gun. I wasn't impressed with the accuracy, even with the silver tip ammo that shot better through a PSL. In fact, my Saiga .308 shot so much better, I traded away the PSL. I wish I kept it because of how it tripled in price. But I really regret trading the Saiga, but love the guns I got for it. So don't expect much from the PSL. It may not be the bore that's the issue. |
