Earlier this year, I was asked to write an article on this topic: https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/what-to-look-for-in-a-modern-ak-47-44824840 My conclusion - it still makes sense to buy imported AKs, they hold value better. If we learned anything in the last 40 years, it is that imports tend to disappear. And once that happens, "cheap and available" guns like Saigas and Type 56s become valuable collector's pieces. |

Yes, as I started to post, I got some Déjà vu. Went back and saw why: I had already replied in October. Don’t really care myself if people post in zombie threads, despite what others appear to think. I just wanted to call attention to the fact that it was unlikely the OP was paying attention to the thread anymore. As it happens, apparently OP did check in. So I’ll actually add to my original suggestion a bit: If I could, I’d find a 5.56 AK or AK-style platform. That way you can still experience the fun of the AK with cheap(er) ammo. I’m currently waiting for Tortort to make more Galil receivers to build up a kit I’ve had for several years now, but outside of that I’d say check out a M90, or maybe a Galil Ace. But be prepared for them to be spendy. And yeah, they’re not classic AKs, not being x39. But the Russians mostly left the 7.62x39 behind for the 5.45x39, which is pretty close to the 5.56. So I wouldn’t feel it was too far from the real-deal. |

I've seen and shot newer stuff from PSA, Poland, and Yugoslavia - finishes are nicer, but the reliability has never changed. Attached File Good deals are still out there. Found this Zastava M90 in a local gun store in Anchorage in March, paid around $1150 for it, and then on a quick trip to Arizona found the M85 on a shelf in a gun shop in Sierra Vista for $1050. Both shoot great, and the M85 yeets brass about 60' away with the suppressor so the KNS piston is getting installed tonight lol - Clint |
