Pics tell the story of what I have inherited recently. Uncle died and his one son is a felon and the other is non-functioning alcoholic, unfortunately, so they gave them to me. I know jack shit about AK's except where to point the dangerous end. I contracted in Afghanistan and my issued weapon from my company was a comblockl AK of some variety (....it looked like a krink but it wasn't a krink, though a contractor friend of mine did have a legit one over there). I don't have much AK knowledge and they aren't as popular as they were back in the '90s and the parts supply is not what it used to be......which can be said for many guns of our past. I know the MAK-90 and the Yugo M70 are decent. I also had an underfolder under my rack as a back up or loaner gun and I had an RPD with a drum. I actually used it in the fight at the well-known Supreme compound fight in late 2011 in Kandahar. The RPD was the bidness, but underfolder AK's, while they look bad-ass, actually suck donkey balls in real-life use. I do have the atrocious thumbhole stock abomination for the MAK, but my first thought was to use it to build an SBR clone of my primary rifle back in the day. Looks like the Mac is NHM-90. Imported with the under folder trunion that was blocked. Someone unblocked it. You could just put on that ugly thumb hole stock they came with. Or you can find an under folder to fit it. Plus cut the front weld and unthread the muzzle nut. You may even have the spring and detent in the hole in the fsb. Swap out the fire control parts with US parts. Add a Magpul pistol grip and a USA made muzzle device and AK47 PMag . I think. That is enough parts. But not a lawyer. |

. I've never considered myself and ak guy even though I carried one for a while, but I was thinking the same thoughts as you.

Doesn't mean they had to be experts. That's certainly an odd AK you got issued there. Looks like someone maybe took an AMD-65 and put some Krink parts on it? Hard to tell exactly what was done from the photo. Unfortunately you'll probably end up having to source the UF stock and hardware piece by piece. It's possible that the Romanian UF stock is also a candidate, as they are the same milled stock style as Chinese rifles, but I'm not sure that the lockup tang angles are the same. Would be nice if PSA sold some of the parts from their Spiker series separately - I've said that they could make some profit selling a Chinese rifle unban kit. |

I'm surprised the Yugo doesn't have the grenade launcher/gas shut off front end? I did remember some weird yugo's around 2014ish but I'm pretty ignorant on them. The Chinese might be a good candidate to send out to one of these builders and turn it to something cool unless you want to keep it original. Romanian might work for that. Are you planning on using them a bunch? |

ETA : @JamesJones do you have any suggestions on where to find a handgaurd for this? Avery one I have laying around is too short. |

Avery one I have laying around is too short. @Clan_McIntyre You need a yugo/Serbian pattern This page has some blem upper and lower handguards make sure you get the m70 and not the 90/85 parts. M70 handguards will fit that. Zastava USA definitely has them but places like apex might have surplus. If you want something more modern they make plenty of yugo/Serbian stuff now. |

Any underfolder will fit the tchina rifle. The original to it has a downward slope whereas the euro-pattern is straight rearward when deployed. Also, a blued finish is going to be tough to find, unless you get an unmolested Yugo. I might have a set of handguards for the Yugo. Hit me up and I’ll check when I get back home. |

Apex will be your first place for AK parts. @Clan_McIntyre Your “MAK” actually appears to be a 56S Norinco. Or at least it was originally, the fact that it has a thumbhole stock likely means it was caught in customs when the ‘89 ban hit, so they pulled the folder stock and did the thumbhole instead so it could finish the import process and be sold. I would put a chinese UF stock on it. There are a few around (my kid might have one actually). I would not put a Euro one on it unless you can’t find a chinese one. (I can ask my kid if he still has it and if he wants to sell it). Maybe post some better pics of the Norinco, and what other markings it has. In my opinion if it doesn’t have MAK-90 stamped on it somewhere and just the 56S model info, it is worth more most likely. |

I know people recommend the real Chinese stock but if a straight style Euro fits I'd go that route. My old yugo and my sam7uf where all I shot and never felt that uncomfortable to shoot and I finally understood why people don't like them after I shot a Romanian (basically same angle as china). That's if shootablity is more important than keeping it authentic. I just get a leather wrap and it's not bad. |

Seeing the prices they go for on auction, guess you will need to decide if authenticity is worth the extra cost vs a Euro stock, as those are very available and cheap by comparison. For just shooting I would go Euro- you can always keep an eye out for a correct one and swap it out in the future if you desire. |

Personally, I'd probably sell the Chinese to someone that wants to finish the project. Use the money to get a triangle folder Pistol from PSA, do the SBR, and find someone to finish your in-Country clone build. Especially since you said you don't like under-folders, why keep two. And I'm not an AK collector, but I'd assume an under-folder Chinese might be in demand to those that do collect. The Yugo looks like a DCI built Century Arms (I just picked one up). For the most part, these have pretty good reviews. Add a wood handguard set & original PG, and you're done. As mentioned, APEX has a ton of sets. From Trench Art ones to almost new. If price is a concern, Centerfire Systems offers like new unfinished HG and Yugo PG (yours is a US made Century copy) for $20. I rubbed on a few coats of Tung Oil on mine but decided to use some more battle worn HG from Apex. You'll need the top handguard retainer and rear lower HG metal if you don't have the original black HG that already have these pieces. AKOptions sells Yugo slings for $20. AK47 Yugo Upper & Lower Unfinished Wood Handguard with AK 47 Black Plastic Grip $19.99  Here's my DCI built Yugo. It came with this horrible dust cover. Just waiting on my new dust cover from Apex. This might be a good base for your clone build just based on what I can make out in your pic. All you would need to do is have the barrel chopped and threaded, reposition & install the front sight, find the rail, and correct muzzle device. Don't know if the gas port would have to be opened up or not? This is their GF5 rifle with better barrel/trigger, but they also have the cheaper GF3 rifles PSAK-47 GF5 Triangle Side Folding Rifle, Imitation "Bakelite"  |
