When I was in college, I only had two rifles - this WASR and an FAL. After a spree of targeted attacks on our home (spray painting antisemitic and other targeted graffiti based on my dad's physical disabilities, slashed tires, broken windows) I sent this rifle home to live with mom just in case. The rifle worked great but it was ugly as shit...I'd poorly stained the wood green, duct taped a pad onto the stock, poorly attached a sling...kid stuff.
Anyway, after that problem was solved, this rifle lived under mom's bed unperturbed for over 10 years. On one occasion, after taking up amateur picking as a hobby, I tried getting in unannounced to say hi to the family...to my surprise I saw this same rifle at the top of the stairs in front of a visibly rattled 60 year old suburban Jewish mom. Occasionally I'd take it to the range when visiting, fire off the rounds in the mag to ensure function, then clean it, reload it and return it to its home. She wouldn't shoot it much...occasionally I'd coax her to the range and she'd rap off a couple of magazines at a silhouette 10 yards away, say "good enough," and that was that. My interest in tacticool kind of died in the IDF. Started getting more into wood and steel on firearms, and after refinishing a couple of shotguns I realized that mom's AK could use a tune up. Decided to strip it, restain, and give it a full overhaul. Parts after sanding.  First coat of stain.  Mom's AK after applying the first coat of sealant.  After the first range trip. Sewed the rear sling attachment point on her mother's sewing machine.  WASRs may not be Russian or Chinese AKs in terms of fit and finish, but they work for their intended purpose (defending the...motherland) and I sleep better at night knowing that the old bird could Never Again some motherfuckers from the top of the stairs with a reliable, powerful, standard capacity weapon. |
