Hope you do later. I have been beating my head trying to decide which top cover I want and I now think that I will stick with old school irons. So I guess it will have to be the railed top cover for now. Order will be placed soon. Waiting on tax return to hit my bank account anyday now.

how hot should the SS get? mine was too hot to touch after 3 mags not really skin melting but hot enough. wasnt exactly slow fire or double tapping either, more like aimed shots about a second apart maybe slower. running a tangodown stubby and a Viking tactics offset/surefire on the one long rail
that came with the kit. not really digging the vfg but it's the only way I know of to run the rail w/o losing skin |

Gloves? rail covers? you will get heat through the holes . there are a ton of factors to look at. will they get hot if you shoot multiple mags fast ? yes , how hot ? again variables.

thanks but the whole deal with the SS for me was rails only where you need them. if I need to use rail covers then the regular handguard should have been the way to go.
i asked this in the industry forum but are accessories like covers for the SS bolt and hole pattern something you are considering? light mounts, hand stops, etc |

Well guys, I finally got a chance to put my new MI-AK-SS handguard together. I'm not really a traditionalist with the AK, so I thought this handguard would be an improvement over the original forearm. I've been wanting something longer than original, as I like a farther forward grip on the hanguard, like I've gotten used to with my ARs. I also liked the idea of bolt-on rail sections instead of the full rails. I guess anyone who likes this new product feels the same, so here's some pictures of my install. I apologize for the bad lighting, but this is the garage...
My rifle is of course a SLR-107F, and I ordered the handguard with the T1 optic specific top cover. 
A few things I wasn't able to know before I bought it was, how wide is it? and how much will it stick out beyond the side of the receiver? Here's some detail pics 
As expected, the handguard is compatible with my folder: 
And I love the built - in quick release attach points. Great idea for added value. It never made sense to bolt on a rail section, then attach a sling attachment device. Very KISS, like anything on the AK should be. My cleaning rod still fits, although it takes more wiggling than it used to. And obviously a bayonet will still work as normal. 
My final question had been: what kind of co-witness will I get with irons and my T1? The Ultimak this replaced gave a solid absolute co-witness. The MI seems more like a lower 1/3 co-witness, which is great for me. Still allows a tight cheek weld, but I can see the dot above the sights, which are still useable. I have a Krebs peep sight installed. 
I did not intend this to be a review. I just wanted to share some photos and observations I had, since there isn't a whole lot of info out there for this new product. I just received an IWC mount for my SF scout light, stay tuned for pics of this set-up. It looks like it's gonna be a great fit on this handguard. |

planning on putting Impact Weapons Components/Mount-N-Slot Dropwing light mount
EDIT: it mounts but you have to center the mount, all the way forward doesn't allow clearance with the top cover screws. Also, I used the "non-SS" backing plates, really glad it came with the two sets. 
still need to cut some TD rail covers and then countersink and drill through holes so I can bolt them directly to the sides. Noveske NST eat your heart out haha jk. It'll be ghetto but practical for me. I don't want to add rails just to put on rail covers. this way it would be less bulky as well |

That Drop Wing setup looks great!
This is what I ended up with for my scout light. I like how far roward and tight into the rifle it is. My only concern will be the gases exhausting from the gas tube right by the switch and where my thumb will be when activating the light. Don't think it'll be an issue with gloves. I'll be able to try it out this weekend. 
Here's a few shots of the old setup. Huge improvement, I'm very satisfied with the MI handguard.

These units will fit unconverted saigas. You will need to change the gas tube to a standard unit or remove the tin tack welded on the outside of the sporter version . Then you are good to go.

Just got a chance to install my long SS rail today. I didn't remove the whole heatshield from the stock Saiga gas tube, I just cut part of it off with a dremmel. I'm not using an upper with it though, not sure if that changes anything.
The AFG2 is just bolted on using the rail section screws. I need to find some slightly longer ones for the back and the rail covers I'm putting on. Overall I'm very happy with it so far. Without the upper it's barely heavier than the stock Saiga handguard and I'm sure it will be a lot cooler. The only thing I wish it had was a QD sling spot at the front of the rail. |

The heat helped warm my hands since it was about 15F that day. No slipping, sliding or rotating. 4) I was surprised to find that my T1 ended up with an absolute co-witness with the irons. Happy about that. Sighting in was easy and staight-forward. Definately prefer this optic mount to a side mount since I can still fold the stock. 5) The only draw back I can see with this setup is the obvious one: you can't remove the gas tube without removing the sight mount. I don't shoot corrosive ammo so it's not a real big deal to me - I try not to be anal and clean my AK too often. It looks best dirty anyway. |
