I recently bought a pile of leftover ammo and included were two Yugo mags full of 711 93 headstamped ammo. I've verified steel core hollow point, and the Internet says they're hardened steel cores. Is there any value to these? I know some of this old ammo is pretty good stuff, some of it should be thrown at rocks. |

To verify it has steel cores, you would have needed to pull the bullet and cut out the core, because some jackets are magnetic, especially on imported ammo. So I hope you didn’t just use a magnet test… To see of it is hardened, check it with a file. If the file bites easily, it likely is not hardened. I doubt it is hardened anyhow. The only steel cores HP ammo I recall was from that time frame, Russian made, and the boxes actually say something like “lead core bullet for hunting” or similar, (which is bunch of lies….). I don’t recall the headstamp, not gonna go dig some out, but I think it was around that time frame. Hollow point with steel cores is pretty dumb, but that is what they did, I have dissected some of it. But I don’t recall it being hardened. As for value- It will perform like FMJ, it certainly will not expand. Doubt it will punch thru much more than any other mild steel cores would, probably less due to the HP. Will update later if I remember to find some of the stuff I have. |

| OK, I see where you are seeing that particular ammo plant made some AP ammo that had that headstamp, but they also made FMJ with that headstamp. Everything made that year at that plant said 711 93…. So that is really no guarantee one way or another. Guy saying it had hardened cores says the box was labeled correctly- HP SC, unlike the stuff I have that was labeled as lead core but wasn’t. |

These are strongly magnetic, not like some that are lightly reactive. I'll pull a bullet and see how it files. |
