Granted, 600 yards is not 853.33 yards, but 7.62 is more capable than some people think. Travis Haley did a video where he was shooting a 300 BO SBR out to 800 yards and making hits. 300 BO is very similar to x39, ballistically. |

I mean it's possible but that's on a one way range, an experienced shooter, magnified optics, and quality ammo. Indian army?? Ehhhhh I dunno. We're talking guys who throw rocks back and forth with the Chinese over a cobblestone border wall. Soviet designs always factored in volley fire because it's something they were taught to do - for that matter it's something all armies used to do, but the Soviets held on to the idea for longer than anyone else for some reason. Same reason you can look at a Mosin and see absurdly long range markings on the leaf sight - like up to 1500 meters (or arshins on pre-Soviet models). No individual soldier would've been expected to be effective at that range, but put a squad or two of men together and tell them you're volley firing at this general area 800 meters out - yeah then you might have some effect. One of them will probably hit something. That's pretty much the same idea with anything marked beyond the "battle" setting on an AK leaf sight, which is intended to hit any man sized target within 300m. That's really the more realistic effective range of 7.62x39 before ballistic drop, wind, dew, temperature etc. start to drastically effect its trajectory and energy just drops straight off I'm more surprised that India didn't opt for the 5.56 version since they've been tooled up to produce it for the INSAS for quite some time. |

I was using a non-magnified red dot from the prone position on a makeshift roof. And it was timed. I was shooting Wolf 123 gr fmj shooting out of my Bulgarian SLR101S (precursor to the SAM 7). The target was a full-sized IDPA silhouette. I'm not disagreeing with you about individual soldiers doing it without practice, I'm stating it can be done under pressure if you practice. |

I am 100% confident that the decision to procure the AK 203 had nothing to do with military effectiveness, and everything to do with who was getting the kickbacks at every stage - the factory location, the ammo plants, the management, the workers, the generals and government officials over procurement - all of them had their hand out, and shithole countries like Russia know that they have to pay, and are happy to do it. This is why Russia has and had such shit equipment - eventually there isn't enough money left to actually produce what was specified, so corners get cut. And in Russia, it's only a crime if you get too greedy, make the "boss" look bad.

It’s probably the weirdest collection of equipment around the world outside of African or Afghani arms bazaars. They fly Su-30MKI fighters go with their French Rafales and Russia is trying to woo them with Su-57E fighters. ![]() I’m not sure I’d want to carry an AK-203 made in India. Venezuela maybe, CAVIM used to be good stuff so maybe their ghost will help them out. Vietnam’s licensed production of that Galil ACE is probably good too. |

I assume if Russia set them up with tooling, they're forging all of these parts. No way to know though. At least the factory looks clean. I don't think he meant that because of a availability but it is an odd choice for a modern military to choose x39. It's pretty available across the world in general but I would think 556 or even 545 would of made more sense. Maybe they like that bigger round with their last cartridge being 308 in the sig716. |

Waiting to hear how the future “worst AK ever” is coming along. I mean how long has it been since anyone adopted the 7.62 x 39 caliber anyhow? Russia and Russia leaning former Warsaw pact countries use 5.45 mainly at this point. Just a weird choice. India- same country where their .308 surplus ammo from 1975 is pretty dang good, and their surplus ammo from 1999 is flat out dangerous…. Yeah I am sure this project will go just great. (They had foreign help in the 70’s- various sources claim either Radway Green or Winchester helped them set up .308 ammo production back then). |
