 FEG HD-18 SVD Dragunov Gas Tuning | Bubba's "Gunsmithing" This might cause some major migraines but what the hell.  Thoughts? I mean he bought another one to do the modification so I guess he isnt hurting it too badly value wise but I hear dremel and firearms and I get scared.

His solution is pretty sweet actually, and has really interesting implications for backpressure when using a suppressor I've discussed an adjustable regulator to reduce gas pressure with other long time SVD guys like Hilljack, TowerofPower and WolfmanReid and they had some great ideas, but what this guy did is super simple and really easy. I get hung up sometimes on things like this needing to be 'combat reliable' or SHTF / life depends on it dependable, but for most of us that level of reliablity is totally unnecessary. This guy figured out something really useful and he's right, spare pistons are relatively cheap. If you can afford a FEYG it won't be an issue to get a spare piston I'm going to give this a try myself. I think lowering recoil might help improve group size which is why I want to give it a shot OP, thanks for posting

That's an interesting mod. I'd think the benchmark would be using the weakest ammo you could find though to still endure reliable function. I always had the idea of modifying the original adjustable version to have more than two positions but never got around to trying it. |

Take a look at a Yugo M77/76/90 piston. The face of the piston is drilled about 1/2" into the stem, and then the stem is cross drilled. So you end up with a "T" channel in the piston. On the Yugo rifles this supposedly incurs a pulse delay in the gas system. I'm curious if this would work for this same application. It would require a drill press and an alignment fixture though at the very least. You could even drill and tap the hole in the piston face so that a threaded hex set screw could be installed. That way you could "turn off" the modification if needed. Probably over thinking it. Your quick and dirty mod did what it wa supposed to. |
